The latest from Brad Rodu's blog, tobacco Truth: http://rodutobaccotruth.blogspot.com/2013/08/a-tainted-legacy.html

Relevant in light of recent rumors about FDA's possible ban on online ecig sales "to save the children":

Abrams and Cartwright claim that children are confused about “which products are candy and which ones are the real deal.” This is a red herring. The sale of tobacco products to children is prohibited in every state; FDA monitoring reveals that the vast majority of retailers are compliant (here). If Legacy has evidence that tobacco manufacturers are marketing to children, those serious charges should be directed to states’ attorneys general. Since the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement, tobacco manufacturers have been prohibited from directly or indirectly targeting children. Legacy should produce evidence and file a complaint; otherwise their accusations are specious.

From Rodu's Blog: The eight million Americans who will die from a smoking-related illness in the next 20 years are not children, they are today adults. Preventing youth access to tobacco is important, but that can be accomplished without condemning to premature death those parents and grandparents who are current smokers.

That is a powerful statement!

It sure is.

I'm going to save that quote for use in comment sections after electronic cigarette articles.
That should shut up all the "for the children" douchebags.

So far the antis and government have not stopped new smokers joining as the old ones die to any great extent. E cigs would be a short cut to the final goal of zero smoking. Even if a few more children take up vaping than would have taken up smoking (no danger, cheap and flavors and all that) the world would be better off with a generation of vapers and no smokers.
The losers would be BT & BP unless they can be the providers of e cigs.

I've seen this comeback before, and it just invites "No, smokers condemned themselves when they started smoking" right back atcha. People with preconceived notions can not be swayed with logic.

Which comes from a perception from those who never understood addictive behavior or chemical dependence, and/or who cannot separate addiction/dependency from societal burden. Those who won't take the time to employ compassion or empathy along with reason will fall into this pattern of willful ignorance on one important topic or another.

It may be a more effective statement to add at the end, "who are current smokers either because they are old enough to have started smoking as youth prior to the smoking prevention campaigns, or because they were just youth whom the campaigns utterly failed"
