So lookit what I found on Reddit dated July 16, 2014. Looks like a few people have beaten us to the punch, but no reason we can't incorporate that. This guy aligned his zig zag coil along the vertical axis, rather than the horizontal. Not sure how he wicked it.
Someone in that thread said these are called 'ophion coils'

Also found this thread here on ECF dated to last year, so people have been tinkering with this for awhile, I just don't understand why this hasn't taken off as a thing.

Yeah, I tried to be really nice about it earlier, but yeah... this has been done :( Basically any simple shape has been done. Even the micro coil was re-invented time and time again... with some of the later 'inventors' still taking credit despite videos even existing well in advance. We are really just using heating element wire as intended (as a heating element) and generally using the same element shape/designs that have been used for quite some time already, especially with 2D designs. The early pioneers of vaping started off by duplicating all the shapes/designs they could find such as toaster ovens, flash boilers, tank-less water heaters, etc.

I'm thinking that the reason this hasn't taken off is related to the amount of added benefit versus amount of added work... look at things like clapton coils etc. Some of the more exotic wire treatments actually have measurable value, and still aren't taking off that well simply due to the effort involved... why go through the trouble of X if you can get 90% of the benefit from simple twisted wire, etc.

I figure if you can demonstrate enough measurable added value, and provide instructions for an adjustable rig to make the elements, then you could revive this design... or add something to it to make it stand out. If you rolled the shape in the X or the Y, I'm pretty sure I have seen those as well... but I don't think I have seen anyone roll every other loop in opposite directions and wick them... e.g, loop one rolls upward, loop two rolls under, repeat.... or maybe if you made the loops really, really tiny so that it basically turned round wire into something more like aerated ribbon... aerated ribbon... hmm... that's one I think I'll try... anyway, no reason to let something having been done before to prevent you from doing it again and using it as a stepping stone, that's for sure :)

You may even find that something the masses don't like is something you really love!

Dude i love the idea never heard of it, it would be kind of wierd to wick... maybe a flat mound underneath?? If someone tries this build please let me know results!! Got me curious to lol

A few people in this thread have tried it with varying results, also I posted a few links to people trying this build over the past year as well.
The trouble seems to be in ease of build. Without a jig of sorts, this is difficult, so I'm currently trying to contemplate concepts for a jig for these types of builds.

I built this coil awhile ago, similar to what you are describing. I had some round kanthal I bent into a zig-zag shape and then wrapped that to make a coil. Never tried it with ribbon though, keeping the shape would probably be difficult as ribbon wire is pretty flimsy.

Has anyone tried it? I imagine it would work best with ribbon wire. What I'm getting at is something like this:

The bends in the wire create resistance, much like a typical wound coil. However it occurs to me that if someone could pull this off in an rda, it could be a big flavor and vapor kicker due to a flatter and increased surface area.

So, zig zag coils, feasible, and has anyone tried it?

You seem to be mistaken about what causes the resistance in resistance wire.

The resistance of resistance wire depends on the material, (eg kanthal or nichrome, or whatever metal), the diameter of the wire, and the length of the wire.

Finally back after receiving a 10 point infraction. All has been fixed. Now back to the zigzag coil, I tried 3 times to no avail. I think that I just didn't have the right method of coupling l coiling them. It was bad enough to not even take a picture. If someone could suggest a decent way to make a jig I will retry. I have 30g kanthal now so it's a little more springy. Any suggestions will be helpful

Torch the wire to make it less springy. As far as a jig goes, the best thing I've seen is that one with the holes and a lot of little pegs. I'll have to give this build a try.
