I don't want to derail the thread, but I thought the vaccine was required by law for preschoolers in most if not all states.

That was my thought too, that the DTP vaccine is required by law -- but there are all these lame-brains nowadays with conspiracy theories about vaccines -- who knows but the parents with kids in that school are among those idiots, defying the law just to be "modern". They probably eat kale too. :D

1. The origin was a teacher at the facility. Which might be why the 2 kids that actually caught it did not get very sick. Neither the teachers nor the administration thought of even inquiring about it. Before the outbreaks started, I think the standard tetanus shot for adults was just DT for years. Now it's the Tdap for adults who work with kids, and DTaP for kids. Capital letters mean higher (first-time) doses.

My daughter and I shared an OB/GYN so she gave me the Tdap when my kid was 6 months along.

2. Most states also allow a "conscience exemption" for school requirements. Originally, this was a religious exemption and I kinda wish it had stayed that way. But, oh, well.

3. Yes, they eat Kale (most were from Marin County) but so do I.

The 'conscience exemption' has become a religion for some :) It's in the same area.....

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would have a conscience objection to a life-saving vaccine; it's pure, unadulterated, unvarnished insanity. I guess they were distraught when smallpox was declared extinct, no more opportunity to skip that one and maybe bleed-out from every pore.

From what I've been able to figure, they've jumped on the anti-Big Pharma bandwagon. Easy to get new recruits who know nothing of science but think they do.

I can certainly understand and sympathize with anti-BP sentiments. But vaccines were around a long time before Big Pharma was Big -- like, 18th century -- and vaccines are the only defense against lethal virii, like smallpox and all the others that once killed thousands, millions. Vaccines are one of the very few actual triumphs of modern medicine. No one with one ounce of sense would refuse them, for themselves and especially not for their beloved children.

Hence the "new recruits who know nothing of science but think they do." :)

This is not the place for this conversation. There are a lot of us out there that do not vaccinate. I will not go into it here.
