In any case if it got that hot Neither the mod or the batteries are safe to use.
Personally, I don't think I'd trust the USB charger on ANY 3 cell 18650 series box. Balancing is pretty critical with those.
did you buy it locally? if so I would take it to the shop and have them look it over. definately counds like you put the batteries in wrong. Hope you didnt fry anything, but kinda thinking you did.

After reading the bad stories on ECF about the problems people are having AFTER charging thru the USB port, I am charging the batteries with my little eFest Soda 2 bay charger as I don't have a proper 4/6 bay charger yet. Takes a long time to charge 2 batts then the 3rd seperately, but my RX200 is working perfectly so far. Buy a cheap $10 2 bay charger like mine if you have to.... But DONT use the USB to charge your batteries...

I read somwhere there is a firmware update for the RX200 to help sort the overheating thing out
also do some research and try and check to make sure your batts are genuine
if ya batts are not genuine and cheap re-wraps they could be the problem as they may get hot due to being under spec
if it got as hot as you say then remove the batts and dont use again until you find out why

Yes, update to v1.07. Do not charge USB with the v1.08 firmware though! People have recently bricked their mods.
Honestly I will not USB charge any multibattery mod that doesn't have built in lipos.
My rx got warm right when I first got it and began using it, and has been cool as a cucumber since. I did read others had the same experience.

Mine is out for delivery. So when I get it today I will be USB charging it. I don't own an external charger and cannot afford one atm, so I'll let you know if I have a similar experience..
The USB port on the DNA 200 does proper balance charging, I can't speak for the others however.
The 5v from the USB is just converted to a higher voltage and a dedicated chip controls the battery charging, monitoring and maintenance, but battery type needs to be set to the correctly type and IIRC the capacity in the EScribe software.

What worries me about charging this mod via usb is that it reads perfectly balanced batteries as having different voltages. So when it tries to balance charge it may over/under charge each cell that isn't reading correctly. I'd only use the port if the mod is dead and you have no other choice and don't let it fully charge
A good balance charger will NEVER overcharge, it will always take the highest voltage cell and bring it down to the same voltage as the others then charge all back up at the same time. The variations you see can be normal as the balancing happens some cells maybe .1 or .2 (sometimes more) over the others, if the charger is doing it's job you'll see those cells discharge and when they're all at the same voltage it will bring the cells back up.

I completely understand what you are saying, BUT if the board is reading the wrong voltage (like the incorrectly displayed on screen voltage) then it is going to charge accordingly, and if a particular battery reads low on the board side, when it gets charged it will then be overcharged.
That's why I said a good balance charger, I happen to know that the DNA 200 has a chip on board dedicated to doing just that.
I can't say how the RX or any other mod goes about doing it's balance charging or how accurately it reads each cell.
I will say this in the world of external LiPo balance chargers (the dedicated ones, not the ones made for mods) there is alot of truth in the old saying you get what you pay for.
That's true. My $150 Lipo rc charger is about 8 years old and still works perfectly and accurate.
I never plan on using usb charging so I'm not worried because I have 6 other mods/tanks I can use
i still got my old lipo charger from rc days and as said you def get what you pay for i have learnt over the years some stuff just aint worth scrimping on as far as battery saftey goes
i also watched some reviews on the rx200 as i was thinking about getting one as a bit of a beater for work to back up my DNA Version which balance charges pretty much perfect as i think the board was origonaly designed for lipos .also when looking at the EVOLVE specs for DNA board it also states it will do individual batts such as 18650,s because of the dedicated built in balance circuit
and one of the reviewers done a lot of testing and is not that sure that the RX200 is realy capable of good balance charging and recomends if you use one , you should charge the batts externaly . at least as a safety aspect to keep the batts in sync
i will still get an RX200 later but also get buy myself a new 6 bay charger for my 18650,s

I have been charging my mod for 2 weeks via the USB port with zero problem. I have 3, married, VCT4s in it. Have not updated to 1.08 could care less about the font. Mine has been spot on. Small variation in discharge between batteries. .1 or .2 volts.
Rx200 is a decent mod especially when you consider how cheap it is but it is not a mod to use where it might take a beating I don't think it will hold up to more then normal use. I'm running mine on the 1.08 firmware and so far have had no issues apart from the SS TCR not working great with the SS wire I use and I never use onboard charging as I've found it always faster to charge externally. Mine got a little warm even with 1.07 but seems better with 1.08 although it never got to what I'd class as hot but therein lies a problem as it's subjective to each person on what is warm or hot.
as far as using it for a work beater, its just a phrase
would rather have a cheaper mod to use at work etc

A beater is the last work I would to describe the rx200. and the last place I would want to use it is around work or anywhere it might make contact with the ground. I dropped mine from a very low height and it stopped working.
