AZHIGHWAYZ, your question is a good one and it's been answered well by others. Another consideration is the way that some Lithium batteries fail. They develop little pathways in the electrolyte called Dendrites. When these little paths that extend from the positive terminal reach the negative terminal (the battery casing) a catastrophic failure occurs just like it would if you shorted the battery.

It's a scary thought because we can't see them. New battery technologies are being developed to prevent Dendrites from forming.
