I've always wanted to try traveling by train. The trip to NY was fun ... the return trip not so much. Since freight trains have priority over Amtrak, it seemed that we were stopping every hour or so to let a freight train pass.

That’s because freights make money, and they own the rail line. Amtrak leases the use for almost nothing.

It’s actually pretty common for smaller companies to lease rail use from larger ones, and they almost always have to yield right of way to the owner company.

Empathy for your experience, but at least you know why, if that helps.

I'm about ready to hop on a freight train, like that chick in that Journey song. I don't think it was a freight train, but for me it will be.

This is going to require some prep. I need to find a spot where the train is going up hill so I can hop it with less danger.

Also, a bottle of mad dog, and oh hell, since I'll be drinking, some Basics.

Then, I should be good to go OH EXCEPT I don't want to accidentally catch one going to CA. I need to go in the other direction.

My imagination is realistic. I'm not going to hop a freight train with some Natty Shermans and a bottle of Dom Perignon.

I mean, a) I would be robbed (and potentially raped) by the hobos. No thanks. I need to blend IN.

OMG that remains me of this romance novel I read one time!!! This woman was like on a freight train with her KID because she was all beat up by her abuse husband and hungry predators WERE like, after her only there was also a secret millionaire who's wife died or something and he rescued her and took her to his ranch, where he reconciled with his family but she wound up feeling "not good enough" or whatever, so she like took off and evil abusive husband showed up! Danger ensued!!! But like, in the end evil abusive husband like, got taken down by Our Hero and they lived happily ever after.

No cigarettes at all were involved, or I would do that one! You ever try explaining cigarette breath in a ROMANCE novel? it is not possible.

That part is correct.
That freight trains get priority is a commonly held myth.
When there is a single track railroad, trains have to meet at a siding somewhere. Freight traffic has grown substantially since the 1990's and railroads have spent tens of billions on capacity but you really can't expect them to invest more for an entity that does not contribute to that capacity. Congress said it was too expensive .
Sorry for the rant.
Back on topic, vaping is treated as cigarettes, not allowed.

I know and they are so fun!!! You don't even have to vape to go out there and have a great time!

They may have locked them now or something due to like, IDK, SOMETHING.

But, that would mean a bathroom in every car, and I can't see that.

One day, when I am old and greyer, me and the husband will tour the country by train. I will find a way to vape AMTRAK. You will not defeat me.

But, I HAVE always wondered about jail, too. I mean, not long term but you know as an old boring lady, I think I could get by.

Nope. That's a lie. I ATTRACT the crazy now that I am SO SANE, but I know what it's like. It's like ants to honey. Half the prison would want to shiv me, and the other half would like, defend my honor and call me Anna of the Ark of Life.

Course, that could get awful interesting too. The lack of nicotine would be my main problem but I could get one of my worshippers to ... in some snus or something. You know.

... to snus. Also an interesting if horrifying concept.

Err, there ARE bathrooms in every car.
If you live in the Northeast you would love Amtrak after one attempt to drive into the NY metro. Trains are fast, clean, frequent and generally on time.
From where I live 2.5 hours to Penn Station midtown. I drove it once, never again.
Outside the Northeast, different story.
And no, I wouldn't try vaping between cars. Too many passengers going to and from the cafe car. Any crew would wonder what you are doing.

I would explain I had really bad motion sickness and my doc gave me this inhaler to fix it and I am doing everything possible to like make sure if I puke, it will not be on the floor of the train.

They might not believe me, but if I start making "Hurk! HUrk! Noises and doubling over, like, they might leave it be.

I feel sad there is a bathroom in every train carriage. Such was not the case when I rode the rails.

I bet it's all safe now too, like you can't fall out or anything or feel the tectonic plates shift beneath your feet.

Sigh.

Maybe it will be the RV, not the rails. I can vape all I want.

BUT TRAINS. LOL.

I love train movies so much sometimes I used to wish one would crash, jus so I knew what it was really like. Not with my kid in tow (he had like a pretty serious train obsession for a long time, I ALMOST got sick of going to the Baltimore train museum. ALMOST.

But yeah, if I were alone on a train, it might be interesting. Etc.

That freight trains get priority may not be the case for every railroad planet wide, but that’s how it was explained to me by a CSX supervisor from Jacksonville (headquarters) when my husband worked as a bridge tender. Except juice cars, which get priority over freights.

Personally, I'd rather vape in an airplane restroom.
Ya still have to be sneaky about it, and woe unto you if ya set off the detector.

I've got standing invitations from business associates to visit interesting places like South Africa and Australia. Haven't done it 'cause the flights are insufferably long.

True :(. Actually, it's been years since that last happened. It's amazing what a window seat, a bandana, and acting like you're going to town on your nose will get you ;).

Sparing everyone the gory details that led up to this, but I made it back from Thailand last year sans vape.

41 years in the industry, but never worked for CSX.
