And I had TOTALLY forgotten that...

...and the only way I'd get to the mailbox alive was at night with total light discipline because she had night vision goggles and was a crack shot...

While today is the 72nd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor ...

I had the unique privelege to attend a meeting with two Pearl Harbor survivors, speaking about their experiences. Both are in their 90s now, and soon there will be no one left who can relate this event from memory ...

Its a memorial event held every year at the March Field Air Museum in Riverside, CA. Its an awesome aircraft museum at any time, with 75 WWII era planes on display, and one of the few remaining SR-71 Blackbirds. But every December 7th, they invite the public to meet and listen to these heroic men modestly describe their first-hand recollections of an historic day, and their service in the war ...

They spoke for over an hour, and held a small crowd of perhaps 40 people spellbound, myself included. I felt compelled to shake hands with both gentlemen, and to thank them for my life of freedom ...

Love that museum...I was telling someone else about it the other day. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton for three years and made many trips up to Riverside. The company I work for now has a factory in Corona so I still get to pop in from time to time.

I would have loved to have been there for this years event. You're very lucky...sigh. On a visit to the Midway in San Diego I had the opportunity to chat (for over an hour...) with a vet who'd been rear gunner in the SBD and TBD with over 150 missions under his belt. He had some amazing stories and it's sad to know that soon there will be nobody around to relate them.

My Dad was a WWII vet, but rarely talked about his service. He passed away in 2002 at the age of 100, and was already 40 years old when he was drafted ...

At air shows, and at military museums like the Midway, we always look for the likely WWII veterans and engage them in conversation. Its a history lesson in person. The last WWII vet will probably pass in our lifetimes, and that will be a sad day ...
