why do I feel so many vapers like to "collect" and hoard PVs?

I spent 2-1/2 years trying out lots of new vaping toys. It was fun, but it also had a purpose to allow me to create a stash of vaping toys that could last me a VERY long time should it ever become difficult or even extremely expensive to obtain our vaping toys. The hobbie aspect certainly played a part along with knowing that retirement was coming and when it did I wouldn't want to be spending much on vaping any longer but the biggest reason for me was to make certain that no matter what happened in the future I could continue to vape for as long as I wanted to.

For over a year now I've found myself content with the stash I've created and only rarely purchase anything new. I don't see that changing in the future. Every once in a while something new is still fun :D but those new fun toys just don't happen very often anymore.

I'll third the motion on the MVP. I started with a couple of vision spinners so that I'd always have one charged. I still use them as backups and have a bunch of tanks but my main vape is usually the MVP with a Kayfun Lite +. I think the only thing I'm missing is a mech mod to do some sub ohm vaping with the dripper. That would probably mark the end of my hardware buys. I've gotten into DIY liquid and the only thing I really want in that dept. is some different flavorings. I have enough nic, vg and pg to last me 6 or 7 months. Hell, I could just go flavorless. The vapemail has been decreasing.

I never expected vaping to become a hobby for me. Initially I was trying to find the right juice & the right mod for me. It seems like the juice search was the toughest but now I have some go to juices but I like to try new ones from time to time. I also toyed around with different delivery methods until I found cartotanks & fell in love but I still had to try mechs, RBA's & RDA's. Amazingly, I found that I enjoy tinkering. I also like the idea that if there is any major legislation & taxing on vaping gear that I am able to build my own coils & mix my own juice.

I think that we vaping hobbyist are the minority. It appears that there are more of us because of the forum. It seems to me that most people who don't venture into the hobby/collecting aspect of vaping don't hang out here as much after getting the info they need to get them started & successfully transitioned over to vaping. In the end I say do what works for you:)

I agree 100% that the hobbyists are in the minority. Even on this forum there are way more people that aren't buying lots of gear than are. I haven't met many vapers in the wild but every one I have met has no idea about e-cigarette-forum. They also look at my rig like it's some kind of mad max prop (MVP + Kayfun Lite). They are getting by with what they have and that's great. I wish them the best but I like to give them a little more perspective on what's out there and the variety available. I think carto-tanks, with the right instruction, are probably the best way to give someone a very good and very consistant vape.

I consider myself a hobbyist and a user. I tend to keep things that i try as you never know when you may need it one day :)
Curious as to DIY juice, is there a shelf life on the ingredients used if one was to stock pile for the Zombie Apocalypse? ;)

If there is a zombie apocalypse the only ingredient in juice that can really be touched is the nic. That can be stored almost indefinitely (if packed correctly) in a freezer. PG/VG and flavorings all have so many uses outside of vaping that they will never become difficult to get.

From a newbies' point of view, I've recently caught the RBA and mech mod bug. It just seems wonderful that something so simple (battery in a tube) could deliver such a punch. I could still remember how the salesperson was trying to upsell the iTaste when I was just looking for something simple like the ego-t.

I thought to myself no way am I going to start splurging on gadgets. I'm just going to give the ego a shot and see if I can cut down on my analogs. Fast forward 2 days, I'm hooked and starting to feel the limitations of the ego attached with a clearo. While I was amazed by the fact that I've drastically cut down on my analogs, I felt something was missing. Started doing my research on ECF. When I kept reading about how one could elevate the flavour nuances/vaping experience with RBAs and ohms law, I was intrigued.

Five days later, I was the proud owner of an astro and KF3.1. Vaping experience have improved tremendously. Call it a distraction, but this quest for better flavours has allowed me to stop analogs recently. I didn't plan for it. It just happened when I started reaching out for my mod more often than I did for analogs. When the analogs ran out, I just didn't bother to restock.

Right now, I have pre-ordered a RDA, another RBA, spare parts etc and mech clone is on its way. I have also started looking at DNA 30 mods as the allure of consistency and longer vape time keeps gnawing at the back of my head. :p
All in the name of "science" and quest for better flavours; justified by $ saved from quitting analogs. I guess this gear acquistion syndrome will fade out after awhile, once I pinpoint my ideal setup. Or maybe not, only time will tell...

I still have and use some of my older gear. A couple of EGO style batteries that I like to top off with Kanger mini PT2's for starters. They are easy to carry out, and vape very well. 3 mods, a VMAX, a VTR and an SVD. 4 Kanger PT2's, 5 Iclear 30s's, and 3 Iclear 30. I just bought a cheap little dripper, a Smok scar.

Next up for me is going to be a ZNA which I will travel down the road to Rochester to buy. Probably a Russian 91% and I tried a Kayfun clone by Ehpro that I really liked, so one of those too. I guess I find it to be money well spent, especially as I get more experience and patience to research and not just make impulse buys. I was lucky in the sense that I found ECF early on, and quite a few local folks who helped me on my way. Now I buy stuff that makes sense for how I enjoy vaping, rather than the latest and greatest. The new dripper is a good example of that. I didn't want one, because I thought it wasn't me to be fiddling with dripping juice all the time to vape; I was happy with just fill a tank and go. Then I went to a vape meetup and discovered a couple of things. There were lots of juice samples to try, but all I had were filled clearos which were useless to me for sampling. I also tried other peoples set ups with RDA's and the flavor blew me away. I went and bought one yesterday as a result of that experience, and I am very happy with it.

So yeah, to sum up, I guess I was lucky that I didn't wind up with a bunch of garbage when I started to get serious about vaping. I am really pleased with what I have now, so most of my purchases are for juice or consumable supplies like kanthal wire.

The zombie apocalypse is the reason I also collect a lot of mods and bits and pieces to repair those mods with. I think in reality the only thing they can tax to death is the juice. However, if they make juice cost prohibitive(and ban internet sales) I see the demand for mods and RBAs declining as more people are pushed towards cig-alikes. Who will buy a new mod if you can't get juice for it? DIYers are a very tiny portion of the industry. I can't see them being able to keep the modders afloat. But if all that doesn't come to pass, robust nic and mod stores are still a win. I can keep vaping for the rest of my life at today's prices. :vapor:

It was a collecting type hobby for me for a while. Wasted a bunch of money buying clone after clone on Fast Tech, experimenting with different drippers, juices, etc. Then I finally found what works for me: Provari for the house, and Silver Bullet for everywhere else. I gave away quite a few of my clones that were just gathering dust. I think I had to go through that manic phase though, to satisfy that manic obsessive part of me that made me a smoker to begin with.

You have to take into account a couple of different things:

Among those who still smoke cigarettes these days, knowing all the downsides, there's a fairly high concentration of folks who are compulsive/obsessive to at least some degree. When they switch to vaping, it doesn't change that fact.

Among vapers, the ones who are compulsive/obsessive are those most likely to hang out a lot on ECF, which skews the number of posts by them.

Others, seeing the lots of posts about massive gear collections, decide to join in on the fun.

Add the FDA and all the other crap in the media, and voila.

(Been there, still doing that).
