Zombies and snow/cold?

So...as I sit here visiting family in Ohio, I'm looking outside at the snow and wondering....

what happens to zombies in snow/cold/winter?

Is there a temperature beyond which they're not very functional? Can you move far enough north that they're hampered by snow? Can you wait for zombies to freeze and shatter them? Does frostbite speed degradation and loss of body parts?

All very good questions and questions I have contemplated myself.

I would think, and this is my opinion only, that the temperature will have little effect on them. They are dead and cold already. Maybe being in the snow would hamper their mobility some, just because it would be hard to drag your feet as the snow gets deeper.

As far as freezing and shattering, well you would have to be in an extremely cold environment to get that cold, and its going to take some time. And if its cold enough to freeze them, its going to be cold enough to freeze you.

As far as frostbite, I cant really say because I am a lifelong southern guy and have never had any dealings with frostbite.

And if some people are thinking go north for the cold plan, what about the opposite plan? Go south where its hot because heat breeds bacteria that breaks down the flesh quicker. And a zombie without flesh is nothing but a moving skeleton and lets be honest, no one believes in moving skeletons except scooby doo. moving skeletons...thats just silly. Anyways...

Much like the military base, prison, and sams club zombie plans, the go north to alaska plan is brought up a lot on survivalist boards. That and the "get a big boat" plan... We might have to make some of these type plans ZPOTW just because so many people are planning to do them.

whew! I'd much rather go south than north. But we have the ability to bundle up, build fires and mitigate the cold. And the stench of faster decomposition might be pretty nasty. All in all I'd prefer tahiti, but if cold won't bother the zombies why does it never snow in zombie movies?

thats a good question...probably because somewhere along the lines, some woman is going to be dressed in a sexy skimpy outfit and it would look funny if it was snowing outside?? thats just a guess though

tsk tsk! IIRC this is in the Zombie Survival Guide! If it's below 32F then the water in their bodies will freeze just like all the other things in your freezer. Mutt is right for the most part with the heat though, unless it's not humid (which Georgia always is). If it's a dry heat and the fly's don't do their part, the zombies will turn more into mummies. The side effect of a dried up zed would be more resistance to cold weather as well as increased durability

You bring up a good point; where would zombies have the best chance at survival? (i.e. Places to Avoid at all Costs)

Like you said, somewhere relatively gun free would be where I would hope to turn into a zombie.

So, really liberal, highly populated, relatively temperate places like... San Franciso. I would stay the hell away from Frisco if you can avoid it. That place could become the nation's zombie capitol. Plus, the fog! Man, you wouldn't be able to see the zombie horde til they were right on top of you during the foggy times of year there!

Sorry, San Fran. You're a good town to visit now but I'm avoiding the hell out of you during the zombie apocalypse.

They can't desiccate too much, or all you have is zombie dust...and if there's any water content at all, freezing temperatures will affect them. As much as I'd like to go tropical- and scantily clad- ya gotta remember that zombies originally were the result of voodoo. Voodoo is more generally associated with hot climates, and i suspect that zombies will do better in the climates where they originated.

You might do better to avoid Miami....even though there are lots of guns there.
