Wick materials. Safe vs dangerous.

I tried the cotton balls too, yesterday, I'm doing something wrong. Burnie burnie burnie. Not wicking nearly enough, I don't know if the wick itself is too tightly rolled, too fat for the hole, coils wrapped too tight, too loose, etc. I'm not quitting tho.

Rolled cotton (same as baton and to a lesser degree balls) is really susceptible to choking...rule of thumb for that type of cotton...less is more ...for an average wick in an average device your piece of cotton (at full natural loft, aka before you roll it) should be no more than a 1/4" thick...

Very tight, 60mm rolled down to to 2.5mm dia. with very small center hole.

Wow - that is wrapped pretty tight if you're starting w/ 60mm wide. When using 400x400, starting at 35mm wide, it gets pretty dense. Is the 500 that much 'thinner' than 400?

Quit 35mm a long time ago when I finally realized it was capillary action we were dealing with and more was better, I went to 45, then 55mm and now I do 60mm on both 400 or 500. The wire in the 500 is the same dia as the 400 just closer together, the denser I get it the more it wicks.

I found that if I matched the fully ( very tightly) compressed rolled material diameter to the hole opening, I was able to eliminate choking for cheesecloth and cotton batton. Cheesecloth worked very well and did not have any leaks or flooding. Batton started out good, but is currently tailing off with a bit of gurging. The batton has almost equal performance to the cheesecloth in term of vapor/flavor, but the cheescloth has a beautifully smooth draw.

Both compressed diameters were ~3MM

I personally don't know what it is with rolled cotton...it starts so good (like it doesn't get any better good), but it does tail off pretty quick, but that could be just me (and apparently you too )...I ran it in my Ody for a dozen builds or so but just couldn't get over the unpredictability of the swell and it either gurgling or choking...but in the Vivi Nova's, it's awesome...I guess the Vivi's are a lot more forgiving (or I simply suck at building my Ody )...my roll of cotton is now mostly supplying me with what will probably be 5000 years or so of bunnyballs.

Best of both worlds? This is going in my next Vivi Nova rebuild. Not sure if something like this would work in an Ody...

Make sure you read the label. A lot of gauze is a polyester blend. I only found one brand today by Qurad that specifically stated 100% cotton. Obviously if a single strand is not stretchy like polyester, it's cotton. You can hold the two side by side and obviously tell what it is.

Instead of gause can't you just use 100% cotton food grade cheese cloth?

Absolutely. Look back a bit and you'll see detailed set ups using cheese cloth.

Typing "Cheese Cloth" will take you seconds. Remembering "CC" among the myriad of abbreviations and threads and perhaps looking back for reference will take many people many seconds. ...though certainly "CC" in context of a single thread might not be too difficult, as long as one retains cognition of the context.

I endeavor t to spell out anything much beyond PG and VG.

That's all I ever use. I now take out the removable barrier to stop the ejuice from accumulating in there. But found it's not needed anyway since the ejuice travels around the sides and through a small hole on the top and nothing can really get through that way anyway. These tips also work well if you don't like hot vapor. It brings the temp down.

Also, there is nothing about a zippo wick that even suggests it needs to be food safe for it's intended purpose so I would highly doubt that it is.

on a different not that has nothing to do with the above is I think it is funny how some people switch to vaping then worry about the small things that could be potentially harmfull but a thousand times less than that of smoke but are still worried but were'nt worried about the smoke they were inhaling for god only knows how long lol

If I remember correctly, Zippo wicks have metal wires in them to keep the wick in one piece and easier fit it through the lighter. It's been 3+ years since I've had to rebuild my Zippo's, but I believe that's the case.

I think the biggest issue concerning harmful wicking materials is that none of us know any long-term side effects. With smoking, you're well aware of the long-term issues and the outcome based on 60 years of it's existence, while it's only been a few years with ecigs. I think the primary concern by most people about the little things with ecigs is justified, but I also believe it to be a "harm reduction", rather than intrinsically safe. I knew walking into the ecig world that very little testing had been done, but since I knew every ingredient in the liquid I was vaping, and I know exactly what's in my rebuildable atomizer, I don't worry about it at all.
