Johnson and Johnson, manufactures Nicorette
Pfizer: manufactures Chantix and Nicotrol
Glaxo Smith Kline manufactures Zyban and Commit Nicotine Lozanges
Novartis: manufactures Habitrol Nicotine Patch
Nice job. :) It's pretty circular, since cessation pharma is also partnered with WHO. They use WHO to get out the first statement of disapproval, then prod congress using the WHO statement as evidence that action is needed.

I just want to give my two cents since I have written, phones, talked to many (a ton actually) Legislators. There are two good types of letters that would really get the point across. The first needs to be a longer, 500 words or less letter stating our cause and purpose, and giving the Legislator the facts.

For the general public, this is where we bombard him. It is very important to write a short and effective letter, the rule of thumb is 200 words or less. Obviously the less the better. The point to this is to reinforce the initial letter, but I have to stress that it must be shorter! The longer the letters the less effective. Legislators do not respond well to tons of long ... emails stating basically the same thing.

To be completely honest, unless there are thousands of names, petition letters are not nearly as effective.

Just my two cents (plus a lot of professional experience).

I contacted both Colorado senators with:

Dear Senator,

My name is Mickey. I work as an addictions counselor at a residential facility through the Mental Health Center of Denver.

I am writing you today due to a concern regarding one of your cohorts in the U.S. Senate: NJ Senator Lautenberg. Recently, Senator Lautenberg contacted the FDA regarding a relatively new product: the "E-cigarette" or personal vaporizer. The personal vaporizer (PV) vaporizes a solution of nicotine and non-toxic propylene glycol for inhalation. Smokers have been using the product to quit smoking cigarettes, which contain as many as 4000 chemicals--60 of which are carcinogenic. My concern is that if the FDA were to make PV's illegal, many smokers who have switched to the significantly healthier alternative would likely revert to smoking cigarettes. While I understand that the health risks relating to PV's have not been studied or verified, I do know that PV's contain no carcinogens.

I know that this is a very hectic time for you, Senator, and I know your campaign deals with a lot right now. Nonetheless, I humbly request that you consider the plight of one Colorado citizen trying to make healthier choices for himself and his family. Please, request that the FDA investigate the safety of e-cigarettes prior to establishing any sort of ban against the product.

Regards,
-Kyle Mickey

Steams is my hero. I love that guy. :D

Both my wife and I have signed the petition. I'll be sending it to everyone I know.

Sorry if I went way off tangent, I've been a little stressed as of late, if you didn't notice. I didn't mean to cause a problem. :)

Kyle, that is a really really good letter, I may steal it and use it as a basis for mine if that's ok. I got so upset before I needed a little cool down time. Honestly anger is based and fear I guess and I'm scared. I kinda feel like a lot of lives including my own depend on this.

Would someone start a new thread for others to sign the petition? The link may be easy to miss being buried in this one. Maybe make it a sticky?

Has someone taken responsibility for collecting the petition 'signatures' and comments and then distributing them appropriately? Apologies if I'm missing this.

I agree that this needs done as well, but only after adequate time for all to sign. Any volunteers?

If america really cares about us then let ecigs be sold as test are going on.

I suggest maybe only letting the highest dose of nic be 24 and just the basisc of the basic of ingrediants in e liquid child proof caps and warning labels on each package. Of coarse i am just adding to the many of the people who have already suggested these things:rolleyes:

I've submitted to Digg the article posted today on thehill.com. I actually like the article a lot because it lists prominent figures on both sides of the argument without regurgitating the anti-vaping propaganda we see too often in the media. I think if we can digg this submission up to the front page and add several pro-vaping comments and links, we can use digg.com to grow our base of supporters and encourage others to do the research and perhaps decide for themselves to try an electronic cigarette.

Digg - Senator wants to snuff out electronic cigarettes

Hey, I prefer to go by Mickey. Anyways, thank you, and please feel free to use that as a template.

I know what you mean about being scared--I just ordered 10 atomizers, 2 batteries, and some carts! I spent over 120 dollars! 8-o

Anyways, I think we need to get the word out there in a big way. Please, post the petition link in other e-cig threads, and let's try to get on-air to argue our case!

Cheers,
-Mickey

I just signed the petition and ended up with quite a long "comment", which I may use to send some letters to government figures. I must say that I was quite proud with what I ended up with and thought I'd share it here, in case anyone wants to copy it, in part or whole.

WARNING : Wall of text incoming!!

"I am new to using the electronic cigarette, but I am very excited about incorporating it into my life. In the long run, I believe that it will improve my health and my potential burden to the healthcare system, when compared to my continued use of tobacco cigarettes as a two pack a day smoker.

Studies in New Zealand have already been conducted, and concluded by Dr. Murray Laugesen, a recognized expert in the field of the effects of cigarette smoking, to be a less harmful alternative than smoking tobacco cigarettes. If the most reasonable course of continuing to allow these devices to be legally purchased by the general public while objective, independant studies are conducted in the US, I am certain that similar conclusions will be made.

The data shows that countries that rely on tax revenue, generated by the sale of tobacco products, to offset the cost of the public healthcare needed to treat the health complications caused by the use of these products, is much worse off than countries that simply have a lower percentage of the population that use these tobacco products. In the United States of America, where the citizens are granted the freedom to choose to smoke tobacco cigarettes, knowing the high probability that health complications will be caused by this use, the electronic cigarette is currently the most likely product that will allow our country to become a closer model of a country that has a lower percentage of the population that smokes tobacco cigarettes.

If it is the general public's well-being that the Federal Government is truly trying to protect, then I believe it to be indisputable that the use of the electronic cigarette should actually be actively promoted by the leadership that the people of this country have chosen to represent us.

I appreciate having another Coloradan in on this! Please contact our senators: U.S. Senate: Senators Home

I am also about to contact my district's house rep. I have not been this politically active since the beginning of the Iraq war! Please, people, spread this like crazy. Get in touch with that old high-school buddy! Print the petition URL and post them on fliers at local smoke shops! Etc. Etc.!

Cheers,
-Mickey

I tend to agree with you. Tons of phone calls and shorter letters are most effective in these cases, so tomorrow we should try to get as many phones calls in as possible. Do you think emails or written letters are more effective? I tend to think written letters and phone calls are the best way to go.
