Bamboo Wick Initial Impressions:

I just re-built a stock Vivi Nova head, right out of the package with 8 threads of Aunt Lydia's #10 Natural, boiled for 25 mins.

I put in 34ga Kanthal for 6/7 wraps. Eight threads fit very nicely in the 1.5mm slot. After 20 minutes of tweaking the coil to get it to work, I got 2.6 ohms. (I have been easily wrapping cotton fatties for the last two weeks, so this was a big PITA on a comparative basis but I am probably just out of practice.)

I put a in two ml of no flavor/no nic 50/50 PG/VG juice and let the wick settle for about 15 minutes. I hesitantly did a few open top burns, to see what was going on with the coil/wick and do a smell check. The first couple of short fire bursts at 3.7 got a nice sizzle, but I noticed a slight woody burning smell. Did about 10 more short bursts and the woody smell is gone. I slowly increase burn times and volts.

I put through about 1.5 mls and I can say that this 8 thread wick has juice through-put as good my 5mm cotton wicks. No dry hits, I went at it with 3,4 and 5 sequential draws and it still was going strong. Since I was using a no flavor juice, I can't comment on how flavors will come through, but I can say, that I did not taste or smell anything but the PG/VG. It was very neutral.

After a couple of periodic peeks at the coil, I got a short somewhere so I decided to just pull the coil and get a better look at what was going on.

Not bad, but it really only had a limited life.

Overall, I was very, very impressed with the wicking capability and to be able to just pop this into a stock vivi nova is a big plus. Not sure yet if I will use bamboo to replace cotton. I kind of like/got use to that well...that cottony smoothness.

How hot did you ultimately run it ?

Interesting that I had the epic fails by doing what you did. Goes to show you the stuff happening on the vaper side of the PV really matters

I worked it up to just under 9watts when it shorted and I pulled it. I may have gotten lucky on the coil wind and getting the right diameter wraps around the wick. Doing hand wraps can be hit or miss. I used a small paper clip and it took me two tries to get it right.

I dont like small tight coils. I would rather do a larger diameter coil with less turns. With a larger diameter coil, I can use a guide (screw and straw) and then thread my wick though it, as compared to guessing how tight my coil wind needs to be for a small coil using the paper clip. It all about pinch points on the wick and getting enough room to accommodate wick expansion in the coil.

With Bamboo, it look like a Silica replacement.....small coils, a few threads..

Does anyone have Aunt L's #10 and some of Supervape's bamboo yarn? My sample from Super is about 2mm made up of 6 smaller strands. I was wondering how the 'size' of the #10 compares to my sample from Super.

don't have supervapes, but each strand of #10 is small, maybe 3-4 of them looks like a 2mm silica wick

I rewicked and coiled my Penelope 2 days ago with some cotton cheese cloth 40 thread width rolled and twisted with 34 gauge nichrome coil. I agree with that cottony smoothness! I'm on my 4th tank load and even switched flavors on this last one. So good! Thank you for the feed back and tests everyone!

Initially I was using 34g kanthal because I've generally vaped 2.5 - 3 ohm. Been rolling me some fatty cotton wicks lately; last night set up another wick/coil with 34g and ended up with a 4.4 ohm coil ; said enough of that and pulled out the 32g this morning. 2.6ohm 5/6 coil, much better.

Been bidding on some bamboo/'modal'/cotton yarn on eBay.

There's some 'milk' or 'milky' yarn on eBay; and apparently there is a yarn made from milk proteins that is pricey. However, there's some yarn company taking another to court for selling a 'milk' yarn that they say contains acrylic fiber; so if anyone sees this stuff on eBay, I'd steer clear of it.

OK

Filed out my Vivi Mini as well, set it up with CC

between this and the filed out E1/bamboo, I have to say I'm more happy with these cheapo clearos than I've ever been, only way to beat them is with the bank breaking RBAs...maybe :) It truly is a close race!

I'm glad most have success without boring out their wick holes, but I have to say for me its made a world of difference

Now roll up a wick and tell me how it works for you :D

You can be my test monkey, cause it's $25 for a 6x6 sheet of 500SS in the states, and I'm extremely hesitant to try it, but trust your opinion
