808 Heat.

From my past experience, 808's just get hot. Of course I haven't vaped them in a year or so, so I don't know if anything has changed.
808s just run hot. I drip with both the LR and HV versions and these get really hot! I have to really watch it when I use them because they get hot enough to become damaged and pop if I'm not careful. I can't use any type of metal or aluminum drip tips, either.
I find my 808s get hot when the juice level is running low. I find they get hot even before the amount of smoke is lessened. It is actually my cue to top-up the cartomizer with liquid.
If it is happening even when the cartomizer is full, try switching cart in the middle of a chain vaping session, to spread the stress over two cartomizers. It's easy to do and will make your cartos live longer. I have been using my favourite 808 cartomizer for over 4 months now, and I'd even suggest that is is BETTER than the first time I used it.

Yes - that is why many people like the 808. More heat is more hit.
You can use a plastic or delrin drip tip as a mouthpiece (the ones at LiteCigUSA.com generally fit my Vapor4Life cartos. And SmokelessImage sells their own tips - I do not know if normal drip tips fit their Volt cartos or the Bloogplanet cartos but somebody else would know.)
Also - when the battery is fresh off the charger it is 4.2v and will run the carto hotter. When a carto is new it will run hotter vs 4-5 days later after being refilled many times.
If you want something more subtle or immediate than ordering a drip tip, take a carto condom, cut a small circle out of the middle of the round end, and slip it back on the carto.
If you are using blank cartos you can try cooler ones like Boge 3.0 KR808D-1 carto. It is possible the SmokelssImage cartos may run cooler at the top than the Vapor4Life ones or vice versa.

Thanks for the tips everyone! I will probably end up ordering a tip at some point in time, but for now, I will definitely try the quick fix of a carto condom. I saw Dr. Vapor on youtube uses that technique because he doesn't like the metal on his teeth.

In my limited experience the vertical coil 808's get way way hotter than the horizontal coils. I have only used V4L, Volt , V2, and Litecig carts so its a very limited experience .
If you don't care for the heat, you could get a higher ohm. I wouldn't go much over 3.0 though.
