I'm new to rebuildables, so please excuse my naivety. What determines the resistance of a coil? Is it the metal wire you wrap around the wick or the wick material or a combination of both? Maybe number of coils? I'm looking for a 1.5-1.8ohm "something", but since I'm a total newb I've got no idea. Any tips?

Resistance is determined by the wire you use to wrap the coil. Different gauge wire has different resistance ratings per inch, and depending on which size wire you use, and how many wraps you do in a coil (length of wire), that effects the total resistance of a coil.

You can do a little math to figure this out ahead of time to get a ballpark estimate, but the only way to be sure about the TRUE resistance of coil is to measure it with an ohm meter after you've got it built...

Someone on this forum already published a chart for the 3 common types of Kanthal and the two common types of nichrome, and you can use that to figure out how much of each type fo wire you need to use to achieve a specific resistance on a coil. Click the link below to see it.

Thanks for the help! This answers everything. Looks like I'll be ordering some Kanthal and a multimeter in my next purchase.
