What about the the fumes from the burning of fiberglass? Not to start a war but IMO it seems like cotton is a safer bet. I could be wrong but after reading this whole thread it seems to me cotton is the way to go. That being said there have been no double blind official studies published so I think we all have to pick what we think is the safest way to vape for each if us. For me its cotton.

Thanks,

Chris

I liked cotton, but in a dripping only atomizer... I just keep letting it get a little dry and then *poof*, nastly horrible smoky vape. I'll stick with mesh until they make a cotton that withstands that LOL.

I see it wicking good but what's this I heard about inhaling burnt cotton fumes is hazardous.

Hmmm, the only time I burnt a cotton wick was when I vaped my Phoenix dry ( btw, I hate dripping ;)). One vape it was fine, next vape a slight burnt taste. You can tell when it happens.
Inhaling anything burning can't be the best for anyone.
Inhaling anything other than purified air isn't safe. But cotton wicks so much better than silica that I'll take the very slight chance that I'll burn a cotton wick over the certainty that I'll be getting a 'dry hit' with silica.

Other than stopping by and stating that you've 'heard' that inhaling burning cotton is dangerous, well, duh!, could you give some facts? Links to some info that states that maybe getting one hit with some burning of a cotton wick every once in a great while is any less safe than any other way of vaping? I've heard that some stainless steel contains lead. Does this mean all SS contains lead? No, it doesn't. I could stop by one of the SS wick or genesis atty threads and let them know this fact; but it's irrelevant, most SS mesh that is used to make wicks is produced as filter material where anything containing lead wouldn't be wanted.

Thanks for stopping by though, do read some of the posts here and if you have any pertinent questions we'd be more than willing to answer them. :D

Cotton Wicking material

there's been a revolution!

I searched here and found some decent looking cotton wick too, and priced decently :)

http://www.wickstore.com/default.aspx put cotton wick in the search field to bring up all cotton wick.

They have a hemp cored cotton wick too =

The cotton core wick looks good too, cotton outer W/cotton core =

Tom do you hear that "hssst" sound at the end of your drags? I hear it more than I'd like!

@TomCatt

Impressed that you're getting a pure cotton vertical wick working in your Vivi Tank. Only time I tried this on the Zenesis it burnt up right away lol

how hot are you running it?

Based on Smoke ??,,, we aren't smoking we are vaping, big difference in my opinion

Somebody was asking about cotton smoke, as in if the wick goes dry and burns up. That does in fact produce smoke from burning cotton.

But as I was saying, that study doesn't mean anything to us, because even if you do inhale the smoke from a cotton wick burning up, it's not enough to worry about, just a disgusting hit, than replace the wick.

i was following another thread on here about cotton wicks and the fumes from burning cotton are deadly.

And what about burning tobacco? Tens years of smoking etc... Just compare amount of organics in one cig and wick. Even if you will burn your wick daily.

Are you, perhaps, writing about the post linked to below?

Just curious. Either way, I haven't seen any data that seems to back up yours or his warnings. I'll have to look into this some more, I guess, but I'm certainly not alarmed at this point...

Links to actual data that supports and warrants a dire warning are always welcome.

Zippo wicks have a metal wire in them that will short the coil, bought four to try and they are useless, pain to try and remove the wire in the weave.

Ok thanks :) I thought that was not a good idea :) I will read the whole topic and find something useful :) if not then I will buy the original.

Around 8 watts. I haven't had any wicking problems with the SmokTech rebuildable once it was switched over to cotton. I have two, this one wasn't modded other than using a cotton wick; the other, I enlarged the wick holes.

I've tried rolled cotton - both ends in the tank, one end in the tank; and SS mesh, no problems so far.

Also, there is nothing about a zippo wick that even suggests it needs to be food safe for it's intended purpose so I would highly doubt that it is.

sounds good man

I'd blame my fiendish sprint vaping at 10-12 watts but BJ seems to have no issues at 10-11 so instead I'll blame my silly fingers lol

The mini vivi is actually working a bit better than when I last posted at 10.5ish watts, I just have to tip more than I like. I'm gonna hunt for needle files and do some tinkering with the wick slots

I found this... http://ehs.sph.berkeley.edu/krsmith/CRA/tb/WangCZ_1998.pdf

But it is based on inhaling ALOT more than you would get from a burned wick, over time.

Poor rabbits. Suffocating them with their own bunny balls. :(

Adult male New Zealand White rabbits were anesthetized and intubated with cuffed endotra-
tubes. The animals were paralyzed and ventilated with cotton smoke or room air. The smoke was produced by combustion of cotton toweling and was insufflated into the lungs with the aid of a mechanical ventilator (model
607, Harvard Apparatus Co., Dover, MA), as described previously [6]. The chemical composition of similar
cotton smoke has been published elsewhere......

Great visual aid but it got me thinking...has anyone thought of actually up-scaling a PV?, nothing stupid and certainly not something you'd pack around, more like a Hookah type design...something with a 1/4" wick, a healthy wrap of maybe even 28 awg kanthal (or thicker), a regulated PSU that could bang out 4-5 amps no sweat...I'm not talking about making something that would be over the top un-vapable but something you have at home, that because of no size constraints and larger surface areas, would last quite a while???

Side by side a Vivi genesis type converted to a genesis with a #500 SS wick 2.6 ohm 32g A1 7/8 wrap. 5.5v
Vivi nova cheesecloth wick thru coil, small batten wick over same coil at 5v.

Both monster vaper, both excelent flavor and TH, the 500 ss gives much more vaper than the 400 as it keeps the coil wetter, almost as good as cotton. Cotton still slightly fuller vaper and the 500 a little hotter TH but I am very satisfied with both.
