Too technical and detailed for this forum? I worked in the health care field for over 25 years. I have more information (and trivia) stored in this addled pate than many doctors but certainly not as much as a good pharmacist. I have enlightened more than one pharmacist regarding medication side effects and drug interactions because I fully research(ed) all medications taken by my patients, family and friends. I can't tell you how many docs and pharms were completely in the dark about the horrendous effects Chantix was having because they only read the package insert (during the early days).

Am I defensive? Maybe just a little. There are people here from all walks of life and the information available is absolutely mind boggling! I am in awe of the cumulative knowledge of this wonderful group of people who volunteer to help others. They do it out a desire to offer others what they have found: A safer way to quit smoking and a great hobby! I feel as though your comment was condescending and unnecessary. That is my inference. It may not have been your implication and I can offer the benefit of the doubt.

To answer one of your points that may not be readily apparent to some others reading this: yes, there are artificial sweeteners that become "unstable" at higher temperatures. For example, you can bake with Splenda by not Nutrasweet. The latter tastes bitter when heated but great in iced tea! None of them are proven healthy and there are numerous conflicting views regarding their safety. I have seen that sweeteners used in *many* eliquids were of the sucralose variety. This is more stable under heat. I assumed that was the reason it was used but I have never asked the question.

I am surprised that you could not obtain the answers you sought if you spoke with the companies directly. Every contact I have had with the manufacturers of eliquid has been quite satisfactory. Questions answered. If answers were unavailable, I received an email within a few days with a well researched, concise answer to my question.

Remember, the package inserts list EVERYTHING that happened during the drug trial, not just the results of an actual causal relationship with the compound in question. While informative, they are often the very reason a person will forego the medication they so desperately need. Can and may happen do not mean WILL.

If you are actually vaping for fun and pleasure, good luck with your journey! If you are taking a stroll down the trollpath, YOU GOT ME!

Yes. I was just explaining my background which is why my questions did not seem inappropriate to me. Not trolling. Genuinely seeking answers and I found those answers in several posts tonight. So that is all I wanted and I appreciate those answers that have been provided.

Might be your use of the appellation "Smoke juice" for starters.

It pays to take the time to read a couple dozen posts and learn the appropriate jargon before posting and setting someones teeth on edge right from the very beginning.

I am using a VEA and JC calls them smoke juices, hence the appellation.

with all of your technical background, could you not use your credentials when contacting the manufacturers to get to the bottom of the question at hand, i also would be very interested in fiding out what happens to certain flavourings etc, when heated, at what temp they go towards the dangerous side, if there is a safe temp to be inhaled and so on. you could be a very valuable asset to this forum and to vapers everywhere.

Well, I guess I assumed that some of those things were already well-known and that is why I joined this forum and posed those questions. I thought they were valid. And I knew specifically what I was concerned about. I was not implying that EVERYone should share my specific concerns. Nor was I judging any decision made by others. I was just asking specific questions.

Though I am NOT familiar with hardware, I do know about how things like temperature and PH affect stability and/or half-life, how products that are not toxic can degrade to toxic byproducts and metabolites and how very similar chemical entities can have very different toxicity profiles. I come from a world of MSDS. I have asked MANY questions of the manufacturers and have gotten some answers but they disclose just so much. I was broadening the quest. Actually, at this point, I am reading the responses to this thread since I initiated it and I appreciate all the many replies, but this will be my last visit to this forum.

After reading the label and info on HIGH Efficiency light bulbs. I now have the government approved "HAZ MAT" team dispose of them properly. Relatively expensive but im helping to save the planet.

I have also moved 3 times now because i actually broke 3 bulbs and i will not live in a house that a bulb has been broken in. You should have seen the look of the prospective buyers face when i disclosed that.

i know this is off topic but thought everyone should be fully aware of the dangers with using these things.

Haha- funny... a nurse I know broke a REALLY Old mercury thermometer he found (and was playing with) in a drawer and they DID call in HAZ MAT to clean it up- really...

my guess is this-people are defensive and "bristle" on this forum because people act that way off this forum. have you watched any tv or news lately? where does anyone "get along" any more? everything now is one debate after another with everyone taking offense and giving offense. the world out there is a divided place so why shouldn't this or any forum not reflect that reality? at least here it's semi-civil because text is always muted compared to yelling.

Not trying to sound defensive, attacking.. or anything other than helpful here.. ok??? If you are concerned about what is in your juice, and since you are vaping zero nic juice, why not go to the store and get a bottle of Kosher VG, thin some with a bit of distilled water, add a bit of candy flavoring from from some place like Michael's and there ya go.. Bob's your Uncle. You have made your own very simple juice and it has exactly 3 things in it. Flavoring, water, and VG. Then you need not worry yourself silly over sweeteners and artificial colors and the like.

Good suggestion- thank you.

Yes, we are a polarized people and find offense at every juncture.

Smoke juice is what Johnson Creek calls their juices....

Yes- and that is exactly what I am trying to determine. For instance, if the sweeteners are artificial- and someone else just posted that they are because sugar gunks the equipment- then I will just stop vaping. That is why I asked these questions. So now I got my answer so that is an easy decision- for me, at least.

They said "most", not "all" use artificial, there are vendors that advertise "all natural" ingredients. I'm sure if you asked in the e-liquid section of the forum, folks would be able to come up with a list of vendors for you to check out.

