Does anyone know the physical dimensions of square braided 100% cotton candle wick like this stuff? Square Braided 100% Cotton wick 6/0, 4/0, 2/0, 1/0, #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6 | eBay

I want to rewick a CE3 but I have no clue what size to buy. All of this "6/0, 4/0, 2/0, 1/0, #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6" is meaningless to me. I googled for two hours and was not able to find the physical dimensions that correspond to these wick numbers.

One other quick question, is 36 gauge kanthal A1 a good choice for an CE3 rebuild? I prefer higher resistance coils, around 3 ohms.

I found this page that describes the diameter of each gauge, at the bottom of the page:

    Wick Chart

Wick Size Core Type Burn Rate Wick Application

    Square Braid Wick
Used in Beeswax, Soy Wax, Veggie Wax & Citronella
    Return to Top
    #6/0 4.59 1/4" - 1/2" dia. tapers, beeswax tapers
    #5/0 4.87 1/2" - 3/4" dia. tapers, beeswax tapers
    #4/0 5.54 3/16" - 1/2" dia. tapers, beeswax tapers
    #3/0 6.11 1/2" - 3/4" dia. tapers, beeswax tapers
    #2/0 5.98 2" - 3" dia. pillar candles
    #1/0 6.96 1" dia. pillar candles
    #1 7.33 1" - 2" dia. pillar candles
    #2 7.46 2" - 3" dia. pillar candles
    #3 8.09 3 1/2" - 4" dia. pillar candles
    #4 8.83 4" - 4 1/2" dia. pillar candles
    #5 9.96 5" - 5 1/2" dia. pillar candles
    #6 10.25 5 1/2" - 6" dia. pillar candles
    #8 11.02 large outside containers
    #10 12.72 large outside containers

36 Gauge Kanthal would be good for 3ohm coils, it's what I use, and I usually get 3-3.5ohms with a 4/5 wrap, depending on how fat of a wick I roll.

I've used the #1/0 candle wick as is but found it too densely braided to wick at the high rate I need. Unbraided strands work awesome for me.

I agree, I'm a 1.5 - 1.8 ohm on batt V chain vaper guy...maybe it's just me/devices, but I find that the rolled cotton, cheese cloth, or my new fav, 170 SS mesh with cheese cloth thread wrapped under the coil are the only things that wick/recover fast enough...but again, that's just me...

Thanks for the confirmation on the kanthal. Unfortunately, the diameters listed in the table above are the diameters of the candle each wick size is suitable for, not the diameter of the wick itself.

Are you saying that you use this type of candle wick but you unbraid the strands before winding the kanthal/nichrome?

I only have #1/0. It measures ~2.3mm or 3/32" across the diagonal.

    Thanks!

Does anyone else have other sizes? I assume from the ebay pricing that #2/0 is smaller than #1/0 and #1 is bigger than #1/0.

I redid my phoenie like that. I used some old unburnt carto diaper over the ss and under the wire and it is so goooood. 1.5 ohms and I'm still on my first 18650 of the day.
Every now and then you get the perfect hookup and this is one of those times. Knock on wood. :>)

Is the "carto diaper" in between the coil and the SS, or did you literally wrap it around the coil and SS? Just curious... I may try it when I get home.

Has anyone tried actually dry burning cotton yet? No - I'm not being a smart___ - I'm just curious, does it go up in huge flames or something?

I'm just wondering why manufacturers are SO reluctant to try this.

It's easy (easier than Silica IMO) to tell when it's getting dry, it doesn't burn up if even a little wet, and it's not like you won't ruin a carto if you burn it dry as well, so what REALLY is the hold-up here....?

I only have #1/0. It measures ~2.3mm or 3/32" across the diagonal.

Which is the exact same size of the 3mm Silica wick. The 3mm silica wick that comes with all of the GG devices is 2.3 to 2.4mm dry. The cotton puffs out a bit more once it starts to wick and is more like 3.5 mm.

The #1/0 is the ideal wick for the GG devices and is also a good fit for the ViVi nova. The #2/0 might also work as I believe Blackwater is using it as per his previous posts. I've found this one though and it works so I'm going to stay with it.

    Update:
1 week in and #1/0 wick is still going strong in my daily driver using Heaven's Nectar juice. The silica would have been long dead by now as I've not had one go past the 4-5 day mark without starting to taste awful. I'm really impressed.

Also I re-did some other devices and I will note that after the wick has been boiled, dried and stored it takes it a little bit of time to start wicking really well. I would say it takes a good 5 minutes for it to start flowing juice again in an Odysseus. While freshly boiled it was wicking immediately. I'm not sure what's causing that but it doesn't really matter as the performance is great after the initial 5 minute break in.
