Greetings to the DIY forum. Allow me to introduce myself. I smoked for over 25 years. I tried e-cigs a couple years ago and did not like what I tasted and tried. I looked into the scene again in July and discovered that there are much better systems than Blu type devices...... :glare:

Whether right, wrong or indifferent, after researching the products that were out there, I chose to embrace the Halo community and purchased a Triton starter kit and bought various Halo tobacco flavors. -Well..... IT WORKED! I have not had a SINGLE cigarette since. NOT ONE. Five months of being smoke free. Amazing! Thanks to Halo, I am SO over smoking. The people over in the Halo forum are SO helpful and friendly. I cannot thank them enough for pointing me in the right direction with some sound advice.....
:toast:

I just have a big problem with the obscene prices of their liquids. They taste fantastic, BUT.... It was actually less expensive to roll my own cigarettes than it is to vape Halo liquids. I REFUSE to go back to smoking so the logical thing to do is DIY my juices. I have been dropping pure NicQuid menthol drops into my Torque 56 and it totally reminds me of what I used to smoke- A full flavor menthol cigarette that I made with menthol tubes and menthol tobacco. I like the Tribeca and the Prime 15 too with the menthol.

I did some exhaustive reading in this DIY forum, especially an EPIC adventure regarding Totally Wicked Halo clones. That took hours and I picked up on many, MANY acronyms used by you mad mixers. It was extremely frustrating to learn what all of your acronyms and shorthand mean. High five to Danny, Schizm, Cyrus and many others that took me on this adventure of intrigue, frustration, promise, success, and countless hours of experimentation. :)

So I am stoked to get into DIY liquid mixing. I am a tinkerer at heart so this is right up my alley. This is my checklist. For starters, I am looking to make nothing but menthol tobacco flavor for my ADV. nothing too crazy. I realize that everyone's taste is subjective but I want to have enough options to be able to come up with something I can enjoy on the first shipment of stuff:

RTS Vapes: 60mg PG nic, pure PG & pure VG...... I will be mixing at perhaps 75/25 PG to VG @ 15 to 18 mg/ml nic.

50 mm funnel, 10ml cylinder, 1cc, 3cc, 5cc syringes, various size glass bottles and small sample sizes

Cocoa flavor, Bitter Wizard, Vape Wizard, & NicQuid Menthol Burst liquid

Hangsen tobacco essence flavors: Arabic, RY1, RY4, RY4 Double, T5, Highway, Elder Captain, 555

Perfumers Apprentice: Acetyl Pyrazine, Trimethyl Pyrazine, Tetramethyl Pyrazine, Methylbutyraldyhyde

I suppose some of the simpler Halo clones would be all I need for an ADV. But it does not even need to that elegant. The best thing I have ever vaped is my Halo Torque 56 with the menthol drops. It has that dirty, ashy tobacco taste that seems authentic to me. THIS is my goal for an ADV- a vape version of a full flavor menthol cig, not some fruity Voodoo thing {which IS good!}
I have never vaped any other vendor's juices as I heard good stuff regarding Halo. Their juice tastes great.

Do you pros see anything that I am missing to get started in the fun? Any objections to Hangsen? Their tobacco flavors seem pricier than most. Is it worth it? Are my flavor choices good for some variety?

Do most make a larger unflavored nic/pg/vg base to start with, then play with, say, a 5 ml sample of this premixed base to add to?

Sorry for so many question and for being so wordy. After new years, I will be ordering. HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!! :) -Johnny

First off welcome to the DIY forum. When handling the Nic, I would suggest you use gloves and eye protection, Nic in the eye is no fun. Basically read the stickies at the top of this page.

I make a simple Halo Tribeca Clone that uses TFA/TPA RY4 double at between 8-10% and 1 to 2 drops of AP per 5ml. Sometime I kick it up a notch by adding 2-4% each of Bavarian Cream and Caramel (All TPA/TFA flavors)

I see your from Waterford - I'm originally from Dearborn - good to have you aboard. :toast:

Cheers,
Steve

Ah another halo vaper. Well I think I can help you with a prime 15 type vape. I started with prime and loved it.

Here's a nice prime type recipe.

