So more power, battery life, durability, and voltage regulation? Anything else I should consider?
I feel like with the PT3 there's really nowhere else to go with my current setup. The dual coil is a nice improvement because I can turn the battery up to 4.8 and almost never get dry hits. Still I just want something... more. I've tried a couple (I guess you would call them RDA's) and the flavor, vapor production etc. was 10x better than any tank I've tried. Much more satisfying indeed. I also like the idea of building my own coils, sounds like a lot of fun. Not completely satisfied with the generic kanger heads so being able to improve them is a big +
Of course I will do lots of research before buying anything. I just want to know what to consider while I'm doing my research. I see a lot of stuff on the interwebs about specific devices but no general info about mods/apvs. And if it won't blow up using an ego, would it still work better using a mod? Like I said, I'm trying to explore my options to get the best vape and this seems like the next logical step.
Sorry if I sounds ignorant or misguided, I just can't seem to find the information I'm looking for...
So basically the atomizer and coil within said atomizer you use makes the biggest difference in how the vape is going to be. But the mod you use does also make a noticeable difference. There are two main types of mods: regulated mods and unregulated mods. Your vision spinner, most ego's, and basically anything with variable voltage is a regulated mod. This usually means there is a little PCB chip inside the mod that regulates the voltage. This means that as your battery drains and its voltage output lowers, the mod will keep firing at the voltage you set it to until it can't. Most unregulated mods are mechanical mods, and they are very simple, it's just a positive and negative lead that make a circuit when you press the button. This means that the mod will fire at about 4.2-4.3v fresh off the charger, normally plateau around 3.7v for a while, and quickly taper off. There's nothing to stop you from over discharging a battery so you just have to notice the vape is getting weak.
Beyond that, different regulated mods use different methods of regulating voltage. Vision spinners, innokin's vv/vw mods, and the provari tend to give a smooth even vape, while other regulated mods like the VAMO and ZMAX use RMS which makes the vape kind of pop/crackle because it pulses high voltage.
The big advantage to unregulated mods, outside of vastly superior durability looks etc, is that the battery you're using is the only limit to how much power you can output. So if you get high discharge, low mah batteries you can push 30, 50, ??? watts while most regulated mods don't go over 15. Mechanicals give the best vape outside of very high-end regulated mods (dna 30, duke, etc) but you need to learn a good bit about battery safety and own a resistance checker before you own one. They're totally safe when used right, but your vape can be a potential pipe bomb if you're using cheap batteries that would otherwise be fine in a regulated mod because those mods have failsafes. Usually doesn't happen unless you get a hard short or make a very low res coil without checking it, but things can go wrong if someone just goes and buys a mech and rba without knowing anything about them.
tl;dr
regulated mods are more flexible with pre-made coils so they work well with clearos and cartos
regulated mods give the exact same vape until the battery dies, unregulated mods lose strength as the battery drains
not all regulated mods work the same, vape is subjectively very different between them
unregulated mods have no limits and work best with rebuildable atomizers
unregulated mods require more knowledge to use in general ex you will need to know battery safety, how to build a coil etc
you need a resistance checker to use unregulated mods, so it's never a bad idea to pick up a cheap VW mod to read ohms with if you want to get into them. The SVD, MVP v2, VAMO, etc are perfect for this because they can all be had for $25-40
