Ok, put in my order for fa apple pie, double apple(sticking with fw since I use in hubs mixes and he loves it) fa cinnamon ceylon, Jimi' s rec. Ina Shisha golden apple, I want to get working on that Apple pie again...some other stuff too, I guess I will do small order when oos flavors back(biscuit, biscuit come back soon!).....getting to point where I could be able to do some compare/contrast same flavor, different brands....think it would be nice to add reviews to bcv site too, not that my opinion matters much, most should take my ramblings with a grain of salt, but I do find some reviews helpful, but sort of lacking in quantity on his site....I feel torn because on one hand, juice and flavor reviews can be so all over the place and subjective, yet I do read them.

Andria, I feel like a pest to you lately....how did cap cake batter work out for you? I remember you ordering it, but never saw what you thought about it, that was one I had been eyeing up, but had reservations about trying.

I ordered a couple sample packs from DIY Flavor Shack, and haven't been overly impressed by the flavors. I mixed up some blueberry the other night and it's decent, but I put some in a tank that I had mistakenly thought I rinsed out, and was pleasantly surprised. The tank had about .5ml of "On Cloud Custard" from VapeWild in it and the blueberry mixed in with it was damn good. This morning I filled a tank with half of each and I'm loving it. Now I just need to figure out a DIY blend to match it! [emoji1]

To be honest, I'm not entirely certain; the smell of it is horrible -- I have to keep it in a ziplock in the drawer or I can't stand to open the drawer! I mixed up a small tester with it, and blueberry, and some vanilla custard v2 I think, and I thought with that awful smell, I should let it steep for a while, and it has been steeping... and I think I'm almost afraid to try it out.

I wonder if that awful smell is what y'all mean by the "rancid" note. There's no "v2" on it, but according to everything I could find about it, there doesn't *seem* to be any diketones in it -- BCV is pretty good about identifying the ones that do -- but I can't say for sure one way or the other.

Ok, scratch that one off my wish list then!!!!

Ha! That's kinda hard to look past, ey? Capella Cake Batter is a no for me as well. I tried it once and that was all I needed to tell me to not touch the bottle again. Oddly enough, Nature's Flavors does it pretty well (meaning Cake Batter) -- it's odd becasue NF does so much poorly that I was surprised that they could pull off cake batter.

I may need to try that one then... that CAP Cake Batter smells so bad, I really can't imagine vaping something with that odor. I have a really keen sense of smell, and bad smells seem to affect me quite viscerally.

It's hard to really describe the smell. To me it's an overwhelmingly *artificial* smell... very chemical, but unpleasantly -- I used to find some volatile smells pleasing -- gasoline and nail polish remover and solvents like that -- but since developing the asthma I've learned to shy from strong odors like that, they're not good for tetchy airways at all. but anyway... I just went and took a whiff of it, and I think the smell is sort of like... spoiled butter? But artificially. Really hard to quantify it.

Andria

PS: the acetyl pyrazine smells like Fritos to me! I can see why they say that using too much gives you a flavor like corn chips!

Thanks Andria for for that info (it took me awhile to figure out what BCV was but I found it). This Diketone thing has me a little concerned so I went to BCV and checked all my flavors and found some I have do contain it so I am going to ditch them and replace with good flavors.
I have a few flavors that aren't on BCV so does anyone know where else I can look to see if they do contain any bad stuff?
I am really new to DIY so this thread is a big help, Thanks to everyone posting on here!

TPA:
Coffee
Flue Cured Tobacco
Honey
Maple
Mexican Coffee
Mild Black Tobacco
Tiramisu

LorAnns:
Banana Cream
Butter Rum

Flavors Express:
Grape
Pumpkin Pie
Strawberry

TPA you can find the info on their site if you look at the MSDS Full. IMO LorAnns should be thought of as suspect (with regard to this) and especially with those flavors! Flavor's Express is a question mark, but that Pumpkin Pie is a maybe. Maybe.

See if you can start to identify by smell what similarities those concentrates have that you know have it. You can start to recognize the smell if you try. It won't be full proof, but it can suffice if need be.

Also -- generally the ones that have it are some type of custard, or cream, or pastry (cakes, pies, cookies, etc). It's actually a flavor that's found in butter and margarine, so Mr Mann is absolutely correct, you can just about smell it when you open the bottle. Not sure what the deal is with Capella's Cake Batter; it smells like spoiled artificial butter, but there is no info that it contains diketones; maybe it's the "rancid" note they were attributing to butyric acid.

Last night when I made my bedtime cocoa, I tried something to see what I might determine -- instead of the 1/2 tsp of vanilla that I normally add, I tried 2 drops of Capella's Vanilla Custard v2 -- it wasn't good at all; just too artificial tasting. I've never picked up a disagreeable note from it, in my vapes, but in actual food/drink, it's terrible, whereas Capella's Sweet Cream is spot-on -- you can add it to low-fat milk to make it taste like whole milk! Tonight when I make my cocoa, I'll try a couple drops of TFA's French Vanilla Creme and see if it does better -- that one is diketone-free, but no DX on it, it's a re-make of one of their others, maybe French Vanilla Deluxe, not sure.

