Well, the only thing that cigarette smoking shares with crack is the chemical reaction to make it more addictive. I'm not saying that smoking nicotine in cigarettes is the same is smoking crack, I am merely comparing the chemical reactions to the natural state of the drugs when additional chemicals are being added.
I am willing to bet my Malty Toffee that cigarette companies knew well enough what the additives did for the most part. These ingredients were passed as okay to use in cigarettes because individually, the FDA classifies them as GRAS (generally recognized as safe). But, for the most part that was talking about ingesting the said ingredients. No studies were done to find out what these chemicals did when they were burned (i.e. in a cigarette) but now that studies are being conducted and people are finding out what they really do, how long can the FDA continue to allow these to be sold? Oh that's right, Phillip Morris apparently is allowing the FDA to 'regulate' their products... that's a conversation for another time.
Sorry, I tend to get a little off track when this discussion comes up. It really itches me in the wrong places. You're right about one thing though, the agenda of those who are supposed to protect us by regulating our products that we use, ingest, inhale, etc are only in it for the $$$. Preservation of human life apparently doesn't buy porches and mansions.
