First and foremost, I want to say hello, and great forums here. From the bit of reading I've done so far, everyone seems friendly and helpful. Which brings me to the reason I'm posting.

I found out about e-cigs recently when I noticed a local gas station carrying them. They've got a single disposable, and then starter kits. I bought a disposable to see what it was like and enjoyed it. Decided to go ahead and order a starter kit online. Did a bit of google research and found a few blogs and some youtube videos, and ended up going with Greensmoke. Which from reading around here have found that they're not as great as what I'd been reading, and now I'm regretting it even though the kit hasn't arrived. :( I was wondering if you guys could help me start out. I've already decided, I'll just go ahead and return the GS kit after I get it. But with the information overload, I'm at a bit of a loss as to where to start.

A bit of info about myself, I've been about a pack a day menthol light smoker for 20+ years now. I work 12 hour shifts, but only get 3 breaks so I'll need something that will last that long, because I won't be able to recharge at work. Initially, I was thinking that I wanted something that looked like an analog, but now, after reading I don't think that's nearly as important as I initially thought. Initially, I liked the idea of cartomizers, but I'd like to be able to refill myself, as it seems the e-liquids are cheaper in the long run (if I'm understanding that correctly?) My main reasons for wanting to switch to vaping are saving money, and the fact that vaping seems to be healthier than analogs.

Hopefully that's enough info as I feel like I'm rambling at this point, but if there's anything I left out, feel free to let me know and I'll provide it. Thanks for the help, and again, thanks for the great forum!

Welcome to the wonderful world of vaping!

The kit most people are going to recommend to you is the eGo, and I agree with them all. It is the most recommended for a reason. It is durable, with a good throat hit and nice long battery life. You can't go wrong with an eGo or eGo clone.

As for the cartomizers, you can refill them as well, but changing flavors within the same cartomizer is difficult. You pretty much need one cartomizer per flavor. Some people swear by cartomizer, some swear by atomizers. They are cheap enough to where you should eventually try both.

E-liquid is cheapest when you make it yourself. If you are not up to the task, however, buying pre-mixed is still much cheaper then cigarettes. I mix my own, and spend less than $15.00 a month of juice supplies.

First, Welcome to the ECF!
I also bought a starter kit from a random-name-brand company before looking at the avalanche of information. I ended up just keeping the thing as an "in case of emergency" device.
I was in a similar situation with a pack-a-day, and went with the joye 510 which I'm still using because of the slimmer cigarette feel. The PCC (personal carrying case) is a must with these, especially due to your work shift-length though, as it can recharge the short-lived batteries.

People are going to suggest a larger battery and I'm going to agree since that is going to be my next step because I'm vaping a lot more than I smoked and have been recharging my 510 batteries like mad.
The good news is, there is a ton of awesome-tasting menthol flavors out there!
My suggestions for sampling (just from personal experience) would be:
Vapor4Life-Because it's your life - E-Cigarettes/Smoking Alternatives the wow cowboy menthol - delicious
Velvet Vapors - Home has the turkish menthol which is delicious
Vapors Etc. has some of the strongest menthol flavors I didn't know were possible.

Regardless, refilling is a lot cheaper than prefilled, and a metric ton less than analogs!

Sounds like you've put some good thought in it. Good idea going for the bigger battery and cartomizers are the easiest way to go. I'm sure you'll get a number of suggestions to go with either the Ego or Riva. If you do, get the big cartos (2.5ml) so you don't have to fill them but once a day.

Welcome to ECF. The most frustrating and enjoyable part is exploring the different liquids available.

Hi and welcome! I was also a 1 PAD menthol light smoker, I also bought Green smoke before finding this forum. I'ts been 15 days for me on GS, so I am happy that I made that first step. It truly made me see that I don't need the analogs, I still have two packs of analogs within reach but I don't care about them. I'm keeping Green smoke for a back up, but ordered a new system today. The advice here is great, it does take a lot of research to find what works best for you. I'll probably stick with cartomizers, and yes you can buy blanks & refill them yourself. A lot of folks here will help you out with choices, just want to encourage you to continue on this path, I know about informtion overload but it's worth the time spent. I'd say try the GS, you have 30 days to send it back, right? Then you can see what you do or do not like about it. Happy vaping!

Actually it’s just a well concealed façade.

We lull you in with Good Advice and then when you Least expect it we Pounce like Wild Dogs on a scrap of meat.

...

Having a small, cigarette looking PV sounds good but you will probably Hate the short Battery life. I would suggest an eGo sized PV. It is small enough to not stand out but has a big enough battery to get you thru most of the day.

Filler type cartomizers is a good choice when you start. They are easy to use and a not very expensive. You can either get them filled, not what I would suggest, or buy them blank and put your own e-Liquid in them.

Cartomizers also let you change flavors on the go. Just unscrew a carto of one flavor and then screw on a different carto of other.

Thanks everyone for the fast replies and suggestions! I really appreciate all the help. I've tried replying myself 4 different times now, and they seem to keep getting lost in the ether. Hopefully this one works!

First and foremost, I'll look into the suggestions, and update when I've found out more or if I have more questions.

