So, I used to make hemp necklaces back in the day, and I just randomly thought I'd give the Sliding Square Knot a try (a little while ago) with un-torched 28g Kanthal. I know the photo is ugly, untidy, and unfinished (one of the three strands broke as you can see), but I thought I'd give a peek into what I'll be working on. I'm thinking of going 30g and torching the wire to be able to get the square knots tidy (so you can't see the center strand). Maybe use a 28g center strand? At any rate, feel free to give it a try, as I have in no way perfected getting it to do what I want it to do yet. It's a project though; that inch of work took about 15-20 min. Will post again if/when I can get a good final product. I'm hoping 4 wraps will give it some good surface area and wicking. Here's what I'm hoping the knotting will look like before coiling:

Wish me luck!

You really should straighten the kanthal as well, it'll make it easier.

The 30g might be a little too thin to secure into your drill chuck, so just fold the end over to make it thicker. Secure it in the drill chuck and hold the other end with needle nose pliers and take the slack out, with tension run the drill for a few seconds and it'll be perfectly straight with no spring to it.

Butane coated kanthal isn't my bag :)

Thanks for the tip!

As for an update, I just made the jig today (2 screws in a block of wood; I somehow found time in the day to make that!). I've been putting my free time toward re-roofing my parents' 250 y/o house, but I'm hoping to dive into the build today. Will post a small tutorial as well; that is, if I've found everything to turn out well enough to deserve one.

Cheers!

Butane is an extremely volatile solvent with a very low boiling point. There is absolutely none on your wire after torching. And if there were, you'd know it by the fire that started as soon as you put heat to it. Don't go fear-mongering. We already have enough of that.

Sorry, forgot to post the performance info. She fires at around .4 ohms, and the flavor/vapor were great. The center strand seems to ramp up a little quicker than the knotting, while the knots themselves do a great job wicking up the juice just before it gets vaporized. Vapor production was good, but I'm more concerned with flavor. Consider this a V1. Going to try with thinner gauge wire for the knots, and keeping the center strand at 28 or maybe 26ga. I'll also see if a thinner wrap gauge might make this a little friendlier for smaller RDA's. Thanks for the compliments.
