I've only recently come to the vaping world, so please bear that in mind as you read my comments.
My first hurdle wasn't flavor, it was nicotine strength. I went too low initally at 12mg/ml. I was definitely missing not the cigarette tobacco flavor, but the nicotine dosage. I have since come up to 18mg/ml.
With that solved, taste was next..and is still a big part of my equation. For instance, Brand X and Brand Y claim the same flavor, but taste differently to me. This, from what I am reading, is most likely attributable to their base liquids coming from different bulk supply houses. Some vapers may love Brand X's vanilla, others Brand Y's. I go with what I like.
Next on my list is flavor. I am gravitating toward tobacco+other flavor blends and chocolate blends - I guess you could call those "dark" flavors. Perhaps it's from the years spent smoking analogs. I suspect, though, that as my tastebuds recover, I'll appreciate "lighter" flavors again. Time will tell.
Finally, I am learning the joys of variable voltage/wattage mods. I was trying out a new juice this morning, and at 3.7v "it just wasn't there". I worked up the voltage scale a tenth at a time and found different flavor notes along the way. At 4.5v this particular juice combined all the single notes ideally. And every juice's ideal vape point varies.
In closing, the whole darned experience is an exploration. You're not the first to travel this path, and you won't be the last. Trust your instincts and enjoy the journey.
..and wow did I go all philosophical or what?
