Most of the time I use 100% VG but instead of threading the cotton wick through the coil, I make a small bed of cotton for the coil to sit in. I much prefer this method as it seems to work better for me and rewicking is a snap.

That is what I do when I use cotton. For me, a bed works MUCH better than inside the coil.

I prefer xc-116, I coil it freehand and not micro and that stuff sucks up the juice very well and lasts weeks and weeks, basically until the coil itself wears out.

Hmmmm... guess I will have to try the "bedding" technique with some cotton. Something new to fiddle with! :)

It takes the tiniest amount, I just sort of form a ball about the shape of the coil, maybe an iota wider, then push it under the coil with whatever is handy, usually a toothpick or my mini screwdriver thingy. I was shocked it worked, but it does. The coil doesn't go red, it keeps it just cool enough to produce nice vapor. I use pretty much all VG except the flavorings, and squonk every few hits using a ribbon coil in micro-mode at 1.1 ohms for this build. I think last build was 28 micro...

Do you cover the feed hole with the bedding?

No, the coil is off to the side of the hole so it can drain.

Got it, thanks!
Just for giggles I'm going to try and put a little cotton "bedding" under my existing coil/wick setup with the xc132. Maybe it will be the best of both worlds? The cotton will soak up the juice and keep the xc & coil wet!?

Why not? What's the worst that could happen right? Let us know how it works for you.

I'm surprised there hasn't been more mention of hemp fiber in this thread, I'm really liking the hemp fiber, all the benefits of cotton and then some but much more durable and resistant to burning,

yes it will still burn, it's nothing like silica, but it's not as easy to burn like cotton is. cotton is to hemp fiber as paper is to wood, both will burn but the cotton burns really easily. the hemp wicks and holds juice way better than anything else out there, including cotton. it is a bit of a chore to get and clean and prep as it's no where near as clean as sterilized cotton to begin with but do it just once to wind up with many years worth of wicking material. cleaned and prepped well it is completely tasteless to the vape and really is great I think...

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions and comments! Special thanks to Jan for offering to send me some samples!

I'm on my phone, so I can't multi quote. So off the top of my head, re the cotton thickness--every time i tried using the smaller amount of cotton (ie barely feeling it or pulling it out accidentally with cracks in my cuticle), the wick has seemed to burn mid-vape. If I didn't mention it before, I'm vaping @.5 on my grand (which has been fine with cotton and a twisted Rene coil for a week or so), and at .7-.8 on my mini, where I've been having the problem. It seems like the wispier wicks don't soak up enough juice to stay wet through a whole vape.

Re the bed of cotton--I tried it with a Z oriented nano coil, with the coil aimed straight at the air hole. Worked great for vapor, but seemed to be really sweet tasting and never mellowed out. When I bumped the wick/pad more around the coil, it got super muted and muddy tasting. Maybe I'll try a combo of a pad under and a thin cotton through-wick using a micro coil placed horizontally in front of the airhole.

I'll try it tonight and post the results pics.

And Dibby, yup, I'm

i just tried my first silica wick ... had started off using cotton ... but would burn it up to quickly ... the silica is more manageable for me ... may try out some other similiar stuff .. oddly enough i seem to get a little more flavor from the silicia over the cotton ... (i am running 28ga at about 1.9 ohms with 2mm wick doubled up)

Had to resurrect this thread to give a shout out to Jan. Thanks again for sending the supplies. I actually haven't tried anything except the koh gen do cotton. That stuff rocks! I don't know if I suddenly got it better, but I haven't been suffering wick issues for a while now.

I think my wicks are a bit smaller, but the main thing I've done is make sure not to push them too hard for the first 10+ vapes. That seems to let the juice cook/soak into the cotton and build enough tolerance to keep me from burning the wicks.

i'm in the same boat. trying everything else because i damage the coil half the time i need to re-wick. i just want to be able to dry-burn and that's it. trying xc-132/116 and ekowool, tho the vote aint in yet.

I've been using the xc-132 for quite awhile now on my road Reo and on my lady's REO.
I am formally a strickly cotton user and do still use on my home REO . Whats great about the xc is once you build it you can forget about it! No checking for burnt wicks, sqounking frequency, re wicking while your on the road, in the office, or driving! I build a nice microcoil and it will last me a month! I just dryburn every other day and it looks good as new. NO BURNING!! I find not that big of a difference in vapor production or flavor between the xc and cotton. perhaps a tiny bit more of both with cotton after a perfect squonk. I need to squonk a bit more often with the xc as it's not quite as absorbant as cotton but no biggie to me. It's just like the battery commercial the xc keeps on going, and going!!
It's also perfect for my lady as she is not a big fan of mainatance or rewicking, she just wants to vape and if it's not perfect hands it to me and says "it's not working right"! I weaned her off cotton real quick! :)
