I was willing to assume the risks of smoking cigarettes; I am willing to assume the risks (which IMHO are MUCH LESS SUBSTANTIAL) of vaping cupcakes, custards, WHATEVERS.
The air we breathe is HARMFUL (just look at Beijing) I will die someday. Maybe sooner than "anticipated". However, my lungs are clearer now than they have been in almost 30 years.

Different batteries work better for different applications than others.

Replacement of buttery/custardy tones with diacetyl-free variants was being worked by DIYers and eliquid suppliers back in 2010/2011.
Multiple suppliers officially came out with diacetyl-free formulations. Kudos to them
Some suppliers dropped eliquids, because they weren't content with the substitutes they could find for a particular mix. Kudos to them
Some suppliers supposedly stuck their heads in the sand, kept on using some flavors with the not-so-good flavorings. I have no idea if that still holds true in 2015 -- I've been strictly DIY for years.
It is always fair for a vaper to ask an eliquid supplier if they use any flavors with diacetyl or diketones (the broader category of iffy chemicals). If a supplier says they don't know, and won't check, I personally wouldn't use them. If they said a given eliquid does have them, I'd shy away from it unless it is something I vape very sparingly (again, personal choice).
Five Pawns has been the lucky recent recipient of a $5M class action lawsuit filed by vapers who asked them specifically, and were told specifically BY Five Pawns, that their juices did NOT contain Diketones. Testing by one of their British vendors, Cloud 9, a company I have done business with and found VERY reputable, showed UNHEARD of levels of AP and DA in their juices. Five pawns then SUED them to Cease and Desist from publishing those results, and came out with their OWN much older results, which they denied to Cloud 9 having, showing lower but still ridiculously high quantities of the offending chemicals. Suicide Bunny had PREVIOUSLY been caught with a similar hand in the cookie jar.
And yep, I started to DIY in 2012 when I first started vaping. Concerns about what were in the flavorings were a major factor in QUITTING the practice, as I had identified a commercial juice maker that avoids them completely, and was reasonably priced. So it is an issue that the industry HAS been aware of, for a very long time.

None of my devices are mechs but that's next on my list of must haves (for the vapocalypse!) right after the nicotine is secured.
