polyfill is for holding joose only. Should never be used on or in a coil. It will burn nasty.
Not sure that answered your question.
Not sure that answered your question.
I've never seen anything from the factory that didn't have a silica wick in the coil. They may have cotton 'diapers' around the outside of the coil to keep from burning the polyfill, but there was still a short length of silica inside of the coil.
If there are any that are silica-free, I haven't seen them. Doesn't mean that there aren't any, obviously, but I have my doubts.
So I finally broke down and order some of that famous Aunt Lydia's Bamboo thread. I have a couple questions though. I'm currently using it in a ViVi Nova and was previously using cheese cloth. I just got done boiling and building two heads. The first head I used three threads and after putting it together it looked too little. The second one I used four threads and it seems to fill nicely, no visible area around the wick where flooding my be an issue.
I vaped on the three threader for about 20 minutes and flavor was spot on, vapor production wasn't as much as the cotton but I'm having a hard time going above 1.6 ohms, 6 wraps. I took it out and looked and within 20 minutes the wick started turning that orangish/yellowish color.
I vaped on the four threader and about the same performance but the flavor was just a little off.
The two questions I have is what do you guys consider a burnt wick, black or that orange/yellow color?
The second question is do you guys boil this stuff and is it really necessary?
I'll continue to vape on it and see where it goes. Something I noticed though is laying out the heads that I used on a paper towel, it took literally about 3-5 minutes and it was bone dry. Weird.
I tried it all but never been satisfied as with silica wick...so I laid hands on braided wick and just to be sure,I tie lil knots on the ends of the tails,so no possible fraying now.
Wicks like nothing I tried.
None of my DC or TC had silica wicks in the coil, main reason I went to them until I discovered SS. They did have a silica sleeve to cover the solder points and facilitate an air hole thru the cart. Here is a pic of a DC taken apart.

That's quite interesting. Thanks for the pic. Was there nothing inside of the coil, or some cotton?
It looks as if they atomize the liquid off of the diaper on the outside of the coil, which is strange.
I'm running 6 strands through the coil and down into my juice in my Vivi Nova and another 4 strands just laying on top of the coil and cut so they are just sticking out of the sides of the head, vapes mightily...you'll get the orangish/yellowish color pretty quick but then stays that way for a while, just sort of an initial burn in...as for boiling it, yup...it tastes and wick better after a boil...
Wait a second here, so there are cartomizers you can buy that dont use silica wicks? I am currently smoking the v2 carts until I get my first actual vaping gear here in a few days, and I am worried about the silica, does boge use silica? If someone knowledgeable could throw down some names that dont I would much appreciate it.
There is a whole thread on this, I even did lab tests on the burnt cotton diaper, must have torn apart over 100 DCs. Yes they burn the juice off the diaper and if a little dry they burn the diaper. There is nothing in the coils,

A 3.1 ohm on a vivi nova 32g with 6 strands thru and 3 over of Lydia's at 6 volts is a monster vaper. The flavor is very good but there is a subtle perfume taste or a sweetness I hadn't tasted with other wicks. This coil was rolled on a 3mm screw to be able to get all that wire in there and I pulled the thread thru after testing it dry.
Bored out ceramic cup on a fluxomizer, hot rodded with 30awg kanthal and silver wire at 2.0 ohms, something like 10 strands of bamboo, I lost count lol
This is after 2 mls run on a V4L auto (4.2 volts off the charger)
I really miss my autos, this set up may have me reaching for them a little more. Anyone got a light?
