Why do you guys keep calling your PVs "mods"

Modding is slang for modifying something that was not designed to be modified. No one considers putting drapes on your windows a mod, they were designed for that. A mod is a particular kind of modification.

Why do you guys always call vaporizers mods? Even aside from the distinction in voiding your warranty. I constantly see phrases like "what mod should I buy"?

Does this bug anyone else? I guess it bothers me because every time I see the word I think "oh, he's talking about a mod, cool, I wonder what he did", and then I have to remind myself, "oh, it's the e-cigarette community's weird use of the term, for an e-cigarette". I've also never seen anyone correct anyone else on the matter. What gives? There's been a few terminology threads and they all define mod properly.

I feel like there were enough threads where people were talking about their mods and people started to get the idea that all e-cigs are called mods.

I, too have been having trouble understanding exactly why everyone calls them mods, but because literally everyone does it, I've stopped questioning it. I mean everyone. Every single vaper knows it as such because that's just what they are. They're mods.....:|

This is just my viewpoint, I guess I could be missing something...

How I understand it - a mod is a mechanical modification. Meaning there is no circuit board to protect anything - it's a battery or two, an atomizer (sometimes a tank) and perhaps a drip tip and juice.
Or maybe that's just a mech.

A VV or a VW 'mod' is more of an APV. But I have to admit to using the term mod to mean anything that is not an ego type battery lol.

So you might hear me say "I've got a vamo, what should be my next mod..."

I suppose you are going to call us out on calling cigarettes analogues next :D

I love the analogs / analogues slang.

This actually explains a lot. I could never understand the leap from mod to PV. I guess I'm coming on to the scene when there are actually fairly decent products available for purchase that can replace cigarettes, no hacking needed.

Sounds like for a while everyone modded out of necessity, and so the ingenuity was there, but mod developed a ubiquity that stuck. It surprises me that there are not more subcultures where the same thing has happened though.... Oh... nevermind... I just did some Googling on that note, and it looks like gamer forums are also calling the PCs they assemble mods as well. Weird.

I think we all know that a lot of sub-cultures have their own terminology. I throw out abbreviations and vaper slang all the time without really thinking about it. It seems it's true that the real meaning of a word or phrase is not the actual dictionary definition, but the intended meaning if enough people use it that way.

Oh and welcome to the forums :vapor:

This has been bugging me lately too. It's like saying "check out my new modified Ford". And when asked how it was modified you respond "I used to drive a Toyota".

I just fell out of my chair laughing at this, and scared this crap outta my dog. I'm thinking this means I'm too tired and should finally go to sleep since its 4am and I have a ton of cooking to do today.

I always assumed it was a holdover from when anything that wasn't a cigalike was homemade. I kind of thought the grandfathers of what all are called mods now are the cobbled together mechanical mods that clever people made for themselves before anyone was manufacturing high performance PVs.

Yup!

The first "mods" were true mods made in people's garages. My favorite was the Altoid tin mod. :)

Mod:

1) Person who oversees forum posts and make us play nicely together
2) A PV that has been modified in some way - parts, appearance, whatever
3) An AVP - a device batteries are put inside of, as opposed to a one piece unit like an eGo. It makes no sense whatsoever, but is what I mean most of the time when I say "mod." I would prefer "Thingy," but can't seem to get it to catch on.

I always assumed it was because they're modified cig-a-likes, but I could be wrong. & I think you call it "customizing my setup".

Exactly. The first versions did NOT come from Factories but from Vapors looking for a better setup. Perhaps Mod would be best suited to Mechanical Devices as they are constantly the subject of modification for better performance.

Take a read through the Sigelei thread in the APV section :D

This has been said, but I'll toss in anyways. I think the term comes from some of the early mechanicals that people cobbled together to make high performance, low ohm, and in my opinion, dangerous PVs.

That being said, I don't care for the term PV, regardless of its accurate descriptive nature. We need a better name for our vapor things!
