Well, you're not quite kidding there. 3-5 years down the line when we can 3D print in metal, what happens then? We'll be able to print Reos........
Given the crappy legal state of IP (intellectual property), what happens to people like Rob who designs something unique, that anyonw can download in a dxf or stl (or similar) file?
Forget about the astronomical costs of obtaining patents from the PTO's around the world--even if you have them, who's going to police it?
And we're getting closer real fast--look at the
NASA story that was in the press recently...
I'm not knocking the technology -- I'm looking forward to be able to print my own stuff, but all those who manufacture unique items are going to be victims if this isn't sorted out. How? I have no idea.
This is a paradigm-shift freight train that we've been looking at for years, and now it's very, very close.
The most irritating thing is that the majority of the debate has been sidelined by the printing of plastic guns. So instead of an enlightened (and commercial) examination of how to deal with this, it has become a gun-issue. The PTO situation was screwed up before. 3D printing is just going to show how truly useless it really is, but lawmakers (everywhere) are going to keep their heads in the sand until disaster has struck.
