Worst marketing idea ever - calling them "e cigs"

... electronic cigarette is not invented in US and for US, therefore the name is best that could be for all languages.
vaping is slang and you can't translate it. PV sounds stupid and irrelevant in 5 languages I know.
Naming it e-cig was best marketing idea. Imagine electronic cigarette device that is called fume-machine in other languages... would you buy that or had even slightest idea of trying it in place of smoking? 0.o

I, as a smoker, was aware that e-cig existed. I, as a smoker, had no idea and never heard about APV/mod.

@ DiNet - if it is about marketing, you could call it a "lung steam cleaner" or as previously mentioned an "anit-cig" if you wanted, but if it has features you would like to purchase, you'll find it and buy it. for me, it was nicotine and inhalation I was after, could have cared less what it is called. The name cigarette has been so saturated in negative light, you get all the bad things inherent in that name, even though the only two common things are nicotine and the oral delivery of that nicotine. they have less in common than they do IN common. as a result, the whole industry and every user is in a constant state of playing defense, all the while this positive thing is being challenged, simply based on a name. Also, calling it an e cig all but eliminates anyone that doesn't wan to "smoke" from it's market. what non smoker would buy something called an e cig? why would they? they don't want a cigarette, or to smoke. Many people have been eliminated as possible consumers. unless you only want to sell to "smokers".

In a recent TV commercial for Blu I recall the guy referring to his "blu" as smoking. I really think we will have a battle with the perception of vaping. The propaganda filtered by these companies seem to reinforce that vaping is "smoking".

If you are after nicotine and only nicotine you would be most pleased with nicotine patches and/or gums... this product is to replace cigarette for smokers. It is targeted at smoker and marketed to smokers.
It wouldn't caught anyone attention or even survive if it was called by some random nonsense name.


P.S. It's still smoking, not vaping. There's no such word as vaping outside our slang... hmm, actually English language slang only...
btw, straight "translation" of this word to Russian will be more like "Steam/Stew"... or in slang b.s. you...

I agree with the comments that it is indeed a catch 22...While it is true that not as many people would know about it if it was called something different; I think with an invention this great word would have gotten around eventually, and if it had been called something different from the start, then the gov probably wouldn't be all up in our face right now. At the same token, if user base didn't explode like it has been, then product development would not have been as diverse. Diverse product wont mean squat though, if it all gets chucked down the drain because of legislation banning nic juice and limiting us to devices made pre-2007. Then the vapors market will practically implode and collapse to new users...and it will just be back to its roots of DIY's modding what they can.

I generally don't mind the term 'e-cig', although I prefer calling it a PV or an APV. However, what I dislike is calling cigarettes analogs...it just rubs me the wrong way.

However, I gave my stepdaughter an eGo-C Twist and she's been calling it her 'un-cig' and I kinda like that for a general term.

I agree with anything that has to do with vapor instead of cigs. I get a much better reaction if I say it is a PV instead of E-Cig
But than again the whole reason many of us switched was that the name had cigarette in it. I would imagine that is why this forum is still under the e-cig name. Many would not be able find it or know how to look for it if they were first considering making the switch if it had vapor instead.

EXACTLY ! ! ! - But in due time, I feel like awareness will become common, just as regular cigarettes were slowly known to cause cancer to the general public over 50 years ago, I feel like E-cigs, or whatever name we can give this as an alternative to tradition tobacco will become common public knowledge. People used to drink and drive in the 70's and when they did that they used to just give driving iolation tickets. As peoples lives were taken/affected, the laws , knowledge and understanding of the consequences of driving while wasted became common knowledge so the laws had to change. Now it's a felony in most states in the USA. this will all take time for the general public to accept the use of and knowledge of E-cigs. ... and bottles and bottles of Killa Vanilla !!!

You just said all my thoughts on this matter. I gave up smoking not much time ago by swtiching to e-cigs. I doubt i would do that if that was called somehow else. For example "Nicotine ice-cream" sounds just not the good way to attract people switch from smoking.

I really do feel that most cigarette users can identify with e-cigarette. I know when I first started I would have had no clue. However, the blu guy commercial does fascinate me when he talks about smoking his "blu". However, I forgive him because he is so darn handsome.
