The state of Virginia was named after Elizabeth I, the "virgin queen" of England.

This was her nickname because she wasn't married. Actually, a lot of the states are named after royalty.

The Carolinas (North and South) are named after King Charles I of England. Maryland was named after Henrietta Maria, the Queen of England and Charles' wife. Louisiana is named after King Louis XIV of France. Georgia was named after King George II. Coincidentally, the namesake of the state of Georgia was the grandfather of the same George III that the colonists (including the Georgians) revolted against in the American Revolution.

With so many states named after kings and queens, it seems kind of strange that Washington is the only state named after a Presiden

To abolish the pagan custom of the “Valentine” lottery in which boys would draw the names of girls and then pay special attention to them during the holiday, Christian leaders urged boys to substitute saint’s names on the tickets. This may have led to the later nineteenth-century habit of calling them Valentines after one of the prominent martyred saints. The move was not very popular and did not last long.

There is a town in Texas called Valentine, but for not for a romantic reason. The first train to arrive there happened to do so on February 14.

I adopted my little buddy Clancy on Valentine's day!

The Slinky was invented by a naval engineer.

In 1943, Richard James "discovered" this toy while creating an anti-vibration device for ship instruments. He accidentally knocked over some springs and was transfixed by how they "slunk" down the shelves. His wife Betty was the one who actually came up with the toy's name though!

Some more fun Slinky facts - Slinkies were among the first toys to make the trip into outer space. During the Vietnam War, soldiers would sometimes throw a Slinky into a tree for use as a makeshift radio antenna! And, since 1945 about 250 million Slinkies have been sold - if these were all stretched end-to-end, they would wrap around the globe 126 times!!

There is a place in the Gulf of Alaska where two oceans meet but do not mix.

This happened because fresh water glaciers melted and flowed to join the ocean water. Because of the difference in the salinity and densities of these two water bodies, a surface tension developed between them that acts like a thin wall which prevents them from mixing. The boundary between the two is outlined by a thin layer of foam.

It’s kind of poetic isn’t it? Two powerful bodies of water, relentlessly standing together, but unable to become one. They’re like the Romeo and Juliet of aquatic bodies. But fear not, hopelessly romantic weirdos, according to scientists this story will get its happy ending; given enough time, the differences between these two bodies will disappear and they will merge together.

While many think that snow is either white or blue, its ‘colors’ range from yellow and orange to green and even purple, but…believe it or not, snow is actually colorless. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, “the complex structure of snow crystals results in countless tiny surfaces from which visible light is efficiently reflected. What little sunlight is absorbed by snow is absorbed uniformly over the wavelengths of visible light thus giving snow its white appearance.”

Cold-tolerant algae are small, photosynthetic organisms which grow on snow and ice in the polar and alpine regions. Different strains of algae can color the snow yellow, red, orange, brown, green. Of course, the snow acquires its color after it has fallen. You may see snow that falls pink, brown, orange or red, if the air is filled with dust, pollutants or sand. Orange snow fell over Siberia in 2007 and Krasnodar (Russia) was covered by pink snow in 2010.

A common symbol of Valentine’s Day is Cupid (“desire”), the Roman god of love. The son of Venus and Mars, he was originally depicted as a young man who would sharpen his arrows on a grindstone whetted with blood from an infant, though now he is commonly presented as a pudgy baby. This transformation occurred during the Victorian era when business owners wanted to promote Valentine’s Day as more suitable for women and children.

Human lungs have taste buds.

These taste receptors are actually quite similar to those found on our tongues, with but a couple of major differences. Lung taste buds are not clustered together and they can only sense bitter flavors. They also do not send any messages to the brain. Some of these bitter flavors are able to dramatically relax lung tissue - this line of research could revolutionize treatment of asthma and other chronic lung diseases in the future!
