A Mech Squonker in 2025, really?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a squonk mod -- I know, a bit late to the party, but I was in vaping retirement during the whole cloud chasing craze. Basically, with my renewed interest in vaping, I'm hoping to have at least one of all the methods in my repertoire.

The Empire Squonk looked good on paper (all aluminum, nice refill mechanic, Vaperz Cloud is good in general, 21700, ...) but suffers from a flawed chipset. Even though I have the opportunity to purchase one, I think I'd rather not risk it. I suppose I could retrofit it into a mosfet/mech or PWM though.

Regarding current stuff, the VV Pulse V3 seems to be the crowd favorite for the money anyway, but I really don't dig the all-plastic design and prefer something that can survive a beating. There is also the new Damn Vape Atemporal 21 mod, but again, despite having an aluminum shell, it is really a budget device. Also, I don't really like the styling, and the small tank puts me off. But either of these are likely "good enough for the price".

In my pursuit, I came across the Defiant Designs DS and TS. All aluminum, simple clean styling, dual or triple 18650, and can be had for about the same price as a Pulse. There's a few things I'm not a huge fan of such as the detonator trigger, and it is a bit big... but for a last-forever desktop mod: that's not necessarily a bad thing. My theory now is if I go big, I might as well go all in. The most significant difference over the others, I think, is that this is a mech. Great for longevity, but maybe it just isn't worth dealing with a mech in this day and age? Maybe a mech squonker is the perfect thing to scratch that itch though. I'm quite experienced in electrical engineering, so Ohm's Law doesn't scare me, but fiddling more with builds might prove exhausting.

Finally, I did stumble across the SQ217 as another available option when researching the mech above. I'd rather not drop >$200 though, especially when these other options are quite affordable. But, I'm happy to hear about it from others, or other similar options.

Oh yeah, I have a Asgard Mini, Dead Rabbit RDA Pro, and Sith. I'm considering getting either or both of Nitrous (especially if I spring for the DS or TS since 22mm fits nicely) and maybe an RDA4V V2.

Anyway, what are your thoughts, what would you do? Anyone love or hate any of these? Are there any devices I'm over looking? How do you feel about mechs in the modern era?

Thanks!

I enjoy mine. The durability and the way they hit is nice. It does kind of scratch a different itch, for me.

Count on more fiddling though, at least in the beginning; it can be a challenge to find a mech build that you like.

Being mindful and double checking battery polarity, coil placement and such to make sure you don't short it out, that's kind of a fiddly thing as well, in a sense.