Hangsen arabic 7%

30 ml Arabic Tobacco Flavor (HS)

AP 2%

Perfumers Apprentice - Acetyl Pyrazine 5% (PG)

And for that cooling effect on the inhale without the menthol taste (Just adds a coolness without masking the tobacco taste)

koolata 3%

Perfumers Apprentice - Koolada 10% PG

Or if you prefer the traditional cooling menthol taste

Menthol 1% to start and work your way up

Perfumers Apprentice - Menthol Liquid (PG)

You will need to steep this for a week to 10 days. If you like halo prime you will not be disappointed with this.....Enjoy

Another word of advice is if your going to try to clone halo don't look for perfection because you will never duplicate it. You will come close but never duplicate it. So don't fall into that trap it only leads to fustration. I strongly suggest you stick with the hangsen tobaccos. There easy to get right the first time, taste great and require far less steeping. I see you've already picked several hangsen tobaccos so that's a big step in the right direction. I would just recommend if your looking for an ashey tobacco add hangsen USA red to that list.

Also may I suggest a little light reading

Read my blogs before getting started

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/blogs/dannyv45/

then read hoosier's blogs.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/blogs/hoosier/

then read the stickies at the top of the page.

this will explain a lot of the how's and why's.

Danny, I could feel the frustration when those Totally Wicked flavors were taken away. It is sadder for those who experienced it than those that never tasted it but I feel ya! As long as we can get close, that will work for me. I already read all of your blogs and I am trying to learn from the experts such as yourself. ..............I am looking forward to this!!! :)

I plan on adjusting my ideal nic level by FEEL and get to where I am comfortable with the level. For me, 18 is a touch too high sometimes and 12 is not enough. Now that the holiday is over, I placed an initial order to two vendors- RTS and TPA/TFA with all the base ingredients, lab/safety equipment, and many different tobaccos/flavorings/additives. Can't wait for my vapemail. I will pick up my ultrasonic locally.

I have a very basic question: For my first batch of DIY, I want to make a 30 ml unflavored 75pg/25vg @ 15mg nic base to make some small sample size bottles of various single flavors to steep. Is it correct to first make a nic/pg/vg unflavored base and simply add to that, or do you account for the flavor in the final percentages? For an example, if the tobacco flavoring I will use is PG based, do I account for that when I make the base? I hope this is not a confusing question. :)

You can do it however you like because that's what DIY is all about. I don't make a premade base because sometime I want a 50/50 mix, other times 60/40 and so on. I also mix for a few people other than myself.

I account for the flavoring, if it's in PG then that counts towards PG. The same with the Nic, mine is VG based so it gets counted towards VG. I use the E-Juice Me Up Calculator which I recommend. You can download it free here if your so inclined:

You will need to account for added flavor but making a large batch of premixed base is fine. I make 240ml's of 18mg 50/50 base at a time. Don't get hung up on if I add this much flavor then the nic will be reduced by that much. That can come later. Get used to using the calculator I recommended in my blog. But basically if your going to make lets say 30 ml's of finished mix compensate for the amount of flavor you add. So if you add 3ml of flavor the base should be 27ml's. Follow that rule for now and you will do fine. I suggest starting with 5ml test batches so you don't waste materals. SO if you add lets say 1ml flavor add it to 4ml base (1+4=5). Use the calculator to calculate the percentage of flavor and always start with the lowest recommended percentage. If your going to use my recipe provided earlier then use those percentages and you'll be good.

I totally comprehend. Now I just have to wait for the vapemail. Have not been anxious like this since late July when I got my Halo Triton starter kit with Tribeca for the first time! I have plenty of Torque/menthol and Voodoo to vape until all this arrives. No more ordering from Halo for me. It's been tasty. Too bad it is SO overpriced. :)

Thanks for all the input dealing with chemicals is nothing new to me. Nicotine I know about and I use gloves from handling corals in my Reef tank which have neurotoxins heck to handling chemicals for Pro Paints shooting cars and industrial equipment again gloves and chemical mash needed or fresh oxygen mask...anyhoot tinkering is another trait I see here on this forum from building your own mod's to save money and get a better vape to now making your own e-juice using usda grade agents when handled and formulated correctly could yield the next big hit and all day vape..at least this is not as bad as say those moonshiners i see on tv lol...thanks for the input intel and tips its appreciated.
I see a lot of apps for the designing of vape juice and calculators for formulations ...which apps have you guys used for your diy trials?
