I am running an RTA and RDA goblin mini and mutation xs and they look pretty bad all black and gunked up. so far I'm running both I just rewicked the rda and dry fired it not too long ago it doesn't taste good of course I let it sit for a while maybe a week but with my goblin I just rewicked it an hour ago I'm getting a heavily burnt taste.

I've had this rta with it's current coils for about 3 weeks now. I'm going to pop it open and see if it was just my bad wicking or what but it was some seriously dry hits. I'm using rayon on both. the coils on the rda might be a little older I'm at the point where if I dry fire it still looks pretty bad looks all rusted out and flavor wise is okay.. but not what I know it is with fresh coils.

also I was wondering I am receiving my new RDA this Thursday possibly tomorrow afternoon and was wondering if it is worth changing my coils? I will rewick my rta and dry fire them but once that rda comes it it's coming right off

when reading your post its as if you say you are rewicking and then dry firing your coils ?

if this is the case then you will burn or singe the wick and thats gonna give a burnt taste

when you dry burn a coil to clean it . its done without a wick to burn the gunk off the coil .the best method to dry burn a coil is to get the coil hot then quench it under a slow dripping tap a couple of times and the coil should clean up like almost new and shiney without the black gunk .

then once clean you then rewick it and fill tank or atty and vape again

kanthal is ok to dry burn other coil wires need caution as to the amount of heat used

do a search on youtube as to dry burning ie coil cleaning

hope this helps

Burnt hits are the result of over powering the coil or an unsaturated wick.
So, check your mod's power settings
Verify that your coil is heating from the center toward each end.
Verify that the legs of the coil are not glowing red (hot leg).
Verify that your wick is in juice
Verify that your RTA juice channels are not blocked by the wick.
Good luck

I meant I dry fire without anything in the coils and yes they are kanthal and get red hot. they turn a dark orangish color when not fired after dry burning sometimes. I found ouot why I was getting that super dry hit. one of my coil legs were not screwed down I guess pulling the wick out of it undid that and so only one coil was getting super hot

I started cleaning my coils like Rip does in this vid. The longest I've gotten one of my coils to last is 3 weeks. I generally clean and rewick them every couple of days.

yea I don't use water might be why my coils still looking brownish/burnt after dry firing. might try that next time

I don't like doing it, scares me every time, but it does get them clean.
Just Be Careful!
Do not press the fire button while it's under running water.
Only use a device that is battery powered. I don't know why, several videos have said the same thing
I use a mech mod. I just take whatever rda/rta I'm using and put on a mech mod.
Just follow what Rip does in the vid.

Good luck!

I use kanthal and Rayon also. I re-wick about every 3 - 4 days, and dry burn the coils before each re-wicking.

I get about 3 - 4 months use out of my coils. Heck, one pair lasted 8 months.

Be aware that loose post screws can cause the resistance to drop as much as 0.5 ohms (personal experience). So if your coil resistance is 0.5 ohm, a loose screw can give you a 0.0 ohm resistance --- which is literally a dead short and cause your battery to go into thermal runaway.

Rayon is a little tricky to work with. If you are having issues with it you might want to try Kohgendo cotton pads, they are really easy to work with. This varies from person to person though.

Just a word of caution, if you are repeatably getting dry hits you might want to reevaluate the situation to find out what the problem is. I'm sure that inhaling burnt cotton is not healthy for you.

You might want to stick to perfecting the RDA before you tackle the RTA. RDAs are much easier to work with. I'm just saying because you posted a few threads before about the issue.

I fail to see how a loose screw could cause resistance to go down; a loose screw normally means less contact and therefore the resistance should go UP. Did you have a length of wire sticking out from the post and shorting somewhere on you coil by any chance??
