I just received an email from noreply@gk2gk.com

Þornbjörg, here's a new way to meet your geek match near REDACTED. Become a Geek 2 Geek Gold Member for six months for just $13.33 per month and we will feature your profile on Facebook at no extra cost

Embedded url in email was http://www.idevmail.net

This is the only place I've used the special characters, I normally spell it out, so I know it HAD to have come from this userlist.

Unless your machine is 100% bug free, you never, ever allow cookies and know for a fact that your email provider isn't feeding you advertising based on your browsing preferences and habits, looking at ECF as the source of your spam is rather thin.

ECF doesn't sell user lists. Emails are hidden from being scraped. However, cookies on your own machine can be read at will and easily by any site that wishes to.

Just to reiterate the above - we never have and never will sell any details to a 3rd party.

I didn't figure you had. That is why I am sort of thinking the userbase has been broken into...

I haven't logged into this account in a couple of years, and I've gone through 2 machines and half a dozen OS installs since I last logged in. Something, somewhere, was able to tie Þornbjörg to my email address with no machine having a browser history that would tie the two together online, and certainly no history on my current machine, and any record online would have been quite dated.

To that effect; Google, Bing, and Yahoo all come up empty when trying to search for my email address and my username here.

I've dealt with break ins before, and I would say your userbase has been compromised with the data being either distributed or sold.

Again, I wouldn't be so concerned if it wasn't for the fact this is the ONLY place I've ever used the 'short form' (using the special characters) in my username. Þ is normally spelled with Th and ö is usually without the umlaut, as I did on my avatar picture.

EDIT: Also glad to see SmokeyJoe is still around. Been a long time since I saw your name.

Email lists have been around for ages. I still get emails addressed to addresses I haven't used in years.

Claiming the servers have been compromised when there's absolutely no proof that this has occurred does nothing more than fuel rumors. And let's face it, that's exactly what you're claiming.

As such. Going to close this.
