When I started DIY, I was content to just make unflavored juice, because it did the job for me and is dirt cheap and drop dead simple to make. I picked up a couple of flavorings for the heck of it though, since they are relatively cheap compared to smoking, so I would have something to mess around with and break up the monotony once in a while. It did not even really matter what the flavors were really, just something to change things around now and then. As long as I was getting enough nicotine, it was all good (or at least OK).
However, I have been trying to get my wife to fully make the switch from smoking. She will vape, but also still felt the need to smoke several times a day. So we talked about it, and it seems she is still pretty hooked on the flavor aspect of tobacco. So then I started experimenting with more flavorings, searching for something that would work better for her. Of course nothing will fully replace the taste and feel of smoking, but if I can get close enough, maybe it will work better for her. So based on info gathered here, I have been working on mixes with a wider range of flavorings, and have made a couple she actually likes, although she still ducks out for a smoke a few times a day. Maybe that will never change, but she has cut way back on the smokes, so it is OK.
But the funny thing is, now that I have experimented with a wider array of flavorings, I find myself wanting more and more of them. I scour threads in this forum, and check out offerings from many vendors, looking for good deals on things I have not tried yet. Now I do not have a really practical reason for doing so, but I have become fascinated with the arts and crafts aspect of DIY. I used to chuckle at the folks that have literally hundreds of flavorings and can't seem to help themselves from getting more, but now I see how it gets that way.
It is a heck of a lot of fun playing research mixologist, and as far as hobbies go, it is not terribly expensive and it is relatively accessible once the basics a firmly understood. So now I want more bottles. I want a good scale and a dedicated crock pot or UC. I want at least one of every flavoring under the sun, God help me. And of course I need to dedicate more space in my home and get serious about organizing my equipment, supplies, and test mixes.
Funny thing though is that I still like unflavored a lot, and vape more of that than any flavor I have tried. So it is certainly not about needing to create a specific juice. No, it is about the hunt. I suppose maybe it satisfies some primal urge to chase and kill things and eat them or something. And that is OK, since no cute and furry animals are harmed in the process, and I have a new creative outlet. I could go on forever about it, but I have some mixing to do, so please forgive me for ducking out.
