People are funny. I learned long ago (psych 101) NEVER to give unasked-for advice.
I also learned long ago that people will SAY they want to change or eliminate a habit (smoking, drinking, lack of exercise, overeating, etc.) but they really don't. While it can be interesting to speculate WHY people say something they don't really mean, uh, it's a time-waster.
With ME, on the other hand, it was a total stranger who introduced me to e-cigs and he ABSOLUTELY was giving me "unasked-for" advice. But in a fun way!
I'd stepped outside of a club to have a cig (analog), joined by the doorman. Some other guys who knew him stopped to chat on their way to another club in the next block.
When I pulled out a pack of smokes, one of the guys said, "Wait! Don't do that -- try this!" He handed me an e-cig out of his extremely cool-looking black PCC from V4L.
I'm all about looking extremely cool. He told me to press the little button and take a long slow draw. I did, got great vapor and started choking. It tasted great, though! And I couldn't believe the "smoke."
We all stood around talking about e-cigs (I'd heard about them but just figured they were another stop-smoking gimmick) for 20 minutes. He told me about the other brands he'd tried. Recommended this one.
I found myself saying to him, "Interesting. I came out her for a smoke. Like I do about every 40 minutes every night I'm in this club. I've had one hit of that e-cig and I don't WANT a cigarette. This is after 20 minutes! That's amazing."
So I went home, read about them, found ECF, ordered my kit, and that's been it ever since.
I really had NO plans to stop smoking. I just thought I'd try e-cigs for the heck of it.
I'm still amazed I INSTANTLY stopped smoking and haven't had any urge to light even one analog.
Then again, I'm open to new ideas, new information, experimentation, etc. PLUS -- this stranger wasn't "telling" me I needed to quit smoking and switch to e-cigs. He was just excited about what he'd found, and wanted to share it.
That's the tack I've taken. I haul out an e-cig in a situation -- I'M excited about 'em, the smokers and non-smokers around me are excited about 'em, I tell 'em about 'em, give 'em this site and the one where I bought my kit -- and that's that.
The owner of the club I mentioned happens to be a cardiologist. He comes in maybe once a night for a glass of wine and to see how everything's going. He's got a great staff to run things (all young smokers). He quit smoking 15 years ago. He's fascinated with my e-cigs. I showed him what I knew about them, told him about my immediate success.
He knows me. Knows what a heavy smoker I've been. I recommended e-cigs to any of his patients who hadn't been able to quit smoking despite heart troubles and even surgery.
Oh, yeah. I'm sitting at the bar beside him, vaping away, talking about carts and atomizers and liquids and nicotine strengths and the FDA. He doesn't mind a bit -- and it's a non-smoking club. He's as intrigued by e-cigs as I am.
I've only been vaping for 3 weeks (including in that club; department stores, grocery stores, etc.). The club's staff have all gotten more and more curious, since they can see I'm not stepping outside every 40 minutes, regardless of weather, to smoke yet another analog. They can see I'm not lying about these things, in other words.
So, I hope they'll join the club. But I can't make them. All I can do is let them see how much I'm enjoying vaping, answering their questions, telling them about the $aving$, and they'll make their first order or not.
Just my two cents.
