wow, this is unbelievable. i never expected to see this kind of activity over this. i suspected i might have to do all of this myself.

@Vocalek
that letter with the blue writing. is that a response you got from the Lt. Colonel? does he want us to fill that out and send it to him?

you guys freaking rock!

No, the letter with the blue writing is not a response from the Lt. Colonel.

An AF member asked me to provide the words for them to write to the Lt. Colonel to persuade him to change the policy.

IMHO, people telling their own personal stories will carry much more weight than sending the Lt. Col. a gazillion copies of the same email message. So what I provided was a framework for people to use in telling their story.

The blue writing indicates where the person who utilizes the tool should insert their own wording.

Does that clear it up for you?

The Surgeon General sent this letter out today. the one thing that concerns me about the letter is this, "Advertisements claim electronic cigarettes are a healthier way to smoke but one sample tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) contained diethylene glycol—a toxic chemical used in antifreeze".

the problem with this is two-fold:

1: Air Force personnel and top officials, with the release of letter, will be sucked into the rhetoric and propaganda vomited by the FDA

2: The fact that the Surgeon General would submit this letter indicates that he has not done any type of research on the subject and i feel this letter is laying the ground work for banning e-cigs in the AF

this is very disheartening and i have been a bit depressed about it all day. if the AF bans e-cigs, i will end up dying of lung cancer for sure.

I was just going to post this, but saw your's.
It really p's me off.

Instead of being the leader, the USAF again over reacts.
If they only could see the potential of embracing the personal vaporizer and being the leader of our armed forces and the first to get their troops off cigarettes.

When I went through basic training way back when, they pushed cigarettes, The only time you got a break, you would be told to fall out for a smoke break.
I guess they still are pushing cigarettes in a way.

The new AFI 40-102 will be out this fall (most likely already written), and it will be probably a year before it could be possibly changed.

I would still be smoking if it wasn't for the price, but I am happy to be smoke free for over a year.
But I'm in the same boat as you, if I have to go to the smoke pit and smell cigarettes, I'm going to want one, two and continue from there.

I think I'm going to check out that snus stuff for work.

Does anyone know what stores sell snus, and how much it cost?

Anyone have the skinny (reader's digest version) why this ASH guy is so bad?? I know nothing about him (literally).

Where to begin???? Banzhoff is the director of ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) and sits very squarely in the anti-smoking camp. So squarely, in fact, that he's a zealot on the crusade against smokers (not smoking....SMOKERS). He's a nicotine-prohibitionist (except for the products provided by Pharma), and I fully feel his ultimate goal in life is to get every smoker out there in the world to either kill themselves, or bow at his feet as the 'saviour who showed me the way.'

He spreads disinformation (and outright lies when he can) like the wind spreads pollen. He takes a simple piece of 'perhaps....' and blows it up into 'OMG - this is gonna KILL EVERYONE!!!'

Lemme see - he's been credited with saying that as little as a 30 minute exposure to SHS can cause an otherwise healthy person to drop dead instantly of a heart attack. There's other stuff he's blown WAAAAAAY out of proportion, too, but just remembering this little snippet makes me want to hurl.

Here is an illustration of what Vicks is talking about.

What the ASH press release said:

* the toxic chemical diethylene glycol was found in the e-cigarettes which were tested
* various mutagenic, carcinogenic, and genotoxic chemicals were also present in the products

What the FDA said in its press release:

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced that a laboratory analysis of electronic cigarette samples has found that they contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze.

What the FDA's Lab Report actually said:

tobacco specific nitrosamines and tobacco specific impurities were detected in both products at very low levels. DEG was identified in one cartridge, Smoking Everywhere 555 High...at approximately 1%.

Facts they all left out:

  • TSNAs are found in FDA-approved nicotine products such as the patch, gum, lozenges, and prescription inhalers.
  • The quantity of TSNAs in the highest nicotine level of the e-cigarette cartrdiges tested is equal to the amount in a 24 mg patch and less than the amount in a day's supply of nicotine gum.
  • Antifreeze is not an ingredient in e-cigarette liquid
  • DEG is a chemical added to tobacco to keep it moist
  • The quantity of DEG found in that one cartridge is about 100 times lower than the Minimal Risk Level
The bottom line is that the FDA did not find any potentially hazardous substances in either the liquid or the vapor in quantities large enough to present a danger to human health. But by the time that ASH-haff got through with the story, there were gobs of toxins and carcinogens found, making cigarette smoke oodles safer to inhale.

Dude, you haven't found you way to the other side of the tracks? Or as some say, the dark side?

Let me be your guide, as a traveler to these unknown places over a half year ago. But beware, some never find their way back.:evil::evil::evil:

Enter here, if you dare! :toast:

I cant find the thread where some organization says: "E-cigs introduce more new smokers" but after awhile that came back to stick in my craw...

Quick definitions (craw)

▸ noun: a pouch in many birds and some lower animals that resembles a stomach for storage and preliminary maceration of food

Umm well, I though a craw was like my head where the hairline is -- well nevermind that -- new smokers!? Uhh-uhh nopers. New vapers!

A clean nicotine delivery system. I might as well say that I drink my nicotine just like a cup of coffee. I definitely do not smoke!

Calling it "new smokers" seems to be like a subtle mind game...

One of the other items in the article that struck me was the whole catridges being filled with other substances thing.

That is obviously a stab at the heart of e-cigs. The whole concept of using something for an un-intended purpose can apply to literally anything.

It's amazing how much the AF forces anti smoking campaigns down our throats and then, when a better alternative shows up, they crucify it without any research.

It's typical though. I guess I'm used to it by now. Nothing suprises me in the AF anymore. Completely absurd decisions are made and enforced on the daily basis. Common sense needs to be left at the door.
