Hey can anyone guide me through the process of making a coil with cotton candle wick for a penelope? How different is it from making a coild with silica? Or are there better alternatives? someone told me about bamboo, im really not sure, i just wanna give something other than silica a try.

I put this together a while ago using cheese cloth...works and tastes great...easier to do than Lydia's (less strands to deal with) but in my opinion the taste of bamboo and it's longevity is a win over cheese cloth but meh, here's a vid if you want...

No that one is easy to imagine

You mentioned doing something like that with the ce3 ? Was wondering how you dealt with the wick slots and length of wick

Will post pics as soon as it needs a refill - but this too was very simple (i am a novice lol). Took out the Silica wicks - that is what took the longest time. Next I used a needle and ran through a double of Aunt Lydia's #10 Bamboo through the coil - not sure if I will try this again - the coil on mine is kinda lower than the cup - so I kinda had to angle up the needle if you will - thought I had busted the coil. Snipped these flush with the metal casing with nail clippers. Next I rolled some BB thin enough so the middle tube wouldnt squish it. Trimmed this as well. Both wicks trimmed flush. Put the tube back on - u know the rest.

I will say this - the first fill great TH/FL/VP - second fill - FL/VP is about the same - TH is lower (i do vape 100% VG though). Cant take it more than 3.9Vs now - dry hits. Maybe these like taking a bath after every use - lol....let me know if this makes sense - if now I will post some pics.....

I don't know about candle wick but if you are planning to use cotton wick in your Penelope then #1 square braided cotton is the easiest way to go. It fits in the channels perfectly. It's fairly stiff so you can coil it without a paperclip, just wrap loosely. It has that funky taste at first like all cotton but since I started boiling it for 30 minutes first that funky taste goes away faster.

Lol Quigsworth, you're making me want to go boil Aunt Lydia for another hour and try again. I do like the precision possible with the individual theads.. And the vape is smoooooth.. Just that underlying taste that keeps putting me off after an hour of vaping....

Ceramic wicks are an entirely different thing than fibre glass... But the manufacturing process should be kinda same tleast & the risks associated with fiber wick's are still there. They are used in pyro stuff same as Fiber glass wicks. Well as far as sterile stuff goes, if you are in doubt and don't wanna take chances, just dump wateva you want to make sterile in a small SS vessel (immersed in boiling water prior to this to make sterile) and use a double boiler or close this vessel and make it float on the boilin water for atleast 15 mins (entire apparatus must be closed)... I wont recommend a pressure cooker coz mite go Kaboom!(with an enclosed vessel with a lesser pressure in it hehe) The idea is actually to steam it for 15 mins but anything will do. This is kinda the process used in hospital's to sterile gauze and cotton etc... They use an Auto Clave i think...

Lot of info here!
Can you please help me by posting some links to where I can find both silica and bambo wick in bulk? Not from an ecig vendor please.
I need 1mm and 3mm in silica.
Thanks again.

Bamboo wicks ehh...?? There are quite a lot of bamboo's behind ma house.. Its coz when there is a river behind ya, bamboo's can hold soil better than walls when its the rainy season :).. Maybe i can make wicks from them!!!!

Someone actually did this (somewhere earlier in this thread) Gawd, don't ask me where but I recall it vaped okay, but was very hard to assemble the wick. That guy used straight bamboo shavings. rofl!

I'm confused about thread color.

I found bamboo in white and natural. Is natural actually the natural color or a dye? Also, I found cotton in white and ecru. Is ecru the natural color?

I'm replying to my own question because I got an answer from one yarn company. I e-mail the customer support of three companies but I've only heard from one. I'll post any other replies I get as soon as I get them.

This is from Peaches and Cream. I picked up a roll of their 100% cotton yarn from Wal-Mart. They said:

"Thank you for your interest in Peaches and Crème cotton yarn.

Our Ecru #01006 is not dyed. It is the closest to the true (natural) colour of cotton.

May you have a wonderfully creative day!"

I hope this helps someone.

Damn. This just gets worse and worse. Not only have I been part of the ECF's sewing circle, now I know what color Ecru is. Hell, I thought Ecru was some kind of flightless bird. Pretty soon I'll be watching Martha Stewart and making doilies and......

So I guess this means white is dyed.:facepalm: I always figured that raw cotton out in a field was white but then I've never seen raw cotton in a field.

White cotton yarn in bleached, using a variety of chemicals, ALL of which leave toxic residues of varying degrees of toxicity. Natural cotton is actually sort of REALLY pale yellow-tan.

The ONLY plant fiber that is naturally snow-white without chemical bleaching is hemp, but that is illegal to grow in the US.

It's not easy to find as a raw fiber, or in yarn or thread form, but it IS gaining popularity. Most of the hemp yarn or thread you find in the US is from China, but some of the high-grade stuff comes from Canada or Romania.

If you could find natural, unbleached, 100% organic undyed hemp yarn, that would probably be MUCH better than cotton--it has a higher flash point, is about 20 times as strong and abrasion-resistant, and it stands up to getting wet MUCH better than cotton or linen.

Oh, yeah and one more thing about cotton--almost ALL cotton grown in the US is Genetically Modified. Non-GMO cotton is nearly extinct in the US these days, and it's isappearing fast in most of th erest of the cotton-growing world too, thanks to Monsanto's agenda to patent the entire genome of the planet, and poison us all with their evil, toxic franken-plants...

I may try this myself. Hemp wicks might just be the "holy grail" for vaping! We won't know until someone tries it..
