This is a bit crazy but I just found out I'm allergic to Aspartame after over a year of my feet and ankles retaining fluid in them and saw numerous different Dr's and not one of them pegged this. I'm type 2 Diabetic and have used Splenda now for the longest time in my coffee which doesn't have any Aspartame in it. However I was drinking diet Coke for a long time and really enjoyed my diet Coke for some time now. Well after taking everything into consideration I finally narrowed it down to maybe it was the diet Coke. I stopped drinking the Diet Coke and within 4 days almost all the fluid is gone from my feet, ankles and just from the knees down and my legs are back to normal now a week later. It's amazing this was it, I just wanted to report this just in case anyone else may be having this problem. I was starting to think it might be vaping and I would have to quit. If any vendors happen to be using Aspartame for a sweetener I really wished they would somehow disclose this on there juice label, I mostly DIY all my own juice but I would hate to buy a juice that has this Aspartame in it on the rare occasion I buy a bottle of juice. This Aspartame is like poison to my body anybody that may be having any fluid retention I would double check to see if your using this Aspartame in any drinks or food products and quit using it and see what happens.

This is interesting MWA. DH has a circulation problem in one of his legs and he has issues with it swelling. I have noticed that when he drinks too much Diet Mountain Dew, the swelling gets much worse. I just chalked it up to the sodium content though. We will have to give this some more thought. Thanks for sharing.

mwa, aspartame breaks down into two amino acids and methanol (wood alcohol) at temps well below an atty coil. It is a known and proven neurotoxin due to the methanol formed either in warm storage (think pallets of diet coke cans in the hot sun) or from metabolism in the body. Other metabolites have been shown to cause seizures, brain tumors, ocular damage, and other nasty effects from aspartame consumption. IMHO, as well as the opinion of many researching docs around the world, it should be avoided by everyone always. It also switches your brain to crave sweets! For this reason very few people lose weight using it, and generally gain weight.

Google "aspartame neurotoxin" to get more info. Aspartame just happens to be very sweet. If people knew why it was synthesized in the first place, they would avoid it like the plague.

I think sucralose is probably a somewhat better sweetener for juices, as it does not break down from heat...although I personally have an issue with it being a chlorocarbon, and is thus hard on the liver to metabolize, but in comparison to aspartame it is pretty benign.

Kurt, Yes, believe me I have read and read up on all the Aspartame scares and stories of many of people having issues with this chemical, and why it's even allowed to be used is beyond my belief ( Thanks FDA ) . It's amazing the problems it has caused me over the last year, more Dr's should do a little reading up on this, especially after the fact of me seeing as many as I did and them not figuring this out what was going on with me and me myself having to nail it down. Main reason for me posting what I did was just to help anyone else who may be having the fluid retention issues I had for over a year or any other of the things Aspartame can attribute to.

Kurt all I have ever used to sweeten my juices has been sucralose and Splenda to sweeten my coffee, I quit using the Equal in my Coffee a while ago because I swore it gave me a headache, yet just never put together the Diet Coke thing probably because I enjoyed it so much and never even knew it contained the Aspartame, now I wont touch it, though I know they make the Diet Coke sweetened with Splenda so I may check into this but for now as much as I went through I don't even want to look at a Diet Coke for a while. Thanks for your Post Kurt

@ Salem,

Get DH off that diet soda ASAP, it's hard to do when your used to drinking it but just have him completely cut it out ASAP and see what happens in just 1 week. Believe me you will know, in just 4 days the difference it made with me was crazy, with in a week I was completely back to normal and healthy again. Also make sure you read labels on anything Diet, I'm reading all labels from this point forward on anything I eat or drink and staying FAR AWAY from this Aspartame believe me I am .

I really hope no juice vendors are using Aspartame and if they are they fully disclose this.

Thank you both for this info. I will not be bringing anymore in the house (may be cranky for a few days lol) and I will be paying closer attention to the "diet" labels from now on. We already know how the sugar free stuff gets us with the Sugar Alcohols that most "sugar free" items contain.

Yes,....Aspartame is some scary stuff. Ive researched and read books in the past about it and other chemicals that are added to our food.
My son had to go on a gluten-free diet, so the research into that , led me into a whole other world that we never new about our diet and what is
added to the foods we eat.

Sorry that your a diabetic mwa. If i remember right, diabetes is one of the side effects from aspartame.
If you want to learn more ....and dive down the rabbit hole

Aspartame is a nasty chemical. I developed a benign parotid tumor in front of my right ear after I began drinking diet canada dry ginger ale earlier this year. After discovering the tumor, I immediately quit drinking diet soda. The reason I had started drinking diet soda in the first place was to get off drinks containing high fructose corn syrup, which was causing acne. Now I drink Simply Lemonade which satisfies the sweet tooth fix.

Thankfully the human body can heal itself quite well and the tumor is disappearing on its own. I've been on a 'lite' version of the gerson diet and the veggies work wonders.

That would be it. At first I was resigned to having surgery but the doctor I saw wasn't able to perform surgery until 3 months down the line. Having read about the gerson therapy I figured it couldn't hurt to go on a lite version of the diet. Eating a 2 lbs. salad with raw veggies everyday, combined with quitting the aspartame containing diet soda, and the tumor had started to shrink significantly after 1.5 months. At that point I canceled the surgery. It's been 4.5 months since diagnosis and the tumor has shrunk roughly 75%.
