In a van ............down by the river
Anyway...there has been some great advice in this thread.

People who advocate free shipping most likely don't own a business.

The most important thing is to listen to your customer base.

Edit: These five posts in row were my way of making a point.
If it upsets anyone, that was not my intention.

Now...if I win, then we can talk.

ok I am gonna add my 2 cents on the shipping cost. I get many businesses can not afford to do free shipping, so I don't mind paying a reasonable amount for shipping costs. But this flat rate crap while great for bigger orders is really stupid for small orders.

Example the other day I went to order some new o-rings, I only needed 2 and the place I HAD been going to buy from will sell just 2 if I want, but why on earth would I pay $5 shipping on $0.30 worth of o-rings? Needless to say I didn't order them.

Agreed, free shipping on large orders, not just blanket free shipping. I was about to order 2 $3 adapters from a site, would've been $3 for standard 1st class, but if I spent $44 dollars more it would be free priority shipping. I ended up spending $80 total. So definately give free shipping on larger orders to take advantage of people like me :D

Yea shipping options are nice to have. One place out of NY offers priority while my main vendor out of IL doesn't. I can usually get the stuff quicker from NY than IL which is only about 4 hours away driving.

So yes, flexible shipping options are a great thing to have. I don't mind paying a fez extra $$ if I need something quicker and standard snail mail can be inconsistent.

Flat rate shipping for a large order, free shipping when the order is over $40 or $50 sounds good to me.

NancyR...so true...a few "o" rings would only cost a postage stamp on an envelope!!

The problem with that is that most people are all caught up in delivery confirmation and you can not get DC on a stamped envelope.

while this is true and for a lot of things I want the dc, for things like o-rings I could care less about dc, so give us the option of having that

Yeah, I can see that as an option. Personally I would prefer the same thing. But I don't know that I would feel comfortable as a seller. Too many would expect to be reimbursed should they not get their order. Then again, they (not all) expect to be reimbursed if there is delivery confirmation and something happens so I really don't know. lol

And many would claim they didn't get it in an attempt to get refunds or extra freebies.

I don't know about many but I would most certainly say some. Enough to make it hard on sellers. I think DC is one of the biggest scams out there (and not blaming the PO here) but it protects the sellers to an extent. As far as a consumer, it would not take long for a vendor to be found out if people started complaining about not receiving their items so it would be pretty stupid to cheat people if they have a desire to stay in business.

I don't know. I view it from both sides unfortunately. As someone without much money, I would love to be able to pay less than a dollar for a few small items I need. Like o-rings. And if it got lost and there weren't other complaints, I would believe the vendor if they said they sent it. But as a vendor, DC would give me a little protection.
