Why mods instead of cig look a likes?

I went from a 510 and 4 batteries to a Saber Touch mini in my 3rd week Best move I made. I skipped the extended battery and ego phase and went right to a good mod. The Saber Touch mini gives great vapor fits in your hand and can handle low resistance atomizer. Good battery life and great vapor all is fine with the world.

I needed the small cigarette sized unit to help me get off analogs - the dse901 kit did that for me, but soon enough - I - Like a lot of users on here was not satisfied with the battery life, constant refilling etc that comes with the smaller size PV's. I still do use the 901 when driving, just so I don't have a large PV stuck in my face, just asking to get pulled over. Yes a lot of officers are smokers, but a lot are not and immediately think you are smoking crack or weed when they see something that doesn't look like a cigarette. I showed my Apex Ultra to several officers I know, and they all said the same thing - that they would immediately think I was doing some kind of drugs. Granted IF you got pulled over and hassled - eventually you would not be in trouble because they are legal. But there's a lot of cops out there who would arrest you now and worry about lab results later. That's not something I want to deal with. Whenever possible though - I am using one of my mods - as they are MUCH more satisfying to me, so for me the answer is to have both - a cig looking one - and a mod for all of the time I am not out in public.

I've never gotten the whole mod thing either. I've actually tried a couple and wasn't impressed. I use a KR808D-1. The battery life lasts several hours and when it goes dead, it's just sooooo inconvenient to have to pull out a fresh battery and plug the dead one into a charger. Why I bet I spend 10 seconds every time I do that. Who has that kind of time?!?!!!

I started on Magma 510 kit from volcanoecigs. I moved then to a Riva kit that the batteries just kept failing. Im just getting back into the ecigs after I returned to analogs for a year. I blame the poor battery life and constant charging for that. Right now I just have a 5v passthrough from madvapes.com and kicked the analogs. This time around I'm looking for a mod. The GLV-2 and the buzz have my attention. They are bigger units but battery life seems better and the increase in volts have me stoked. Now just to make up my mind which one!

Here's my progression.

RN4081 - looks like a cig! Comes with 1 battery, costs way too much, it can't keep up with my demands. Battery fails, 3 times I return it, where does that leave me?

Joye 510 - Ahh, that's better, no battery failure. Comes with 2 batteries, still won't keep up. Buy a 3rd battery and a PCC. When I go out for the day it still won't keep up. I'm draining them faster than I can charge the darn things.

eGo 900 mah - Ahhhh, that's better yet. Battery lasts all day. I stick an LR on it and it's even better. I could live with this. Oops, I tried a mod, shouldn'ta done that, I was happy, now I'm not.

1st and 2nd mods - AAAAhhhh, this is better, great hit, battery lasts all day. Runs at a higher voltage so the hit is right where I need it. Got a boxmod as a backup. Looks like a pipe bomb, boxmod looks like a detonator button for mod 1. I could definitely live with this, but it looks rough and juice runs inside, gotta find a solution.

3rd and 4th mods - Hit just as good as #1 and #2 but look a lot nicer and are much better built. I can definitely live with this for a long time.

5th mod - Gotta try the Variable Volt option, oooohhhh Madvapes has a VV boxmod and it's not too expensive, lets try it, it can't hurt ya know.

6th mod - Waiting to purchase top of the line VV mod, too expensive, gotta wait for more $$$ in the account. Waiting, waiting, waiting. Still waiting, but I can live with what I've got if I have to.

I went from the Kr808 to ego 510 cause the are more reliable. Now when I try the 808's I am not satisfied vaping. They are Ok but with my Ego's I am good all day and I guess I am lazy cause I don't like to drip or fill the 808 2 or 3 times a day. I don't want my batts to run out either. I carry 4 or 5 with me cause I like to change flavors all day and I don't care if people think I a using a one hitter or not. I have had people say " What's that? a one hitter or a ....?" I just laugh at them and say "ya man it just great" LOL

This is make or break time, because as a new non-smoker, who is on the edge, you are forced to invest alot of $ a second time to succeed. This is where many people stop and put their cig-sized PV's in the desk drawer and resume their old habit of smoking.
If you decided to keep vaping, you're still wanting a cig-sized solution, but now understanding that you must compromise a little bit...Most now turn to the Ego and all it's look-alikes. This keeps us kinda happy for about 2-3 months.
By 3 months, we just don't care what size or shape the thing is anymore, mainly because we don't associate vaping with our long gone habit anymore anyway.
At this point, we just want vaping satisfaction and break down and buy our first mod. We don't care what others think about how it looks..... Because it hits like a champ and it gives us what we have been missing!
So you can see how much $ the average new vaper spends early on, just to come the same conclusion which everyone is telling you here.
Many new vapers now seem to go straight for a mod of some sort. We see it more and more. And we also see them sticking with vaping, far more often!

