I have a cat, and all my girls are allergic. She lives in the garage in a condominium I constructed out of sonotube, insulation, carpeting, shelving and ramps. She has 1000 acres of woods to explore, a warm comfy bed, gets to come and go as she pleases, and gets a lot of attention. I don't think I've ever met a happier cat. Not my first "Barn Cat" by far, and you would not believe the tone and physical shape these cats attain in this environment. The neighbors love em, and when they get too old for the "outdoors" lifestyle, there is always a neighbor ready to adopt them and take them inside and spoil the HELL outta them.

We rarely see them again if we don't come over to visit. They don't know a pillow in the picture window or gourmet food until they're adopted, but once they DO know it, they're not too keen on coming back. Can't blame them, the cold is tough on old bones. I believe because of the very healthy food we DO feed them, the exercise and outdoor life, they sure seem to live to a ripe old age though.
God Bless you Louis for taking such good care of your barn cat. I am always looking for barn homes for the many that are outdoors cats and just need a little shelter. Mine were all strays and love the outdoors so they go out every morning and come in at dinner time for the night. My vet and other rescue friends very vocally disapprove of the fact that my cats go outside but since they came from the outside they would die a slow bored death if contained all day and not be able to hunt the frogs and field mice. They are all fixed and vaccinated so I hope and pray they survive anything else they encounter daily and come home every night but if they do not I know they lived a life they loved.

No cats here. Not only is my hubby allergic and we travel alll the time with business, I have 2 Belgian Tervuren dogs. One is a 5 month old puppy who grew up his first 12 weeks with cats, but the older one thinks cats are prey. Nope, although I love cats and have had several in the past, no cats now.

My cats LOVE a paper bag. I throw them open n the floor all the time. They fight over who gets to play 'fort' in it

Yes it is flannel and because I make them for many local shelters people donate flannel to me. I also buy it on sale at Joann's and have bought flannel pillow cases at garage sales and use that. One pillow case will make one hammock if you cut some off. I made one for my front porch out of an old crate. I will get a picture as soon as I get dressed.

I see cats in those at PetSmart all the time.

A thought that might make them even easier to make if the flannel is strong enough: Poeia is afraid of the dark so I cover the cage on 3 sides. Her bed faces the open side so she can look out at night and light comes in through top as well. I folded an old sheet in half and put copper grommets along the top (it's almost 6' around so it needs extra support along the way.) You could sew the hammock (I see it's double thick) and put a grommet in each corner. Then you just loop the fastener through it.

I used this one that my local hardware store had.
Amazon.com: General Tools & Instruments 71260 1/4-Inch Grommet Kit with 48 Grommets: Home Improvement

The hole punch doesn't work well but I just put a tiny hole in the fabric about an inch or two from the edge. Ease the neck through the hole (enlarging it just enough to get it through), put the ring on top, put the pointy thing on and whack it twice with a hammer.

I will start looking around for a suitable crate today! I'm currently working on a queen-sized quilt, and I could use a break for a smaller project. Hauling the weight of the quilt back and forth through my sewing machine is tiring. Thanks so much!
And NOW we return you to your normally scheduled chat lol.

Thanks Chanel. All of our cats have been dumped in the woods by owners who think somehow that is more "humane" than taking them to a shelter. Usually, they're pregnant. We care for them until they litter, then get them "fixed" and their shots. My kids have spent DAYS outside of Kroger giving away kittens.

That "outdoor" nonsense. I could just go ballistic when I hear that crap. I have NEVER lost a cat to a varmint (we do have coyote and hawks around), and in 25 years, I have lost ONE to the road. Their Condo has picture windows, and is built up against 3 heated walls and the ceiling. Once when it was 20 below outside, I stuck a thermometer in there just to check, and it was 45F in there. With their heavy winter coats, and thick beds, that is PLENTY warm. We don't feed them ANY table food, just the "Super Premium Maintenance" formula from Costco. Wait, they get the giblets from chickens and turkeys, and any left over fish, so they do get the occasional human snack. And a can of sockeye salmon at Christmas.

Anyway, I've heard that nonsense about the "cruelty" of having an outdoor cat. SUCH b.s. When I die? I want to come back as one of MY cats. All day long, they do exactly what cats want to do. Either lolly/nap on the porch swing, up in the tree fort, or they are on the prowl, hunting. Our newest, Luna, was only a kitten 2 years ago. FEARLESS. We howled with laughter watching from inside as she stalked a small group of Turkeys in the yard. When she finally got close enough to pounce, she about had a heart attack when that big bird stood tall and opened it's wings. Wish I had filmed it, SO cute.

I bought a new lamp for the bedroom as I only had a 100 watt bulb in there. . . A few days later I stuck it in the bedroom. When I went in with Poeia later that afternoon, I decided to push it back, closer to the wall. Poeia, who is a chicken, did not approve. She ran down my shirt and onto the bed. As I said something comforting, I heard a noise and turned around. She had slid down the footboard (I have a wrought iron bed) and was walking out of the bedroom as fast as she could.

 You don't need a cat -- you've already got a bird with loads of CATTITUDE!! :)

The I'mnotZak family has their own mini fur farm.:) A really handsome flat faced persian named Gus, a 11 month old Maltipoo named Papi, and finally, our 3 month old Yorkie baby named LuLu, all 1 pound, 4 ounces of the little princess. Gus is very attached to my 16 year-old son, Papi is my best buddy, and LuLu, well, I think you could guess, is mommy's baby. (Except for the 4am potty call... that has become my honor.)

What a great menagerie! How many hours a week do you spend grooming fur babies? :D

D'aaaawwwww! Love both the kitties AND those hammocks! Bless you for your work on behalf of the kitties!!

S'okay, Clnire. You've got those wonderful doggies to take care of!

I just love that so many people on this thread have such a heart for God's winged and furry creatures.:wub:

Oh WOW! If you could build one of those just a, um, little bit bigger (ahem ), I'd spend all day in it in a heartbeat! :p

Now you have hit on one of the few frustrations of my existence. Gus the cat with attitude has himself a "Lion's Cut." He loves sporting that look down here in the heat and humidity. :D We have had plenty of that over the past month as I know you are very well aware. I am your Space Coast neighbor to the slight north.:)

Papi the Maltipoo presents the largest grooming challenge. His snow white hair has changed to favor the curly poodle in his mixed breed. Translated, constant knots and snarls without twice daily combing, conditioning, and weekly trips to the kitchen sink for a bath. I'm not even going to mention tear stains...:(

LuLu, our newest fur baby arrival, will be 16 weeks old on the 12th of this month and tops the scales at a whopping 1 pound, 5 ounces. This little princess has attitude.:D As of now, a good combing every few days along with an every 10 - 14 day bath seems to get the job done. Grooming little LuLu is not the present time consuming daily chore. Yep, you guessed it, the challenge is the 100 daily potty trips that go hand in hand with pooch potty etiquette.

We love our fur babies:thumbs:

Have you considered just hiring a sheep shearer for the day a couple of times a year?
