All up in your grill..
I'm not really into politics all that much. Sorry to ask but what does that mean?

As it relates to us no one knows. We are all hoping that this bill won't mean the end of e-cigs!

For smokers of real cigs it is a blow. It will make it so all "lights" "milds" "mediums" and "flavored cigs" are pulled from shelves. It will give the FDA control over tobacco and it will likely push pack prices over $10 all over the country in less then a year. Ultimately it will make phillip morris (marlboro) The ultimate power in big tobacco which is why they sponsored it. But lets not complain! Surely the government knows whats best for us and we have no choice but to obey them for our own good. (sarcasm sure loses something in text doesn't it?)

If you look north, those of us in Canada have been going through these sorts of changes for about 10 years now. The top half of our cigarette packages have a warning and a picture of a diseased heart, rotten yellow teeth or a cancerous lung. Last year they eliminated the words, SMOOTH, LIGHT, etc. The purpose in this was to let people know that just because you were smoking a LIGHT cigarette, you shouldn't consider it healthier. My analogs went from being LIGHT to being called SMOOTH. So the lighter varieties don't disappear, they just change the name.

In Ontario, they also banned cigarettes from being displayed hoping that when kids walk into a convenience store (or any other store for that matter), covering the "power wall" at the cash register would deter them from smoking. They did that at the same time they changed the descriptions (Light to Smooth). If you didn't know what the new name of your cigarette was, you couldn't just point at it on the shelf any more. The clerk would pull out a binder with pictures of all the brands that they sell and you could choose from the binder. Then the clerk would go to this wall of what I could only describe as a wall of filing cabinets & pull out what ever your selection was. It was really wierd ordering that way. I felt like I was ordering porn.

I found an interesting article on one of our network news sites.

CTV.ca | Obama to sign anti-smoking bill in Rose Garden

"Opponents from tobacco-growing states like top-producing North Carolina argued that the FDA has proved through a series of food safety failures that it's not up to the job. They also said that instead of unrealistically trying to get smokers to quit or to prevent others from starting, lawmakers should ensure that people have other options, like smokeless tobacco."

It would have been a real bonus for all of us if in the last sentence they had included "....or personal vaporizers."

Have you actually read this bill?

What is most interesting in this press release is that it is from Altria (Philip Morris). They are thrilled that the bill passed because it gives the FDA very little control over anything. At the same time, it gets the tobacco companies off the hook--from now on they can just follow the law with probable very much lower liability in the courts. In rereading and really thinking about the bill, it is mostly a list of the things the FDA *cannot* control in manufacture and marketing of tobacco cigarettes. The authority the FDA *is* given is very, very small. On the e-cig, I don't think the bill has anything to do with them. Incidentally, the bill doesn't prevent the marketing of "lights, etc.", it just prohibits use of those words. Tobacco companies already know, as we speak, about how they're going to get around that with package design and promotion. Those characteristics will be conveyed without using the words. It's a sham.

"As president, George W. Bush opposed the legislation and threatened a veto after it passed the House last year. The Obama administration, by contrast, issued a statement declaring strong support for the measure."

Shows how much I kept up with politics before coming to this forum. I didn't realize W. ever made a decision I could stand behind.

I'm still confused as to what exactly this means for the future of the e-cig. Does it all depend on the SE case and whether the liquid is determined a tobacco product? If this is the ruling, it doesn't seem to be good as the bill focuses on flavors, marketing, ingredients, and nicotine strength.

If these are determined not to be a tobacco product then it would more than likely fall into the hands of the FDA as a drug/device combination, correct?

I hope there is something I've missed along the way, but either way it seems to be a lose/lose. I hate to speculate, but I'm finding it hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Right now Riddle, it makes no matter what happens to the e-cig. We'll still get our supplies just fine dispite the bill.

What it DOES mean is that President Barak Obama Bin-Ladin pretty much signed a bill that is basically a death warrant to current smokers in this country. While giving Philip Morris the clear way to market it with virtually no competition.

Nice, eh?

BigJim you and I would get along real nicely. What Obama is doing is disgraceful. It's a disgrace to the presidency and to the citizens of these States. I wonder what the odds are that this bill will get repealed like they did with alcohol during the prohibition times. I don't think it will go as far as it did back then, but maybe we few can stir the pot just enough.

This is clearly WAY out of bounds and uncalled for. I want no part of any e-smoking support from anyone who would post such a thing. It's embarrassing to e-smokers and guests who come to this forum. I hope I'm not the only on here sick and tired of the bashing of my country, my government and my President.

Shame on you Big Jim. All the shame I can muster is headed your direction.

Totally uncalled for ...

...He's just exercising his freedom of speech while he still can.

Its funny how quick you are to defend your government and President. I guarantee you that they would not be so quick to defend you...or your rights for that matter.
