Why make the Mod out of aluminum?

There are pro's and con's to both materials:

Aluminum is cheaper not only in material cost, but more significantly, it can be machined at a much greater feed rate then can Stainless steel. Production cost is therefore lower.

The main advantage of aluminum, though, is not it's cheaper cost, but that it is extremely light weight and pound for pound, quite strong.

Stainless steel on the other hand, costs more, and has slower machine rates, however, it is stronger and thus thinner wall can be used and secondly, it is quite durable. It's main disadvantage is it is over twice the weight by volume then aluminum.

So there are advantages to both materials and disadvantages to both.

Actually there are some benefits of stainless steel over aluminum, for the end user. The threads don't require the application of anti-oxidants to keep them from corroding. Also, stainless will get less scratched up than aluminum will, because it is a harder metal. I have one PV that uses both materials. The battery case is steel and the upper part (switch area) is aluminum. The aluminum has turned a dirty grey from handling, moisture from dripping juice, and exposure to the air. It has a scratch on it from who knows what. The brushed stainless part still looks awesome. So, stainless is a nice choice, but probably is best for small PV's where weight is bit less of a factor.

Exactly why i made the decision to go with stainless on the Mini T. It's a small enough PV. My big boy mod, will probably use Aluminum for the body and Stainless for the 4 in 1 connector.

Anodized aluminum also greatly adds to the sratch resistance of aluminum.

I would have loved to seen the super 6 made out of Stainless Steel!

Jeff

personally I like stainless better, (even tho its heavier)

I strated thread b/c I wanted to see what other people thought and weigh the pros and cons of both a little more.

But it really doesn't matter to me too much.
aluminum is good too.

it all just depends aswell.
I think for a big bat mod alu would be great.

Stainless Steel gets my vote on all PVs...they are used so heavily and subjected to a heavy amount of abuse.

Just thought of an idea/question, David. Is there any way that you could produce some S6 Stainless steel buttons...I have noticed some scratching and this is one part that could probably benefit from the more durable/extra weight of the Stainless Steel material?

Thought it and wanted to get it out there...just want to be constructive not overly critical please don't take it the wrong way...love the S6 but I'm a bit Compulsive on longevity, that's why I love SuperTmanufacturing so much.

I vote for stainless steel in just about any mod David might create. It doesn't take long for my aluminum to get all banged up. I've already scratched my beautiful Super6 - I almost cried! If it weighs more, that's fine by me. I don't mind the heft of my big ol' Chuck at all. It's just really sad the way aluminum bruises so easily. The stainless steel on my PS Prodigy still looks great -- that's the best feature on PS devices. In a perfect world, I'd have a big battery mod and a Super6 from Super T, both crafted in stainless steel. Please think about it, David. If you make it, I will buy it.

I have to agree it is way stronger and less of the material can be used. To moreless make up for cost but it is a little harder to machine. But overall it will give much more strenth. As for the Percise it will no doubt look better and outlast the Super 6.

I think everyone who feels the same shoud say so to David so he can do his best to give us what we want.If we don't let him know he sure can't acomidate and wont know what we really want.

I do agree with booth of you guys Oddgirl and jeffcmfrt....I think an all stainless steel device would be great.....BUT i have a few concerns about the stainless steel....

(1) The weight of the PV might be too heavy to just put in a shirt pocket or carry around...Now i will say this though.... I have a bunch of stainless steel PV's that i have bought in the past (i will not mention which ones out of respect for David)...And the SS preforms just as well if not better than the stainless steel one's... And the SS is very very light compared to my other PV's...And i just find my self going back to the SS all the time because it is so light....But on the other hand,If David was to make an all stainless steel Big Batt Modd i would defiantly buy it, and probably use it just as much as the SS... Cause i do like his PV's as far as reliability and the looks...well i guess i just contradicted my self....But That's just my 2 cents worth....

(2) The cost...I have read somewhere here on the forum that the cost will be very high for an all stainless steel PV....Now to me, i really don't care because i will still buy it, and I'm almost sure, a lot of his costumers will too.....BUT A lot of people will defiantly be turned away from the PV, because of the cost....Just my 2 cents worth.....

I think the weight of the Precise was brought up and wound up being like inbetween the Super 6 aluminum and the super 6 with brass switch and adapters but take into consideration the brass on both ends of the Precise.
Well the Stainless steel being it is stronger the wall can be made thinner and I think the weights can be made pretty close or it may turn out to be a minimul amount over where the lasting and durability of stainless out weighs the slight increase in weight.....overall I would opt for a little more weight I would rather the stainless but if it was a huge difference I would go the other way and choose aluminum.

Also with the threading if you have stainless steel threading going into aluminum threading one must be carefull as the stainless is soo much stronger it will crossthread easy if you are not carefull and cut through aluminum threads like butter. Then again that caution should be used starting any threads in my opinion as crossthreading can happen with aluminum also.
