You might try dropping it to 6.5 or even 6.0 watts just to see if it makes them last longer.

I might, but man... it should last at 7. If anything I figured keeping it at 7 was keeping it in easy mode. Unless I'm just totally incorrect with my perception of what's considered low vs high wattage...?

7 watts isn't really high per say, but it is getting to the high side of the theoretical "Just Right" range. It could just be that it's high for cotton wicks. /shrug it's all just experimentation really.

Maybe this will help:

I did an experiment with a Kanger coil last night. Using 5mm Ekowool and 28AWG A1. I will post pics tonight if it holds strong through the day. So far, its kicking ...., and producing more flavor and vape than the previous micros.

More to come.....

Posting thread on how to. Its performing incredibly so far.

I can't help it, but I keep looking back at silica... Now that another day has passed, the performance of cotton is beginning to degrade quite a bit. Meanwhile I put a head back in that had about 3 days of chain vaping on it with a silica wick and it continued working just fine. I can't see any vapor difference between silica and cotton, and silica can dry burn, and silica seems to last longer, and silica is still pretty cheap, and uh... yeah.

I'll keep experimenting though. That's the name of the game, after all.

Silica is pretty good and I agree on the dry burning bit. Some people have raised concerns (not sure if I believe them or not) about silica fibers getting stuck in your lungs and throat. Apparently it has tiny fiberglass shard like fibers that can break loose. Depending on the size they may be OK or they may pose a risk.

As long as the silica is wet I can't see fibers breaking loose, that's just my :2c:

Funny you bring that up about silica, because the vast majority of my "are these wicks even safe?" reading was questioning cotton and inhaling cotton ash etc. I guess we vapers can't really win, eh?

I've been using cotton wicks for well over a year now. The ONLY time I burned a wick was when I was using a rebuildable dripping atty (I'm not a regular dripper :D). You will know when this happens, trust me   This is why I've never read any of those threads.

Well, I brewed up some more cotton wicks. Silica started to give a slight burnt hue that would not leave, even after a dry burn. What's funny is I seem to recall this taste from the stock heads and I never could shake it, but stock heads are also silica, so clearly going to cotton helped out with this particular thing. At any rate, the silica also likes to break and fray apart incredibly easily when you try to thread it into the coil, whereas cotton you can compress and form a point and *bloop* there it is, give it another twist while giving it a slight tug and it's set, trim, done. I think we'll be hanging out with cotton for a bit.

ScottP, great tutorial and pics earlier in the thread! I have been all over and no local WalMart has P&C yarn in stock in Ecru. Went to JoaAnne's and found "Sugar & Cream" 100% cotton yarn that looked undyed but was not organic. Then they had Lion's brand organic cotton yarn, but it was dyed Almond colored! Can't win!

Tried cotton balls couple weeks back and didn't like it at all. Tasted like the stream that comes off the iron when steaming a cotton shirt. :D

However, I'm curious why you have not tried nor mentioned ceramic wicks. They are supposed to last forever unless you break them. When they get gunky, they dry-burn clean, and some people claim they taste better the longer you use them. Am referring to this thread: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/modding-forum/362182-next-big-thing-porous-ceramic-wicks.html Since I'm new to all this and can't even find organic, undyed yarn at this point, I was thinking ceramic wicks would be my next venture... maybe they'll be easier to find! Have you tried these? ...Anyone else?

EDIT: Never mind! I know why only a few people have tried them... they aren't available yet!

The only ones I have seen will not fit in these kinds of heads. If someone finds one I will definitely try it.

I picked up 5 ceramic wicks from a co-op a while ago; but haven't done anything with them. Maybe when/if I ever get my Scuba-Gen Mini, I'll give them a shot.

I think BJ43 used a ceramic wick in a Vivi Nova, with hemp or bamboo to wick the juice up to the ceramic.

With the bcc's it might be possible to 'shape' a ceramic wick to fit; most likely someone has already done this :D

I've used a SS mesh wick w/ cotton 'tails' at each end in top-coil rebuildables.

Yeah, wondered about that as I saw a YTube vid and the ceramic wick was standing up inside the tank, and sticking out the top... then just did a search again and discovered there is such a thing as a 'ceramic wick atomizer'... (nothing new to you veterans but I had no idea).

So basically what all this means is .... more money. :D
