My understanding is the pure VG can be vaped straight from the bottle, but that it is thick so you'll have a really hard time getting it through the wick and into your throat. So people dilute it (this is where I get lost with % and math again, lol), but they use distilled water (tap water is ONLY safe to drink but NOT safe to inhale due to microbes or something the stomach acid kills but the lungs won't). So anything water you inhale or use in a netty pot MUST be distilled water. Others dilute it with PG and there's another thing that starts with a "T" you can dilute it with but I can't remember the name. I actually bought a bottle of ready-mixed vg with my nic level already in it and diluted distilled water already in it so I didn't have to try and figure those % out (got a 120 ml bottle for about 23 bucks and it is ready to vape out of the bottle so all I have to figure out is the % of flavor liquids I want to add)... But I understand your confusion, lol, I'm there too...

The best tip for anyone new to DIY is to buy a bunch of 5ml plastic dripper bottles (the dripper cap comes off) and only make only 2ml of a new mix.

You will make a lot of mistakes at first. Throwing away 10ml of refill can be painful - so painful you are tempted to keep it, and dilute it a bit just to use it up. Then you are vaping something you don't like much just because of the cost.

Just make 2ml first to try it out.

Read my post more carefully sc12, I'm looking for an understanding of the basics of diy since I didn't see any readily available info about getting started. The idea isn't to just vape plain old vg, it's to establish a starting point. The idea is to build off of that. No sense for you to even post if your not going to provide useful info. I'm betting there's a lot of ppl who are just as curious as I am that may get their questions answered in this thread.

I generally would agree with you IF what Danny referenced lightly wasnt already posted a million times over.... as in "read the stickied threads" at the top of the DIY forum. The info and.education is there a thousand times over. If you want to learn and develop a process it is essential reading. Quick and dirty learnin can certainly be done successfully. However, had I not taken the time to read all those stickies and the.posts they contained I would not have been able to make any advanced recipe very well much less create as many of my own as I have. I, along with many much longer term diy mixers, need.to start advising everyone new.to mixing to find these answers in the stickies instead of creating new threads for new mixers.

All the info you could ever want is there, and then some. All it takes is time to read it.

Oh, I spend on average probably 2-3 hours a night reading up on all sorts of vape related stuff. I've also read the majority of the stickies on diy as well. I was just looking for what's not clearly stated in almost any of them. Either way, I was asking for a little help and that's what I got from almost everyone. I just thought I'd respond to what was clearly a sarcastic "seriously bro", which really isn't necessary. If this isn't the place for asking for some help with something, point me in the right direction. Thanks to everyone else who's been great at answering questions.

In one of the sticky the fellow refers to needing tweezers to take out bits of batting and to use batting on the cartridge... Is that for a filter? What does one need to filter in DIY... I thought all the stuff was ready to use once mixed (thinking of chicken soup broth and cheese cloth now, lol...) I'm lost as to what the cartridge is for (hopefully this won't be another face-palm, lol)

you were blind but now you see , i think thats how it goes lol , must be from reading all the blogs and stickies , but if you still get the occasional cataract feel free to ask thats why were here ( with 1 or 2 snide remarks) but that can be fun too , i might add 1 from time to time ,i how ever could never just mix a 2ml bottle where i put 10 drops of this and 20 drops of that 5 drops of something and 5 drops of something else , not to say i couldnt make it taste good , it would be great i just couldnt remake a 30ml bottle to taste like my 2ml , 10ml is easier per say but everybody is different , i tend to do 20ml bottles cause i know for the most part what i like and when i get down to my last few hint of flavors i want on the back end i divide my 20ml bottle in half and lets say i put 1% caramel in one and 1% barvarian cream in the second and see which i like best and because its 10ml now its just easy to keep up with i can even cut that into 2 5ml bottles and add more , thats just what helps me not get lost in my mix when coming up with experimental mixes , i think everybody is different so you just have to find what will keep you focused , and also i have said before you can get overwhelmed smelling the flavors and at times ive had to walk away for a day or so to keep from messing up on a new recipe

maybe referring to a 510 atty used to drip and taste your juice while mixing to see if you need to add more flavoring i use a 510 atty that i debridged which means a bare coil so no wicking there to hold flavors from other bottles of previously vaped juice

For testing flavors I am making, I picked up a copy of a reproduction of a clone of a dripper for about $7 at a Flea Market. With that you can put a few drops on the wick and take a hit. It will give you an idea of what works and what does.

After doing one flavor, I will simply rinse the wick and head under running water, blot it dry with a paper towel and put in the next sample. You may have to do it a couple times with the second and subsequent samples to totally get rid of the first taste, but it is great for quickly testing a juice.

As for math, I have always hated it!! Sucked at it in high school and college, and still do! Get an e-juice calculator (a bunch of free ones available on line, i use e-Liquid Calculator ) and let it do the math for you. It also will save your recipes for when you come up with the world's best ever juice!!!

Good luck and enjoy, but, be forewarned, it is addictive!!

A lot of the "calculators" ask with or without nic when figuring flavor amounts.... the nic is in the base, not the flavor, so why would the nic strength make any difference to how much flavor you would add to get 20% flavoring? If you're making a 5ml trial bottle of juice, with one flavor only, couldn't you just add 1 ml of flavoring? Okay - answered my own question... that would be 6 mls and overflow the bottle. So to make a 5 ml bottle of juice you'd take 4 ml of base with nic, and then add .80 of a ml flavoring to get a 5 ml bottle of juice? (damn... haven't seen a .80 ml syringe, lol...)

You don't mention in what context batting is used. If your refering to a cartridge such as a 510 atty for testing your mixes then I understand. A 510 atty is basically just a coil with a small wick. I will put a small peice of cotton which you refer to as batting in it which absorbs the test liquid and acts as a resivour to feed the juice to the wick. I remove it when done and it makes clean up fast and easy. Then when i need to test again I just repeat with fresh cotton.
