Hiya!!

I've made the switch from smoking to vaping and I've been off cigarettes for a week and a half now. So proud of myself! I know the basics but I'm finding a lot of it confusing. I was really surprised how easy it was to switch and I'm impressed my cravings are being more healthily administered, so to speak. I used to smoke about 15 L&B a day but I'm not saving much money.

I started with a cool fire 4 and a kangertech tank, with 3mg nicotine liquids, 70vg/30pg but I'm having a few issues and concerns.

1) I seem to be going through coils and liquid very quickly (4 coils in a week and 30ml of premium liquid every 3-4 days) - I assume this is because I'm sucking deep and often which is giving me the throat hit but isn't giving the coil enough time to absorb the liquid

2) I'm overdoing it on my 'vape breaks' from work and ruining my coils

3) I've been advised to upgrade to a better setup and I'm willing to invest as my wattage doesn't feel high enough? but I'm not sure what to get as I don't want my liquid consumption to go up.

4) how does the vg/pg impact on the flavour and throat hit? I'm searching for cheaper liquids but I don't want to waste my money on rubbish and ruin all my hard work by losing my groove with what I've found comfortable, but I do crave a thicker, shorter vape, much like toking a cigarette

I've been told not to go above 27.5w on this setup, not sure why. so I guess I need some basic knowledge to my noob questions, maybe some links to some decent cheaper liquids and a better setup which which would give me a more powerful hit

Hi and welcome. The CF4 is not super-high powered gear, but it's enough for most vapers.
You might try going up to 6mg liquid and vaping less often to get the same nicotine. That should cut down your juice consumption. It may not work for you-- I personally think a big part of the smoking addiction is the hand-to-mouth thing, you may need to vape often-- but it might, too.

4 coils a week seems a bit high, but I wouldn't have blinked at 2. Sweet juices and dark colored juices seem to gunk them up quicker.

You were probably advised not to go over 27.5 because it would be too much power for the coil you're using. What coil are you using, BTW?

PG carries the flavor and gives throat hit, VG makes cloud. for more flavor or throat hit, more PG, for less but more cloud, more VG.

Finally, consider getting into RBAs and building your own coils, as well as DIYing your juice. Both have a learning curve, but they're not hard to do once you learn how, and they are lots cheaper. I rewicked one of my RTAs today; the coil and wick had been in over a month and gone through at least 200ml of juice. They were still vaping fine, but the gunk was discoloring the juice in the tank, so I swapped it. It was-- literally-- the worst I had ever seen one once I got it open but, I was astonished to discover, the wires (that tank had SS316 wire) burnt completely clean and I was able to reuse the coils, just pull in some new wicks.

I'm a little confused when you say you go through coils quick what is the issue with the coil. Does it gurgle? Are you not getting any vapor? Also as far as vg/pg goes the simple answer is pg is for your flavour and vg gives you those big plumes (clouds). I think pg would effect throat hit more but I think the main ingredient for throat hit is nicotine. I use to go through coils quite quick but now they seem to last forever. I have no problem vaping on the same coil for a month but sometimes I too make mistakes and go through them quicker.

Hello and welcome to the forum @Xzeitan. Glad to have you here!:)

As others have said, up you nicotine level and you may not vape as much. That will also help with throat hit. You could also consider 50Pg/50Vg juice as Pg also give more throat hit. If you are using subΩ coils, consider trying a higher resistance coil.

You might also consider some of these juice vendors.
Nicotine

A "general guideline" for nicotine concentration in e-liquid to the number of cigarettes smoked per day. If you are subohming (resistance under 1.0Ω) cut these nicotine levels by at least 50%.

06 mg = 10 cigarettes or less
12 mg = 20 cigarettes
18 mg = 30 cigarettes
24 mg = 40 cigarettes

eLiquid/Juice

PG = Propylene Glycol - the "flavor carrier" of e-liquid. A secondary source of "throat hit", but not as strong as the nicotine concentration. Some people have a sensitivity or even an allergy to PG. It's very thin.

VG = Vegetable Glycerin - the "vapor maker" of e-liquid. Used as a sweeter in many food sources, and also as a skin emollient. It's very thick. Often labeled just "Glycerine"

PG and VG are often used together in different ratios in e-liquid. For example, a 50/50 PG/VG ratio. Many juice vendors offer a range of different ratios as far as PG/VG.

Your problem is your high VG ratio of ejuice.

The problem is many premade coils have way too much cotton wicking the coil(s,) and they cannot wick effectively.

Move down to 50/50 ratio and your coils will last longer.

The VG produces the clouds.
The PG is the flavor carrier

If you want to use high VG juices you need to get an RDA or RTA. Learn to build and wick.

I use high VG juices every day but I use three RTAs

I'd say try reducing the VG like everyone else.

On a side note, this is the main reason I learned much about building and got my first RDA,
it's much easier to vape higher VG liquids with such gear.

My Subtank Mini has an RBA section which is easy to build and I can rock 80/20 with it but
that's the max she can take to still perform great.

I hope this helped a bit.

Agreed

I vape 70vg 30pg to 80vg

On my Silverplay Nano and Kayfun Monster Mini without any issues. They have big juicd wells, and I put the tails to the bottom of the juice wells, and both RTAs wick like a freight train. They work great.

I smoked 15 a day. I vape 12mg at 14-18 watts. 2-3ml a day.

Not expensive on coils or juice.

I'm not having a go, but the Vape industry has got a lot to answer for.
Giving people smart mods, expensive tanks and seeing them crash through so much juice and coils is depressing. All this whilst selling 'premium' e-liquid too.

Somehow, the balance is getting... hmm... unbalanced.

There are many ways to vape (most of which are totally valid, for each person) but I do feel starting on 3mg is just an excuse to sell liquid and coils.

Many of us started on 18mg or 24mg liquid at 6 or 7 watts. These 'new' power levels are very nice and great fun, but there is a line between sensibly advising people and just giving them hardware that is kind of leading them down an expensive path.

For 15 cigs, you really should be using one coil and 20ml (+/-) a week i.m.o.

Forgive me, I'm just saying it how I see it. :)

I vape a lot each day, using 1.5-2.2ohm coils in my Innokin 16D clearos, my PT2 mini tanks and PT3 mini tanks. They're on top of anything from an eGo 1100mAh battery to an iStick Mini 10, an iTaste MVP2.0, and a Sigelei 50w. I use a 60VG/40PG mix at 6mg nic. Even if using pretty much any 1 of those combinations exclusively...I get a minimum of a week out of each coil. Sometimes though, with my lighter eliquids, I can get 10-12 days, too! I get wonderful flavor from my liquids, good throat hit, my nic requirement is met...so I'm a very "happer vaper".

So, for me personally, there's no reason to buy more expensive, technically involved set-ups. Once you find the correct combination of coils + watts to vape at + a few eliquids with the correct nic % in them for you...you'll be fine, too.

This kind of illustrates my point.
Someone is trying to flog you more and more, bigger and better.
Is your tank a Kanger sub-tank?
