So, Ive been vaping thru a vivi nova, ego ce4 and a protank for the last week or so. Vivi and ce4; Things taste fine for a while, then all of a sudden Im getting the occasional burnt taste. And I mean occasional..quite random, actually. Im using a 2.8 ohm head powered by 3.8 to 4.1 on my Twist. I tip/wick-dip just about every hit in hopes of some consistancy, but it doesnt seem to make a dif. Help! Plz
Protank; metal taste, too airy and leaks when I cover the airflow notches. I often cannot tell weather I got a hit until I exhale as the vape hardly gives a kick OR even a little warmth. Are these normal issues for protanks?
Thanks ECF for this AWESOME site!

Probably whats called a dry hit. The protank should not be as bad but I have had problems with all clearo types as they are top feed. With top feeds it seems no matter how good they are you have to tip them or sometimes the wick runs dry or at least not really wet. So you are vaping hot metal and silica and maybe some carbon build up. When all wicks get old and gunked up you will get that. IME. Things that help is on repairables like the vivi and protank replace the head with a new one and clean the old one. I soak it in alcohol then flush it good I use a water pick then dry burn it if possible or at least let it dry overnight. Then you can take that clean one and reuse it later when you have to refill. The protank really makes it easy to change heads between fillings so I do it every filling now. The Vivi not so much. I will say I get fewer dry hits off the protank I believe because it is a bottom feed system.

I like low resistance (1.8-2.0) and find these coils don't boil the e-liquid as much as they do vaporize most of it. IMO when you have a high resistance coil it takes longer to heat up and it withholds more heat when cooling down (heat capacity). This tends to "boil down" the e-liquid to the sucrose, flavor, and color additives causing the wire that is touching the wick to become insulated, and the result is the wire that is not touching the wick or juice (usually located by the housing) heats up (not being cooled by the juice), and makes your device hot as well.

On your next coil, try drawing from the device while it is not on to wick up liquid, and also try pulse firing the juice a bit hotter every now and then to attempt to melt any deposits. I have found this technique extends the usual mileage of an atomizer or even cartomiser by double!

stay calm and keep vaping my friend!

Good stuff, thanks you two. Not quite ready to get into the rewicking end of this, yet (waiting in my multimeter to arrive), but head cleaning and replacements have occured 2 to 3 times this week! lol
BTW, which US vendor has best pricing on heads for both (top and bottom fed) IYO. Also, steved, are all kanger bottom feeders as airy as the protank?
Thanks again guys! :)

Chain vaping likes to rear the ugly head of dry hit or, even worse (IMHO at least), the awful "water-thats-been-too-long-in-plastic" taste, especially with the CE4, as far as i've seen and sometimes with the 1.8Ohm atty on the vivi nova as well. depends on the taste and thickness of the e-liquid.

I've found that the vivi nova burns the RY4 at anything below 2.8Ohm, yet vanilla demands 1.8 for the richness of the taste. Then again, it all depends on the juice, tank/clearo/atty/battery combination, so as always, try experimenting :)

The answer is not an easy one but some variables that some have already mentioned
1. Too high of a voltage on Clearomizers you find less voltage or wattage whatever you use even with high ohm clearomizers
you mentioned this problem I have some Ce4's I picked up cheap I use as experimental's and I cannot go over 5.5W or about 3.5 Volts without a burnt tase..
2. Type of liquid you are using and the percentage of VG vs PG and alcohol content.. Every juice I am sure you have noticed not all but many are different one will be great in a tank like a dual coil tank then be horrid in the CE.X series one fix is to start making your own juice I started out 2 months ago using everyones juice until I found the secrets to even duplicating them ( not as easy as it sounds) and now I make Liquid for the caromizer, atomizer clearo etc that I am using this also effects smoke density as well as your voltage you use..
3. As others said worn our wire or Nylon fiber haha I think one day I actually smoked some fiberglass haha

There are more reasons as others said but the best idea for clearos in my opinion is do not use them that is IMHO the new Iclear I6 and I30 are similar but dual coil and I love them I cannot stand the Kanger Protank I cannot believe after looking at it its just a freaking T3 coil very disappointing with it try some dual coil I6's that would be my quick fix and to heck with the clearo's for most liquids if you never plan on making your own fluid... hope this helps

Try AS AN EXPERIMENT:

With the vivi nova....tip it and then hold it upright so you can loosen the top. Losen it about 1/2 way and vape a bit being careful not to spill the juice. Did it help?

A) Yes = the wicks are being pinched by that little silicone cap inside between the head and the top. Look inside it and see a little metal washer. Make sure the flat side of that washer is facing down toward the coil. If so, check that you don't have knock-off clone stuff. Maybe cut a notch in the cap or rearrange the wicks in the slots.
B) No = you still have a wicking problem, but it's not the silicone cap pinching them. Either juice is too thick, wick is too gunked, coils are dirty/gunked.

Can't burn without either tons of gunk on coil from "dirty" juice....or in 99% of the cases...also/only a wicking issue.

I have found the carto tank set ups to really work best for me. Protank was airy and all over the place even with custom heads. Tried about everything in it. Best performance was after the first 5 hits and before 3rd tank. Iclear 16 was to hot for me. I still use them at home but have use a carto tank when I'm busy or don't have tie to jack with it

Wanted to thank You, the experiment worked. Turns out MFS sent smoktech heads with my vision vn when I opted for the additional 5 heads, assuming theyed send the same brand I bought. Ugh! So, indeed the larger sized coned cap was too tall and pinched off the wicks, but if I didnt get the cap on tight enough the atty would not engage :-/
Now, I must make do with my original caps..still a tight fit, but functional.
Anywho, thanks again for taking time to help out! Take Care :)
