Wick materials. Safe vs dangerous.

I never used the silver wire fro my NR...I just had a 50' or so roll of this 10 awg stranded wire left over from something, when I stripped one of the wires I got 20 or so nickel plated copper strands, works great and use it still today...I got stuck once down at the cottage and cut a 6" chunk off a lamp cord, same thing just not as many strands...the NR/kanthal/NR thing isn't all that fussy, and that type of wire isn't in there long enough for any corrosion concerns...but ya, with these rba's on cotton, once you get your kanthal and juice everything else is a Safeway and Canadian Tire away and it's so cheap it may as well be free.

I have been using the pure silver (40' for $11) and its amazing how easy it is to work with. The biggest problem is its so soft that once the Kanthal is oxidized b4 wrapping, the Kanthal is rigid one must take care when wrapping them together as to twist properly b4 doing the back bend & wrap.

Whats the difference between the cheesecloth and the gauze sponges? Besides that the gauze is multi ply cheesecloth.

I'm not sure, I've yet to get med. gauze sponges but from the Google images I've looked at, I'd say you're right, same weave and everything.

Washed the coil/cotton wick with hot running water just now (~1.5 to 2 weeks being used w/o cleaning). Some of the crud came off; but not all. I pulled the wick through the coil to remove the stained (burnt?) area from the coil, blotted it dry and slapped it all back together and am vaping it. Previously when it crudded up, I just removed the old wick, dry burnt the coil and added a new wick.

Classic example where cheese cloth may not work all that well...sliding a wick into an existing coil...too many things to snag on...

So I was thinking last night about the thread count...I wonder if you could use cotton sewing thread?, if you pulled off a say 10' or so and doubled a double of a double of a double of a double of a double (gotta count, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64)...I'm curious how it would wick with 64 individual strands floating around in a tank?

I'm not sure, I've yet to get med. gauze sponges but from the Google images I've looked at, I'd say you're right, same weave and everything.

I've used cheesecloth to filter used cooking oil b4 storing it. I have the gauze in hand. I think the ply is the only diff. Where does the"cheese" term come from? Its just a cotton weave cloth right?

heh heh, used my iPod touch cam for those pics - just had a lighted 30x magnifier (from eBay) between it and the CE2. Got the magnifier to look at coils and wicks

So can I change horses mid race...starting to really embrace cheese cloth...the end product is not as aesthetically pleasing as rolled but in regards to being able to reproduce a wick again and again is proving to be most helpful. Here's a pic of the piece of cheese cloth I install in my V3:

In reference to the above pic, there are aprox. 65 vertical threads in an 85mm wide cut. The horizontal threads prove to be too arbitrarily spaced and simply can't be relied upon for anything approaching scientific methodology so I have dismissed them (note to self, send a stern letter of condemnation to the cheese cloth manufacturer re: QC)...I have taken 20 random 85mm cuttings with the same weave bias and counted the vertical threads...65 +/- 3, 19 times out of 20, for the purpose of rewicking my V3, I'm good with that...next, find the "best vert. thread count" for my Line.

Well you could always make the peace sign, then wrap the 10' of thread around your fingers and get a nice even length wick.
You could also pull the individual threads out of the cheese cloth like Evilgrim did.

I would think that because silk is essentially a protein, heating it up to a couple hundred degrees might have some... unsavoury results...you could try it, don't think it would be dangerous, just kinda gross

I picked up a Vision Stone V3 tank a while ago. I wasn't getting any vape taste from it (others reported similar results), so I sat it aside with a thought to make it re-buildable. The CE2-style 'innards' screw onto the tank bottom and the wires from the coil just clip onto the center post and the bottom fitting. I opened the clips holding the wires and removed the wires and coil. Replaced the wires with 24 gauge SS wire, ran the wire through the ceramic cup wire holes and made hooks over the outside of the ceramic cup. The 'hooking over the cup' has been brought up in the http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-repairable-ce2.html?highlight=repairable+ce2 thread - so not something I came up with.

Made a MONSTER cotton wick from batton, wrapped a coil with 34 gauge kanthal - came out to around 3 ohm. Attached the coil to the SS wire hooks and added some of my semi-tasteless juice (it's either the juice or I'm going through the tasteless vapor stage again - no biggie, I didn't smoke for the taste ) and started vaping . I took the silicone cup seal out after a couple of vapes - I don't use seals in my clearos and the Stone tank with the seal in had a hard draw to it.