I just grabbed my Capella Cinnamon Coffee Cake and that concentrate is nothing short of glorious, glorious I say! But, I have a HARD time believing it is not pretty substantial in diketones. If you .... that one up next to the known liquids with these chems, you'll see. Now, "substantial" means in comparison to others that have it but have hardly no detection like Capella Raspberry v1 which has diketones but that would take the K9 unit to detect.

Ordered some fw today, diyjuice.com...vanilla malt(hey, I LOVE malts and saw this, YAY, worth a try! They have a bunch of other malts, but being conservative, and trying one first, so excited for all the potential mixes if it ends up tasting good!), vanilla custard(I know, I know), pina colada(for my dear mother to give more variety...the only thing she's liked besides HIC' s lime coconut recipe I make for her monthly, was a pina colada juice, so we'll see how this palate expansion attempt goes hopefully better than operation mango mix trial from 1¢ sale, I know she gets bored but she's so hard to flavor profile), magma current, white chocolate(have tfa' s and while I do like, I do get a mild pepper note, and it's not my nic, I can smell it there too and i got it from another tfa-vanilla custard maybe?, so I just want to try this one too), think I am forgetting one more....still waiting on bcv to restock biscuit(andria, is it getting hard to be patient for you too? Lol, I check daily), fw whipped cream(debating trying, not sure if wc is even my thing in juice as an accent note or not, it's let me down in mixes before, so trying another vendor should answer that ). And I should be set for a good long while....I think.

A good artificial vanilla seems hard to nail down. It's painstaking, but I think that what you're doing with trying some different things to see what works and what doesn't is about all we can do.

Let me know about that malt, will ya? I have a suspicion that that is the element I'm missing in my high-PG ersatz Long Bottom Leaf; they say it's similar to their other one, I think it's called "Shire Malt" or something like that... I tasted them both at the store, and yeah they're similar, but LBL has a much more robust flavor, just stronger altogether than the other one. My INW Cappucino with chocolate, vanilla, sweetener, a bit of Virginia Tobacco Absolute, and with the mothersmilkWTA in it (which is much smokier!), it's SOOOOOO close to the LBL... but I think it might be that malt taste that's missing.

I got my order from BCV today!!!!

The following just arrived:

CAP-Blueberry Cinnamon Crumble
CAP-Cinnamon Danish Swirl V2
CAP-Hazelnut V2
CAP-New York Cheesecake
Vanilla Bean Gelato-TFA
Shisha Bilberry-INW

And re-ups on these, they're so terrific:
DX Bavarian Cream-TFA
Shisha Strawberry-INW
Sweet Cream-CAP

Think I'll get up early tomorrow, so I can play Mad Scientist. :D Mooohahahahahaha!!! :D

Andria

PS: I think that Bilberry might be pretty good; that really blah Blueberry n Cream that I mixed up the other day? I had 4ml left of it, so I added 4 drops of the Bilberry, and it actuallty started to almost taste like something. The Billberry *smells* like the blueberries in those "Fruit 'n Grain" bars, so it might be just the ticket for the elusive Blueberry Muffin.

I'm about to try some of the recipes in the first post of the new Capella recipes thread, particularly the blueberry ones. I'll keep you apprised. :thumb:

Andria, have you have the Blueberry Cinnamon Crumble before? It's pretty low on "crumble" and could use some Biscuit, but only a little, but that flavor is jammin'! Great in conjunction with Blueberry Wild from TFA. Oh, and one reason why BCC is so nice is that it has more of the ground cinnamon spice taste vs. that awful cinnamldehyde cinnamon which is so omnipresent in cinnamon flavors!

I know, I get that cinnaldehyde is in cinnamon, but it's faint vs. being concentrated in a liquid -- grinding cinnamon bark never tastes spicy, as in hot spicy (at least not fiery). I've always wondered why cinnamon concentrates that are paired in desserts/sweets tastes more like cinnamon you'd actually bake with, yet the flavoring companies seem to only sell 'red hots' cinnamon when it's a standalone. The closet to ground cinnamon I've found is TFA's Cinnamon Spice, but even that one has too much eugenol (IMO).

Lol, blueberry buckle recipe is mine....might need a smidge of additional blueberry but I can't add blueberry wild there, which when I re- do will add some with blue extra too...sweet cream tones down the cinnamon down some for my tastes....the cinnamon Danish at least v1 tastes much like a "popular" ecf vendors "grandma's" version. Will post vanilla malt impressions, hope maltier than malted milk

Ah, Mr Mann likes too....and more reason we need biscuit back!

This one tasted like bakery cinnamon to me. 10 ml Cinnamon Flavor Extract