Actually, with your background and vaping 0 nic liquid, I would think it would be super simple for you to mix up your own e-liquid. There are suppliers of all-natural flavorings and then you could control what was in your liquid. Further, vaping un-flavored liquid is another option. I've seen a number of people post that they do so regularly.

Myself, I often vape an unflavored base with only a little plain menthol added.

It is well known what the harmful ingredients in a can of cola are-

Now I know it's a troll. With your approach, there is something "harmful" in everything. You know what, check all the permitted ingredients in drinking water. Did you know that most drinking water contains heavy metals, disinfectant byproducts, organic chemicals including pharmaceuticals and pesticides, and, wait for it, RADIONUCLIDES!!! Yes, that is a proven fact. OMG!!! I hope you combine your own pure hydrogen and oxygen to produce the water you use for your morning coffee because the plant that treats your water allows a laundry list of known harmful chemicals in their ingredients. And you are worried about nut allergies and artificial sweeteners?!?! Oh the humanity -- think of the children --- Lol.

I think there are a few juice companies that do list all the flavorings they use. Someone posted a list of ingredients that they were concerned about (because most juices just say 'flavorings') and I remember looking up each individual component listed and posting a short little description and a link to each one. I can't remember which company it was, but if you search my posts to find that thread, the OP might have mentioned which company. Now, that person was concerned because their juice contained what looked like many more chemically sounding ingredients than most juices do. That is not really the case though. Whatever company that was just broke down the flavorings into constituent ingredients and listed them. Looks scarier than "propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine, and flavorings", but all flavorings are scary sounding chemicals unless you are familiar with the conventions for naming chemicals (which I'm sure you are as a pharmacist of 35 years).

Interestingly, if I look at many products in my house (including soda) they also list a vague ingredient of "flavorings" or "natural flavorings". I'm sure that as a pharmacist, you know that nature can produce some pretty amazing compounds, which will have very 'chemically' sounding names when the chemists determine their structure and get around to naming them. I'm sure you also know that natural doesn't necessarily = safe. Our world is filled with things we can't name, can't absolutely quantify the safety of. Cigarettes are probably one of the most extensively studied products on the market (as far as what the ingredients are and what compounds they emit. We know they make some insanely harmful stuff, but we still don't know exactly what all that stuff is and what it all does. This is with decades of dedicated research. Ecigs have not been around nearly that long, and we are only beginning to study them in this sort of detail.

Do you know all the chemical names for all the flavorings in your soda, or your flavored cigarettes that you occasionally smoked? Do we even know the exact composition of your tap water (what trace chemicals are in it, and how many bbp)? Most of us don't. It is true that we don't really know for sure if many of these compounds in the flavorings of ecigs are 100% safe to inhale. We don't know a lot about the absolute safety of most of the stuff in the world that surrounds us.

If you don't really have to vape, I'd suggest not doing it. I can't imagine a scenario where inhaling something unnecessary would be better than not inhaling it. It's really a cost benefit analysis, which we have to perform here without exact knowledge. If you are an asthmatic, then inhaling a steroid solution (even if it might have inconvenient side effects) is preferable to suffocating. If you are a smoker, then inhaling flavors and a few chemicals is probably orders of magnitude better than inhaling the combustion products of burning plant material.

Btw, I have a phd in cellular and molecular biology, just letting you know my background here, since it seems to matter a lot.

YES- thank you- that is why I was asking because eating and inhaling are not at all the same. Someone did answer that since sugar gunks up the equipment, artificial sweeteners are used. I don't use artificial sweeteners even in food so I will probably just stop vaping. I was just vaping for the flavors (not nicotine) so it will be the route I go.

Sadly in this day and age there's not much stuff out there that is safe to ingest regardless of whether or not Govt agencies have approved the ingredients. I'm of the belief most important is moderation in anything we do. Myself and many others consider vaping to be a far safer alternative to smoking...my Dr, Surgeon and Dentist ALL strongly agree BUT at the same time would love to see the day when I am no longer vaping or smoking. It's just my personal opinion/ program that I just just happen to agree with them and am on track to be vape free by end of Summer.

Now I understand why the OP thinks this forum is defensive. That's not the word I would have chosen to describe it, but I see his/her point.

That would be pH, not PH. PH is commonly know as "Public Health" on this forum hence the underlined letters in your post. pH is the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ions in a solution and thus a measurement of acidity of a solution. pOH is the measure of the hydroxide ions and therefore the measurement of alkalinity. Just wanted to clarify this for those who might have been confused. :)sleep: I just bored myself.)

ConfusedNoobie: there are results of chemical tests done on "smoke juice" on the forum. I am sorry that I cannot link them for you. All the information and trivia stored in my brain does not include the link protocol or the exact place that I have read them. However, I can say I have googled and found the same information on the interwebs. Happy searching. I know you are no stranger to research and can find this information, be it on this forum on on the web.

Not yet- but if the plants have built-in insecticides that kill insects, including the pollinators...that is a real possibility. Cabbage is the next genetically engineered crop- with scorpion toxin in it.

Dang. I was so looking forward to my next pot of seasoned cabbage and scorpion stew! Sorry, my early morning mind just got stuck on the mental image of scorpions enfolded in the tightly packed leaves of a cabbage and I was thinking about how that might actually be a benefit to those who cannot afford meat, etc. Sick sense of humor....well, yeah, I got that!

Although there are some rational, helpful replies to the OP's question, I always wonder when others step in with derogatory posts that assume the original poster is not actually seeking information .. those that do not know the OP, those that do not know the motivation, those that have no information other than some assumption they have made ..