This was the same for me. I invested in batteries, attys, juice you name it. All that money invested just to decide I needed something more. If I had just gone big right away, I would have saved loads of money and been satisfied right from the start. I still do not have a Mod to use but I do know that my 5v passthrough is heaven for me. So that leads me to believe a mod is a must at this point. For now on I'm pretty confident I'm going to recommend mods as starter pvs for now on. I personally would rather have a device that's too much for me and work backwards.<---if that makes any sense!

Cause for a lot of us the "I want it to look like a cig!" lasts only about a week.

longer you vape the less cig like you want it, need it to be.

Personally I'm to the point I dont want folk to think I'm smoking at all.

With all due respect for mod users, I agree at this time with dormouse. vaping a mini now for almost 3 months. after reading thru post I know I'll get my balls busted, but I use and correct me if I'm wrong a KR808D-1 model from V2cigs. haven't touched an analog since. Yes, when the batteries are low and sometimes in the car, the vapor isn't as satisfying, but I have backups on hand, and once in a while (rare) I'll vape two at a time. i would like to try something bigger and more economical to drip (just ordered flavors from lorann's) so i don't have to order the blank cartridges again from V2, maybe the size of a cigar for home. but i haven't figured out what yet. I never smoked more than half a pack a day however, and this may be why i am satisfied with batteries that last me a day and prefer to carry a mini around in my pocket. I can't picture at this time carrying around anything bigger.

I want something that looks and feels like smoking an analog cigarette, so why do so many want mods and stuff. I certainly don't want it to look like I'm smoking a .... and get pulled over by the cops.

I guess I have a different take on the original question. I think that the OP is peeking in a window here on ECF; the vast majority of people who are using ecigs are not on this forum and are happily vaping a 510 or 401 style, getting local refills at smoke shops and kiosks, and never looking elsewhere.

I know a number of people who got a basic kit, refilled it a few times and eventually stopped both smoking and vaping. The vaping was a means, not an end. Watching them got me started, but I may be a lifer.

I like to dig for answers, get a good deal and mess with stuff I'm interested in. In guitar forums, it's called GAS (Gazing At Stars) when you're pining for that perfect bass (Peavey Dyna-Bass, Meridian Miss.). Here in the ECF community, there are a lot of people who are having fun trying out their options, often helping us all by investing (and sometimes losing) their time and money. It's a cool hobby and place to learn and share.

I think most ecig users just want to stop smoking and that's all they care about this stuff. Just like pc's in 1985, when early adopters would pay hundreds of dollars to crank their Compaq Deskpro 286 up to 10mhz, most people just want an appliance that asks little of them. Most of them just aren't interested in how the appliance works will never see the fun in what we do in this forum.

ECF is a fun and friendly place, but is pretty much at the cutting edge of vaping technology. That's why I'm dreaming of Madvapes coming out with a tumbled VV Maxi Roughstack while I wait for my EGO batteries from China, sucking on a 510. Damn, I'm hooked!

I probably also need to point out that I've been using a homemade bottom feeding mod for several weeks now and it's strange looking. I drive all the time using it. I even drove 4 hours to Atlanta and back using it week before last. Before I made the mod, I used an eGo. I've yet to be pulled over. You guys that are worried about that need to understand that the police have better things to do.

Yup, different for different types of smokers. I was a 1 1/2 pad stronger the better smoker.
The mini was ok if I chewed 2 pieces of nic gum at the same time, took more to satisfy my nic fits.
The mini proved the concept, but could never supply the nicotine fast enough to be successful,
at least for someone who smoked like me.

I progressed much like cskent, M401, DSE801, ego, Provape PV-1, MaxiRoughstack, boxmods, various PT, building a puck now...VV on the horizon,
(quit smoking a month later than cskent so I have catching up to do )

Lol!! I guess I'm just slow. My progression has been: KR808D2 white batt/orange LED, yellow/orange carto -> same batt & LED, black carto -> KR808D1 black batt/green LED, Green carto....and now I have multiple colors of batts and cartos and I've even thrown in a drip tip and a PT. Still loving my cig-look-alike though. Have no plans to go bigger, at least for now. Been vaping since July 2010, but went back to cigs (which had nothing to do with the type of pv I have btw). Returned to vaping in March 2011 and I'm planning on sticking with it this time.
I hate it when people refer to 808's as junk. Many long time vapers like them. It's all a matter of personal preference. Just because a vv or juice box is your perfect pv doesn't mean that everything else is crap. It just works for you. For n00bs the cig-look-alike is usually best. ESPECIALLY if they say "I want it to look like a cig"!

My progression so far is listed in order in my sig, hehe. I'm happiest with my semi-mod (not sure what you call it when you mix and match pieces, and at least one of them is a mod!) followed by the npro. I don't know why I'm having such horrendous luck with the 302. =/ Hoping that switching to a clearomizer or something similar will improve the vaping experience.