Secondly, I do plan on keeping/using the GS till my next starter kit comes in since I do want to get off the analogs ASAP. I'm very excited to start vaping and can't wait. :D

Welcome! I will add my voice to the suggestion of an eGo, or possibly a Riva starter kit. Great battery life, and since it has a 510 connection there are a ton of options for accessories. It's true that generally speaking, the Greensmoke has not been a well-received device, and it's definitely way overpriced. (For the price of their deluxe kit you could outfit yourself with an eGo or Riva kit and enough carts/attys/cartomizers and juice to keep you nic'ed up for the next two or three months.)

If you want something more cigarette-like though, popular choices include the Joye 510, and any of the KR808D-1 type kits (Volt, Bloog MaxFusion, Smoov, etc.) Shorter battery life but still a good E-cig experience.

Congratulations and welcome to Information Overload!! lol Love Zoi's post!! Good Luck with your new adventure!! You asked for it and being a female I feel like I have to get my words in too!! I see here everyone likes an EGO...lol Well, I don't have an Ego...lol but do I hear an Echo...echooooo? OH WAIT!!!! IGO...IGO...IGO to D and B Gold - Home for my Echo and IGO. Great prices for the kits at $40-$45. Right now, this minute until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow I see he is offering an extra box of cartomizers with the purchase of each kit(that's 8 cartomizers)! That's right! But wait folks...that's not all he's adding in a cone and a drip tip. Ok...back to the subject. So, I obviously love the Echo and the IGO. I prefer the manuals because I seem to get a better vape. Being female and all I also like the 650 mah, it's smaller, love the black one the best! But I have both the 1300 mah and 650 mah. Now, here's the good thing about the IGO!! #1. The battery is like the Everready, it's still running when I go to bed! #2. The large cartomizers hold about 2.5 - 3 mil of juice (about 100 drops) Put that on your battery and you're good to go all day!!! #3. If you have the KR808 carts, you can pop them on the IGO and vape away. Great for testing sample juices before you fill the large cartomizers that come with the Igo kits. Right now I have a KR808 on my 1300 mah IGO...great vaping!!! This is a great place to get the e-liquid Welcome to Tasty Vapor You can buy sample bottles! Well good luck!!

Definitely look into the Rive 510 at Liberty Flights: Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510 . I started out with a Joye 510 (180 mAh Battery) and have been super disappointed in the battery life, the Lite kit from LF is $30 with the 20% off link in the upper left corner of their page. I should be getting mine on Monday, but everything I've read on it indicates that it's a great unit.

You'll need to get juice with it, I've been loving the samplers I've gotten from freedomsmokeusa.com, but there's so many other vendors out there that you'll probably go mad trying to find the perfect juice :D. That's part of the fun with this hobby though.

Hope this helps!

So, I think I've come to a decision. I'm looking at getting the eGo Starter kit from altsmoke.com which comes with 2 batteries, 2 attys, 5 pre-filled carts and the other basics. I added the PCC so I could charge at work if/when necessary. Is there anything else I should add to the order as far as backups? How long can I expect an atty to last? I'm guessing I should get some blank carts to try out different e-juices with? As I have the order configured now, I'm still sitting at almost 30 bucks less than my GS starter kit. :)

If you want basically the same thing as Greensmoke but more compatible, see the KR808D-1 models like SmokelessImage Volt and Vapor4Life and I recommend manual batteries - they make it easier to get a good hit and are much better sealed on the threaded end so they are harder to damage or kill with juice leaks. You should be able to get 4-7 days use out of each carto by keeping it damp with suitable eliquid. I recommend the 78mm standard size batteries for 280mah or 3-4+ hours of charge for a light or moderate vaper. These use cartomizers from SmokelessImage, Bloogplanet, Halocigs (G6) and Vapor4Life

If you want something more powerful then go to Liberty-Flights.com, press the 20% off upper left front page to lower the shown prices, then look at the Ego and Riva 510 models. Riva 510 is a popular Ego clone and somewhat higher voltage - the Riva 510 Lite Bundle is under $30 with that 20% off for 2 complete 750mah Rivas. Blank Boge brand cartomizers are most popular on Ego and Riva (I use juices with 20% or less VG - ie. thin juices, preferably light colored juices that leak little or no carto-clogging flavoring sediment). You could also put a 510 to 808 adapter on it if you wanted to use KR808D-1 prefilled cartomizers. Besides long battery charge, these fat-battery models can optionally use the hotter LR (low resistance) parts which can give a bigger hit enhance the TH or nicotine.

The longevity of the attys depends on how well you care for them and what juices you use. Standard non-tank attys should go at least a week or so before they need cleaning, however if you use a thicker juice with a high VG content you may need to clean them more often. The LR atty will probably not last as long as the standard because it burns hotter. Overall longevity, I would count on a good 4-6 months or more with proper care and maintenance.

Also, make sure the PCC you got is for the eGo, not the 510. eGo batts will not fit in the 510 PCC. There is an eGo PCC that I know of that looks kind of like a leatherette day planner cover.

Also, you might consider some eGo Mega dual coil cartomizers. The 510 atty and cart combo I found never really worked to my satisfaction. The standard eGo Mega atty and cart worked a lot better, but for me, the ultimate has been the EMDCC.

Congrats on your purchase! I think you're going to really like the eGo.
