I've got the Imaxpower 8900mAh Portable Charger too does yours shut down if you don't use the PT for a minute or so? I have tried using 2 different 5v manual PT's am wondering if it would shut down if I were using an automatic PT. I have tried using the USB port on the charger and also the DC out port. Also the charger itself shows 4 lights when fully charged, but when I go to use it, it only has 3 lights lit thinking I need to send it back for replacement.

Wow, I just looked that up, it has a total capacity of 8800mAh! That thing would last a loooong time between recharges, lol. How much did that one cost you?
Yea, laptops are not very good for powering USB devices, usually with laptops you need a powered usb hub to get an extra boost for things like portable hard drives and stuff. I would definitely not use your PT on the laptop, especially since the fans were slowing down...
ok I didn't have time to compare,, but that 8000mah might not be what you think it is...
check out this thread where there was email correspondence on a particular power pack you will need to see what the output Amp that the pack can handle

also understand just because it works at a low mA doesn't mean its acceptable... it might blow the fuse of your power pack...it won't ruin your PT in either case though.
I had a knsten power pack rated @ 1A and my PT blew it... Ideal is 2A but the ecig type pt could acceptably use 1A-1.5A but again with caution.
