Printrbot Jr.

But I just pledged $550 for the Kossel Clear on Kickstarter. Take a look.

thanks! that Kossel looks pretty sweet, but i'd never be able to assemble it. the $1k fully assembled version exceeds my "try-it hobby" budget, and waiting several months would seriously challenge my OCD.

the assembled Printrbot Simple is pretty tempting, tho.

unloaded:

I just uploaded the model to shapeways here: https://www.shapeways.com/model/1267298/reo-grand-button-cover.html

You can order it in anything from white plastic for $2.70 to high polish Sterling Silver for $70. Stainless and gold plated brass also available.

Keep in mind, you may need to file or shim the center hole to fit your particular button.

And just for you I made this other one that may only be printed in gold or silver, and must be taken to a jeweler to get some diamonds mounted:
https://www.shapeways.com/model/1282078/jewel-button.html

Way to go for some serious button bling! :thumb:

Before you get the simple take a look at the forums. It requires a lot of tinkering and calibration to get it right. Like the early day of mods.

Be prepared to test dozens of high test fishing lines, glues, sandpapers, etc...

sigh... guess i'll stick with my existing hobby for a while-- more Woodvils :)

I was checking out the types of materials on the buttons by salamastre, and those bronze ones would probably really look sharp on a copper wrinkle! Especially if it had a bronze reomizer on it. *swoon*

I am starting to think that putting them up for sale may be a little bit irresponsible. I have no way of telling that the model printer by shapeways will fit your button without further modification. I just have the samples I printed myself and what my calipers say.

If yo do buy one, get the plastic one and let me know how it works.

I might actually kill for one of those!

Can you do a bronze, Salamastre? If so, there ain't no way you're getting just postage...seriously.

(ignore my idle threat...)

I can only print cheap plastic like the picture I posted.

Shapeways is a third party website. They have state of the art printers. Anyone can upload a model and offer it for sale. If you go to Shapeways and order one of my models, I get a small commission, but they do all the printing.

As I said above, I do not know for a fact that the button will fit if you print it in brass or stainless or any other of the materials at Shapeways. I uploaded a model with the correct dimensions that would fit my button if printer perfectly.

If you really want the brass one you could order the plastic one and see if it fits, then order the brass one. I am willing to modifiy the model if you ask me too, to make the hole larger or smaller or deeper.

If I was doing it for myself, I would just make an extra large hole and cement it onto the Reo's button.

perhaps not, depending on how you go about it... i bought a bunch of Kickstands from the Ponoko site so i could offer fellow Reonauts one that wouldn't include the crazy shipping cost.

No worries.:)

I'm thinking I'm going to shoot for an actual brass button. Pdib's got me to thinking...I might actually find some everyday object that would fit the bill. I love to personalize my stuff...that's half the fun. That and building micro-coils.

But I really appreciate the offer.:thumb:

Pdib - your son's bike has gone cos you drilled the lock off it! ;)

Reminds me of a tale at uni when i was a young Trunky trying to sell a bike, cos i had a motorbike. "For Sale - $20" - nope.
For Sale $15" - nope. "Free bike!" -nope.

Unlocked it, was gone the next morning!

T

Well that ain't the half of it! Now some bloke has gone and taken the button too! :p

Well, you're not quite kidding there. 3-5 years down the line when we can 3D print in metal, what happens then? We'll be able to print Reos........

Given the crappy legal state of IP (intellectual property), what happens to people like Rob who designs something unique, that anyonw can download in a dxf or stl (or similar) file?

Forget about the astronomical costs of obtaining patents from the PTO's around the world--even if you have them, who's going to police it?

And we're getting closer real fast--look at the NASA story that was in the press recently...

I'm not knocking the technology -- I'm looking forward to be able to print my own stuff, but all those who manufacture unique items are going to be victims if this isn't sorted out. How? I have no idea.

This is a paradigm-shift freight train that we've been looking at for years, and now it's very, very close.

The most irritating thing is that the majority of the debate has been sidelined by the printing of plastic guns. So instead of an enlightened (and commercial) examination of how to deal with this, it has become a gun-issue. The PTO situation was screwed up before. 3D printing is just going to show how truly useless it really is, but lawmakers (everywhere) are going to keep their heads in the sand until disaster has struck.

Maybe not so much on a large scale, but have you googled "additive manufacturing" lately? We're there my friend.

Sent care of the guys that made Star Trek low tech.

FYI if any you peeps have not had previous experience with delrin/acetal........this type of "plastic" is not easy to glue. It normally requires specialized adhesives. That actually may be beneficial cause if you do glue some type of button cover on it permanently you'll have a hard time having to replace the button if you evet melt it. No more button covers for me, I stick with my stock modded "designers" buttons mine.
